Great interview! Grimson is one articulate and intelligent dude!
Wasn’t in Detroit for very long, but quickly became a fan favorite. Stu definitely never had that “goon” persona, but you could tell he had to do what he had to do. Funny how stories came out about him and how he was a pretty clean cut guy, and he was always known as a great teammate and great presence in the locker room. Way to go Stu!

I remember back in the 90's growing up playing hockey in SoCal. We were playing a tournament at the rink the Ducks used as a practice facility. I watched the Ducks practice after one of our games and remember being star struck by guys like Terry Yake and Ron Tugnut doing pre practice warm up stretches right next to me. Just seeing guys who you routinely see on your trading cards all the time that seem larger than life. At the end of the practice one of the coaching staff gave me a stick. As I was walking out to the parking lot very excited with said stick in hand I saw Stu Grimson, who also played for the Ducks at the time, standing there signing autographs. The guy is a big scary looking dude. I got the guts to approach him and just remember him actually engaging, not just snatch the pen and sign type of guy and never even make eye contact. He actually asked how I was doing and made eye contact. Just really nice soft spoken guy. Also as he was signing the sick I noticed all of his knuckles were split, stitched up and looked as if he punched a brick wall on a daily basis. I will never forget looking at those knuckles thinking wow this guy is the real deal. I still have that stick.

@ G P That's awesome!!! I watch the NHL network religiously, hockey being the only sport I follow. Stu is one of quite a few former NHL players who is an analyst on the network. I know about how articulate and well spoken he is. He also seems like a super friendly guy in real life, but your story is very cool!!
We had season tix for the Ducks back then and watching Grimson and Ewing do their thing was a sight to behold.

Looking at Stu and listening to him, you would not think of him as an NHL fighter. These guys are class.

Wasn't particularly a big fan of Stu's, but hearing him talk, I would love to sit down and share a couple of beers with him. He seems like a really cool person.

Funny, but at the time of that meeting between O-dog and Grimson, O-dog already had more career points than Grimson. The dude had 16 points total in his 9th season in the league. O-dog had 19 as a rookie. So Grimson should have known his name. He was the 5th overall draft pick the year before

As a Hawks fan, I missed him in Chicago. We got Probert later, but as Stu kinda mentioned, all those early years of drugs ansd boozin and partying had caught up to Probert and he wasn't the same. Grimson aged way better
Probert isn't here dumb ass so how do you know aged better. Wtf man your comment makes no sense. I know guys who did drugs their whole lives look better than some who didn't do anything. Has nothing to do with that. Unless you do heroin and then you will decline.

Probert's heart literally exploded from years of drug abuse and alcohol abuse. Not hard to understand, genius. And congrats on knowing guys who do drugs. Nobody cares how someone looks on the outside. Your internal organs aren't thanking you when you're boozing and snortin coke on top of playing hockey every day. Watch the show every day and love Hayes and the O'Dog, but to be honest, they really dropped the ball on this interview. I've seen it before, it's like they cower when there is somebody that they really respect on the show. Hayes doesn't even seem like he's listening to the story half the time he's looking at the booth like he's getting instructions constantly. And o-dog, didn't give more than a hum and a ha. 😶
