Better than Gibson? Maybach Lester - Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 кві 2019
- I know that the title is clickbaity.... but the truth is that IN IT'S PRICE RANGE, this is definitely something Gibson cannot compete with. If you fork over another 1500 bucks, the sure, Gibson offers equal or even better instruments... but at the 2K mark, Maybach is tough to beat!

Watched this quite a lot of times and first I have to say a BIG THANK YOU, Henning. Not only for this review, but especially for this one, cause I got mine now and it's because of your review. Since a couple of months looking for a good LP Style in custom shop quality, but not for such a high price, the originals with the "G" are. Heard about Maybach Lesters before and it was glad to see, that you did this review. So, as I written, watched this over and over again to become convinced to give it a try by myself. Luckily, there is a Mayback dealer right around the corner where I live, so I jumped in my car this morning and testing it by myself. It's exact this one, a Maybach Midnight Sunset '59 and what can I say? It's a beauty of an instrument and an assrockin' beast. Hell Ya! So again ... Thank you for this review, Henning! Rock On!
Thanks man!
Anyone who watches this channel knows how Henning feels about Gibson, he is quite reserved here lol. Love the Maybach, thanks for sharing Henning!
Finally the review I was waiting for even before you created your channel!
I bought a Lester '58 and was blown away by the guitar this is after owning a few Gibson custom shop guitars which rested next to the Maybach and I would always pick up the Lester. Light weight excellent Amber pick-ups just an all around great guitar !!!
Damon 2A I‘ll quote you when some fan boys act up again, may I?
Your guitars rest next to each other? Do you even play?
So proud that the maybachs are actually handmade in Bosnia among other places. We have a great luthier and hand guitar manufacturer Mirza Kovacevic who makes their models.
Bosnia? They‘re made in the Czech Republic, France and Germany. Not once has anyone mentioned Bosnia.
Hello Henning! Not clickbait at all, sound & quality prevails. The look of contentment on your face says it all! And who else watched the entire Joe B ad? Fantastic! 🤟
Ha! Bought a Maybach Lester 60s Earl Grey last week and i loooove it! Propably the best sounding guitar in my collection! :D
I am jealous! Well done. Maybe link us your review and or pics :?
Great review. Since you have played both the Maybach Lester and the Eastman SB59/v, could you please tell us about how they stack up against each other? Do you have a favorite? Do you think you could make a comparison video? That would be fantastic.
Hot the nail on the head a custom shop for £1800 can't beat that, these models interest me greatly..
The case this guitar comes with - is a piece of art itself
This guitar appears to have avoided the horrible 'distressed' look that is common place.. and instead, looks aged. A well cared for guitar that is 50+ years old. I don't know how they've done it.. but it looks like pure class.
Incidentally, the shot of your studio at 19:01 is absolutely gob-smacking!
What i learned about Maybach guitars: consistent quality! Go and try em out like i did, they're fantastic instruments!
If only Gibson could learn that too
hey Eytsch, thanks for this vid. I checked out a bunch of gibson cs lp's this week, didn't love any of them, then decided to check out a maybach lester 60 slim taper today, and now it's sitting on my rack - one of the most resonant instruments I've ever held. Probably wouldn't have even considered it without your video.
This is the most fun I've seen you have on a guitar so far; this video was a blast to watch! Definitely will look into one of these.
Bought my first Maybach Lester because of your review! Your are correct there fantastic guitars!!!
Really like the Maybaches. I only wish they had an 'un-aged' option, as I don't like buying reliced guitars.
They do, but they‘re Polyurethane finish in new look. So if you order new look, you might be advised to write them an email beforehand, that you want new look nitro. They do that but you habe to ask specifically.
Love that drive in pedal. Really like the intro song too Henning. Great lead tones.
I seriously LOVE my Maybach Lester 59 HoneyPie. And now..i can start the Video!
Thanks for a really great review Henning. Only recently found out about Mayback Lester n after this review it is definitely my next Guitar
Did you buy one? How was it?
