    I've been doing this for years, it really keeps the vocal controlled and tight in the mix. You're really sharing the sauce with this one Jerry!

    I've been afraid of Limiters since the very day I started mixing 6 years ago and found all these different ways to achieve the results I wanted without them but this video has helped me finally understand how I can use them transparently throughout the mix. Having this new tool in my arsenal is gonna make everything just that much better from now on. Thank you so much Jerry!

    To add, sometimes it might be useful to limit first if your source has alot of spikes, makes it easier for your compressors to do their job properly later on.

      I think your suposed to compress first an then limit unless your going for that sort of limiter pumping sound

      It's better to use clip edit for a track with a lot of spikes.

      @@Bwarevibes dont worry about the spikes just make sure everything thats not a transient isnt peaking

    I do this on my recording vocal chain that’s cool to see someone else do this too 😂😂

    That’s a good advice, although vocals don’t usually trigger a ton the mixbus compressor or the final mastering limiter; I use a limiter on vocals (as well as bass, synths, pianos…) to turn down the spikes that would cover everything for a microsecond screwing my balance. Even some ms of tall peaks in the those instruments immediately annoy me

      @mixwithjerry  3 дні тому +1

      @@alessandrosummer Yeah I hear you. I think really the benefit comes from when the vocals sum together with the drums and bass in particular. You start getting some new higher peaks when they hit together at the same time like on a kick or snare hit. I do this out of precaution on pretty much all of my instruments too. Not sure that it makes a huge difference on most of the elements in the grand scheme of loudness, but it’s just become a part of my workflow.

    • @alessandrosummer
      @alessandrosummer 3 дні тому

      @ yeah it doesn’t make a huge difference for the loudness but it keeps the tracks steadier and avoids them to poke out

    Yessir. I use a limiter on my Rap vocals

    Makes sense. Sounds like the vocal lost some of its beef when you pushed the threshold and the ceiling further down.

    • @mixwithjerry
      @mixwithjerry  3 дні тому +1

      @@uswemusic8267 Yeah you definitely can overdo it. For this song I only had at most 2 dB gain reduction. It’s really all about where the vocal is in regard to the entire mix before adding the limiter.

    • @uswemusic8267
      @uswemusic8267 3 дні тому

      @@mixwithjerry That makes perfect sense. I applied the technique to a mix last night and saw impressive results. By using the limiter to clip vocal transients at -3dB and kick drum transients at -2dB, I gained significant headroom. This allowed me to reduce the dynamic range between the music and vocals, achieving a better balance. Taking it further, I used the Waves IM Pusher to boost the track's loudness and clarity, maintaining a well-balanced mix between vocals and music. Your tutorial was spot on, bro! If my interpretation or explanation is off, please let me know so I can refine my understanding.

    • @mixwithjerry
      @mixwithjerry  3 дні тому

      @@gurmeetbajaj7763 Yeah you definitely can, but just be light with it. I also go through all of my instruments and look for any spots that have much higher peaks than the rest of the performance. I’ll load the limiter and the individual tracks and make sure they’re engaging only on the higher peaks. Makes the bus limiter work less.

    Who is saying your not supposed to use a limiter? The same ppl who say your not supposed to use a lot of compression?
    I feel like you guys just make up these myths just to justify your videos

    • @mixwithjerry
      @mixwithjerry  3 дні тому +3

      I don’t think I ever said that specifically, but using a limiter is usually associated with the mastering stage and not mixing. Especially for beginners. When I first started, I never even thought of using a limiter on a vocal. It’s not a technique that a lot of people are familiar with. And btw, I get tons of comments saying even 10 dB of compression is too much so those people definitely exist. It’s UA-cam and everybody has their opinion. I work really hard on these videos and put them out free to whoever wants to watch them. I don’t believe I’m creating myths to justify my videos like you’re saying.
