Great comparison video. I personally prefer the tone of the Mk1, It seems to have a more full bodied 'classic' synth tone. The low frequencies definitely seem more apparent in the Mk1. I love the coloured switch caps on the Dark Time, I could really use some of these for mine, it is sometimes difficult to decipher between the two flick switches for each step.
yes, the coloured caps are a great improvement for quick actions on front panel! :-) both Dark Energies have well defined personalities; maybe the MkI is more on steroids and the MkII is more "modern", but- you know - both can find a precise place in the mix
In the two years since you asked this question, you may have found these switch tips, but I recently bought some from a model railway accessories supplier.
the first part of your reply makes sense, now that it's eight years later & I've heard a few more examples of the same instrument. but what do you mean by confirmation bias?
I know what it means, thanks. I meant "what do you mean by that in this context?" I genuinely prefer the sound of the original. if I didn't, I'd get me some mk2 action.
Caro Enrico Cosimi. Vabbe forse sbaglio io.
Oh, man, I'm really sorry I sold my mk1. The mk2 can't compete with it, really. The filter just sounds too different, to spikey. What I really miss about Dark Energy is its PWM. The best PWM I ever came across. Minibrute is currently my only monosynth and while it's really great the PWM can't come close to that of Dark Energy.
+ALPHAVOYAGER I feel your pain man. I sold mine years ago to get a Maschine. It took me years to realise what a mistake that was. I'm in the process of obtaining another one, albeit at an inflated price, but I don't care. I want that filter and that magical PWM.
This is daft. It's a numeric, settings on the knobs comparison. Pointless as every analogue synth has components with slightly different tolerances and values. The MK2 also has a heater, the MK1 does not, so it will drift after turning on.
Trying to compare the two but end up getting lost in the jam
Wow it sounds awesome when they play both at the same time
I like Mk2. Seems more versatile for what I'd like to do with a single osc synth.

Nice video, I only got the MKII, so now I can hear the difference between the MKI & MKII :-)
Love the LFM knob on my mk.I. Extremely unpredictable, but can produce some beatiful and organic FM-sounds when tuned precisely!

I like the mk 1 sound better. Although I love my gritty tekno, The smoothness of the mk1 does it for me
thank you for the video, helped me a lot deciding =)
Thanks for the comparison - really appricated
urgh, got so jealous when you started playing both... I CAN'T AFFORD TWO!!!
Thanx for sharing!
Are the DE 1 & 2 both simultaneously sequenced by the Dark Time?
If so, how did you connect them both?
If it's like that you can make it work perfectly for 1 bassline, it has both the sub and the mid part. Imagine what happens when you envelope both! :)
I still have the MK1 with Glide mod and I'll never sell it !
Ottima comparazione! Personalmente preferisco di gran lunga il Mk1...
Mk1 all the way
Doepfer must be very disappointed they can't get the 24dB circuit anymore, the new 12dB version is so weak compared.
Great Video. Can you tell me where you can get the colored toggle switch caps?
The only ones I see for sale on line are for guitars

I'm glad I got two of the mk1. thanks for this.... the mk2 is not to my tastes at all!
Compare another two and they will sound as different again. Your statement is confirmation bias.
the first part of your reply makes sense, now that it's eight years later & I've heard a few more examples of the same instrument. but what do you mean by confirmation bias?
Confirmation bias means you're biased toward what you've bought / emotionally invested, you tend to confirm your initial choice regardless of results
I know what it means, thanks. I meant "what do you mean by that in this context?"

I like both

Oh crap should have bought a DE I before they went out of production. I thought the II might be 'slightly' different. Which isn't the case at all.
Good lord MK1 is like a Moog, probably afraid of a lawsuit so they made MK2.
1 sounds meatier and 2 sounds thinner.
Compare so others and it could just as easily be the other way around.
MK 1 sounds better to me :)
the video image is too poor, you need to fix it more
belli i cappuccetti sui selettori del dark time eh eh eh
there is not a real comparison at all!!!! it is only a demostration of two dark energy with your super sequencer

your opinion was unwarranted, why criticize when someone is offering a service, if you don't like then go elsewhere. I appreciate ACM's effort
Its sad that mk1 is not for sale anymore, mk2 is just shit compared to mk1 if you ask me.