10:18 Larson-style headstock is the one Gibson "borrowed" the most when designing the Les Paul.
Very nice vídeo! Super informative and fun to watch.
I have a Maybach Lester Custom 72’ and I love it, they’re unbeatable at their price range in my experience.
Hi, very intersting guitar, similar level with gibson trad, classic or supreme?
@@kirillsamarcev1988 Hey Kirill, in terms if quality and sound, the Maybachs are up there with the reissues.
Great overview, thanks for taking the time to profile the cleaner aspects - loved the neck with pick and finger-style (I use both approaches). I mainly play my 1968 LP Custom but always up for something a bit different and Maybach have definitely caught my attention . . . will try to get my hands on one of their Lesters, for sure. Cheers.
hey hen!
for future reviews with multiple amps.. can you put the current amp (and pedals) in a separate window/s in the lower right/left? I think that would bring the viewing experience to a new level.
I own a '16 Gibson LP traditional and a Maybach Lester 59. The Maybach plays better, sounds vintage with the Amber PAF like pups.
The Gibson plays a bit les good, still very good. And sounds more raw with the 57 pups.
I
In the end i prefer the Maybach.
Don't know how it holds up against a custom shop Gibson.
Thank you for your comment Jeroen, but we do Custom Shop Lesters too ;-)
Never tried a Maybach but that may be about to change. Great demo. Been through a few Gibson's and always sold /traded them. Heritage do a fine lp type and are on the list too . Having said that, they're bloody expensive too . Maybach deffo gets the vote !
I could hear the inner kid doing rock poses in the mirror with his first guitar come out of you when you started playing Zeppelin. Those riffs will never not get me fired up.
Please do an online power chord lesson. You totally nailed le Metall riffage \ m/
I didn’t want this one to end. I’ll watch more ads. Play it more.
Nice axe! I just got an esp Ltd ec-1000 rather than a LP. The build quality appears better and sounds like a dream. And at $499 with a koa top and roadrunner hard case it couldn’t be beat. The esp Ltd ec-401 and ec-1000 are the stuff! The 401’s are about $699 new and $399 used! Or on a tight budget they have an ec-256 which has a thinner body and esp Ltd pickups where as with the former you can have DiMarzio or Duncan’s. The first two have same specs as a LP. Thumbs up and animals at the end!
Ben Logan Dude, these are completely different guitars...the EC-1000 sounds way more like an SG than a Les Paul. Totally different stuff.
OMG !!! This guitar is one of the best LESPAUL type I ever heard !!!
Really nice Song in the beginning Henning. You're a great composer!
I think you only do amazing reviews Henning.
This one was terrific!!! 🔥
Also, it was nice seeing some other views of the Studio / Demo room. I didn’t realize you had so much room. And that translates too more guitars and amps, I’m guessing? Right?
Thanks again Henning for making my guitar choices ever easier…
Best always! ✌🏼
Great review and I must say the Maybach Lester sounds really, really great. I think it is a fantastic guitar, but I don't like buying an aged guitar and paying for it to age. Aging happens by itself if you play the guitar. And in fact I know this is a new guitar, why should it look old to me? I really don't understand this hype.
Maybach, please sell unaged guitars for 200 bugs less!
I just came back from a 2-3 year coma so I only have one question: does it djent?
Fun review man! I want one of these! And, yes: Killer studio!!
Great guitar and great review! Thanks for the video, very professional as well.
I bought two Maybach Lester '59 last year, just so as to pick the one I would get along with the most, after a few weeks. You can guess what happened :)
?
I guess he put a Fender logo on the headstocks and sold both (!) as Paganini's one and only true historical violin to the same collector!
Thanks for the review, bought a maybach lester 60 slim tapper neck earl grey. Love it🤘
One of the best reviews I see!
I’m just uncertain. I’ve been aGibson guy for quite a while. Hadn’t got the nerve to pull the trigger on a Maybach yet. Worried I’ll get one and not like the feel or playability.
