I'm laughing at how Ruyi was being so sassy, always backtalking to the Emperor and even being cheeky by moving his wheeled ladder as revenge before she leaves lol. She seemed to be so full of joy, innocence and spirit when she was still a young concubine. After she becane Empress, the Emperor was always making her anxious, tired and feeling down for doing her job correctly.
The drama portrays what happens when you enter an unhealthy and abusive relationship pretty well. That slow death of all joy and enthusiasm for life. It goes to show how subtle the change is yet how drastic it can be, because I finished the series a while ago and am surprised to see her so willful when I rewatch earlier scenes. The drama is quite long but it’s haunting to think about how that process unfolds throughout the years for Ruyi.
Deep down he probably knew she was out of his league- smarter and more wise than him-- but he's the Emporer so he naturally should have the best. His own insecurities about himself led him to mistreat her so many times.

Aww if only they could have stayed this way. Being a concubine is no easy thing...but neither is having to be the emperor. Ruyi was his first choice and if not for the rules and traditions...I think deep down she might have been his only choice. However, alliances and kingdoms were forged through marriages so it wasn't really his choice either. Looking at the two of them together, even their closest assistants saw that they loved each other truly...and their joy made those who truly knew them happy. The moment his dad selected another woman to be his main wife and empress their love was going to suffer.