For a les Paul R9 this guitar is a steal at its starting price point but here in the US you’d better be willing to make it a lifetime guitar because it’s resale value will not be high nor will it really increase in value as it’s considered an “off brand” guitar no matter how well they make them. If it costs you $2000 for one then in the US market expect it to go for about $1000 or less to resell it. For me it wouldn’t be worth it despite how great it sounds and how well it’s made. It would be looked upon as a pawn shop guitar which isn’t really fair but that’s the nature of the beast here. In Europe it’s a different story I’m sure. It really looks and sounds great though! I really wish a store would carry them here so I could at least play one
I think you are totally wrong. Check on internet the prices for a used Maybach, if you can find one. The prices are stabile like steel
@@tonigoetz1972
I just discovered this brand, and if the prices are stable in the US it’s because the only people buying used ones are people who are familiar with the brand.
If someone needed to sell one quickly they would likely take very big lose (although also happens regularly with the iconic brands, too).
I would like to get the chance to play one though. I’m sure they are worth the price.
Ahh when down picking that fast I know that pain feeling as someone trying to get decent at playing metal like that 😂
für mich sind Maybach die Besten...in der Preiskategorie 2.000 - 2.500 Euro. Und ich unterstütze gerne unsere Nachbarländer......:) danke Henning für das tolle Video
MAN! What was that piece you were playing from 1:44?!?! It's absolutely beautiful! Is it available anywhere?
Will you pleeeeease make a Maybach vs Eastman guitars comparison ? :)
which is the real comparison actually Maybach vs epiphone les paul as well
SUGAR LIFE epiphone not in the same league.
@@donkeevney i dont know...depends on the epi
SUGAR LIFE : they are not in the same pricerange, not even remotely. Someone shopping for a Maybach is not buying an Epi.
If you are interested in a Maybach, you look at Gibson, Eastman, Heritage, and custom builders....not an Epiphone.
If you just want a good guitar, Epiphone is great. If you want something truly special, you shop somewhere else. I owned several Epi's, sold them all. They never did anything for me personally.
Yes, a comparison Lester 59 vs Eastman SB59 vs Tokai LS160
They have a massive weight relief, and comparing it straight with a Tradicional or one of the new standards, the Maybah sounded for me with less definition in the bass, with more treble and also more output. Question of taste. A reissue offers you mainly one piece mahogany body (less than 3.8kg) and long tennon. Of course, really over priced, but the league of Maybachs for me is with the Standards of the big G.
Great video man!!
Nice comment.
You may be right but Maybach just smashes the Gibson USA non custom shop guitars. So yeah, maybe they differ in specs but a USA Standard Les Paul is no match. It‘s not even close.
Incredible playing. Henning for Culture Minister. He knows how to do it. Keep on rocking..
Good play man
Then better than Gibson CS or not or equivalent?
hennig, i watch you more for your sense of humor more than anything else, you are a funny sob!
What a lovely music played in the begining
Hi ther e : i would like to know if that AMBER SPIRIT OF '59 are compared to 50's standart pickup Burstbucker or more Burstbucker 61R (60's) ?
Eastman vs maybach? Where would you put your money?
both great, it's a matter of taste, not quality difference
If I'm correct you can get all Maybach guitars without aging :)
THAT is something I'd definitely prefer! I don't necessarily have anything against "aged" guitars, but when it's artificially aged, it just seems like stolen valor to me. I have a 2004 PRS McCarty that is "aged", but done so the all natural way by a gigging musician. Even having said that, if Maybach only came "aged", I'd still love to have one at some point when my wallet is less starved.
You can, but those won't be finished in nitro cellulose. They are poly urethane finished.
You can get whatever you want. You just have to order it. The only thing worth mentioning is that, you have to say that you want nitro on a new look maybach because otherwise they‘ll put polyurethane on the new look models by default. Just talk to your dealer ;-)
Wie immer sehr geil..... aber was sind das für Testbild-Pullover????
Your videos are always great. Thanks. Of course your setup is mind boggling. I’m just wondering why there isn’t an actual Fender combo so you could really get into a deep reverb thing, ala Peter Green, as part of your demos. I suppose you’re appealing more to the hard rock/metal community? Just curious!
I have the Tone King Sky King... that covers those sounds extremely well
Ah so it's a relic. They put a lot of care into damaging the instrument and then charge you extra for it. And from their web site it looks like they only do them as 'Aged' - No thank you. Does it fail to stay in tune like a Gibson because the strings stick in the nut ? Is it delivered with the stop bar screwed down as far as it will go, putting excess pressure on the bridge and causing it to bend over time? What ratio are the tuners? The 14:1 tuners on a Gibson are a little tricky to tune accurately. Does it have 500K log pots? - the Maybach specs don't say. Does the neck finish feel sticky? And what exactly is it about the far more expensive Gibson that makes it better than the Maybach?
You can buy them in new look too. It does stay in tune. It sounds and plays great. Was set up really good. I have a 2016 Gibson LP Traditional and a Maybach Lester 59.
Maybach beats the Gibson easily.
Great guitars need sweet cases every guitar needs a good case 👍🏽
Nice intro Henning! Guitar sounds great. On the intro it looks like your thumb nail is white but then later in the video it doesn't. Is that lighting causing that?
Screw the guitar, where do you get your shirts!!!! Brilliant stuff!
Theres a site for them in the info
He sells 'em! The one with Pizza and Cats is as good as it gets 😂
Well the case looks better than the scratched up guitar.I would rather have a nice scratch free finish.?Dont get it?
I know that familar sound, impressive, some pretty cool gear i see too, nice
Please do a sound compare of overdrive/distorted tone between this and Squire Strat.
Great guitar playing my man ....!!!!!
Would you say these are better than Berumen SC ? Thanks for the video!
Different
The more i look at Gibson prices the more i look at guitars like this and the tokai. Allegedly the maybach offers custom shop level instruments for just below standard pricing. While the tokai allegedly offers a superior instrument from the standard line for significantly less. Its hard to be gibson td. Imo they should produce their guitars in japan and leave the custom shop in the states. Their pricing is the rzn they are struggling to make money but its bc they are made in america where it is becoming less feasible to offer these models for a reasonable price every year. Thats also why theres so many lawsuits recently too. They cant make enough w their current practices so they target companies making lp’s to remove competition… they could literally get tokai to slap a gibson logo on their guitars and significantly reduced the cost of manufacturing like fender did. Then drop the standard american line bc its junk anyways. Either way the Gibson everyone thinks of when its americsn made is custom shop level stuff. The og guitars from back in the dsy came out of a small factory that produced their guitars like the custom shop anyways. It would be better this way
sir, I really hold your demo videos and playing (super tasty!)..and your scintillating witt, in high regard. I own a wonderful Eastman sb59/v in gold burst, with lollar pups. it's the best single cut I've ever played (including many Gs).. but I've always loved the look of the Maybach aged (nitro) finish. I am wondering about selling my SB59/v and getting a Maybach aged Lester. You have evaluated both. In your mind and ear and preferences, if you could have only one..which would you choose please?
I liked the feel of the Maybach more. I now have sold both, but the Maybach was used a bit more while I had them.
@@EytschPi42 thanks so much! What single cut did you get (curious)? Was the Maybach neck old-style Les paul-fat? I just saw your review on Panucci gold top wow! I emailed him. Those are much more $$?
Man I hate the ads of that guy saying no matter how much you improve your guitar playing skills you'll never be Jimmy or Clapton. Ug! Right in the middle of you playing I have to listen to that mug for 5 seconds.
Nice playing, reminds me (long gone) Matthias Arp...
If the devil is in the details at maybach they must have some pretty good deamons ( ;) ) working, I need to try one :) Btw lovely how the bass comes in to the mix :)
Nice guitars, but i could never ever spend that much money on a cracked, aged finish. Well, I'm not so picky on centered dots. Why isn't the aged style just an option?
You can get them without aging
jomei36 you know I heard from a reputable source. Ok it was Anderton’s. People ask for non relic’d guitars and the guitars just sit there. The relics however, are selling.
@@Utubewrk123 this is the truth. We make less than 5% non aged guitars, since almost everybody want an aged guitar
I‘ll order mine without aging but with nitro lacquer! That way it will age over time but will tell my story and not an artificial one.
It‘s important to add Nitro-Lacquer finish to the order when ordering a new look Maybach. Otherwise they‘ll put Polyurthane on it which drove me away from other manufacturers. Nitro all the way but the aging happens with me, not at the factory!
Those Maybach sound fantastic!!!! And what a price… the Friedman was the best sound for me. Really good review than you
Since 3 months i''ve bought myself a Maybach Albatrotz 65 (you should try it too Eytsch) after some height adjustments it's by far the best /most dynamic guitar i own ( and i have several nice ones) pickups are fenominal !
Still own it? The yellow ones are really gorgeous

How does the neck thickness feel?
Short neck tenon isn't a 59 spec. Nice tone though and it can rival the gibson standard line.
plexi les paul To be completely honest...the Maybach Lester trashes the Standard line. It‘s direct competition to the Reissue models. And even the Reissues have a hard time to keep up. I once was a die hard Gibson Fan-Boy...right until Maybach came along.
Hey Henning, considering that the new Gibson standard 50s/60s is around 2000 euros is the Maybach still unbeatable for the price?
Maybach kills any Tribute/Studio/Standard and Classic. It‘s getting closer with the VOS-Models. A Lester 60 is nothing less than a direct rival to the R0, a Lester 59 a direct rival to the R9 and so on.
@@flowryan5829 where can I find this guitar in the US? Im in Florida. I dying to put my hands on one

Search on Reverb and you might be able to find somewhere in the US that sells them. I just discovered Maybach this week, and their website is in German so I don’t know any other way to find a dealer. Right now it looks like most of them on Reverb are outside the US. Personally, I’m interested in their model called Little Wing.
2 years ago i bought a Gibson lp traditional more or less at the same price: plastic inlays, some flaws in the finishes, awfull setup (i did a trussroad adjustmen) and the control cavity roughly routed. It's definitly not a Chibson due to the fact o bought from an authorized dealer and It makes me disappointed. Maybach It's definitly a better built instrument made in europe.
Fabio Patriarca unfortunately, you bought it during a bad time.
@@Utubewrk123 It is a 2014 with the 120th inlay, you're right maybe It's a bad production year but It's shame anyway for a brand like this.

Beautiful guitar.
of course the other way to get a guitar that looks like its been used for a few years is to use it for a few years.
But posers can't wait for a guitar to age naturally.
@@melvynobrien6193 are there no patient posers? I was going to say that would be an excellent name for a band but no, no it wouldn't.
spankenheim again if it has poly coating it doesn’t age. It has to have nitro coating if u want it to age naturally. You think a guitar thats 30 should’ve aged by now? Looks brand new to me. So buy a new one and let people like what they like. Don’t buy a relic if u don’t like them. It’s that simple.
@@Utubewrk123 right then make it with a finish that ages attractively instead of artificially pre-ageing it. I want to look at a ding on my instrument and remember the rack I whacked it on when i was in that club in 2017.
spankenheim well I think they are doing that now. So yea I understand but for years they weren’t allowed or stopped using nitro. So they’re back to doing that so u can age it yourself. Depending on what company etc. can’t go against anyone who has a cat 🐈 sorry I replied to u when it was meant to go to someone else I deleted it. When I said same goes for u I meant that towards someone else.
Great intro.
Bruh I own a Gibson LP but in terms of details that Maybach is on a custom shop level, but playability? No idea.
amazing

Wow so amazing Guitar sound very enjoy to litten my friend like👍♥️
My band agrees with me, that the maybach lester wild saffron sounds better than my 2005 Gibson Les Paul.
Extraordinary guitars. But on one point I disagree: the guitar case is really not ok.

What kind of damage did you ecperience?
