Totally agree with you on the need to educate customers about these sweatshop companies that wreck their tapes. So good to see you take care of your customer's memories. People need to understand that they need to go with the experts to retrieve 20 - 30 year old VHS footage. This technology was never designed to last this long. With care, your memories CAN be recovered.
Congratulations on the channel, it's great to see VHS memory being preserved. I am a collector from Brazil and as such, we also have to deal with the problem of mold on tapes. One of the biggest issues we face is the sticky mold, the one that tears the tapes when trying to remove it, and another one is stains on the tape. Do you have any tips on how to deal with these stains? Thanks in advance! Note: On my channel, I upload movies that I convert from my VHS tape collection.
Very good video. i like hearing about the legacy box story's. i heave heard about them before and just cringe just thinking about ever recommending them to anyone, only if i really don't like the person 😁. Im curious about your output process. do you just make a M4v and out put it to a USB or do you use some type of Authoring software to USB?
Output these days, 480 MP4. Nobody wants to pay for all the extra time involved in capturing to anything above and beyond. It’s pointless handing Grandpa a 50GB file of his 6hr EP blue light special Kmart VHS tape he got in 1987 which he dubbed 4 x VHS-C tapes also recorded in EP mode. Polishing turds is 98% of this business. Main thing is clean and operable playback machines so corner to corner clear picture and audio is obtained start to finish. Yes the quality won’t be as sharp as upscaling, but the price point is affordable.
I happen to have a couple of vhs tapes with slight mould on them, one of them I only noticed the other night when I was about to watch it so I thought nah I don't think it would be sensible to insert it into my machine, it's now back on my shelf! It's a rather old one , might have to try the razor blade method to clean it! It was from a house clerance and could tell it must of been stored in a damp place, it's only very mild so I don't think splicing that section would harm it, unless it's turned to sticky tape no pun intended!
I have a vintage boxing channel. 40+ year old Betamax and VHS tapes. I wish I had a pound for every machine I have aligned without equipment and mouldy tape I have cleaned manually.. I wish I had your setup. Sometimes I have had to align heads just for one tape that had been recorded on some old crappy unit. It really is a tedious job sometimes.
Such a cool video!! I’ve got about 100 VHS tapes and half of them were stored in the garage😂 when I thought about how fragile the tape itself is I realized I’d have to clean these at some point, I didn’t realize how much work can go into it! Is one of those machines worth to purchase or am I better off sending my collection in and just avoid the headache of breaking my own tapes?
I just saw a painful article were someone praised legacy box even though they coulnd't fix the garbled part of the tape they probably did not watch the tracking.
Im sure it was i feel bad for them to and i love the review it says an honest review im like yea right I actually have a betacam sp tape of Simpsons interviews i need to digitize someday. @@gotmemories
I have watched a bunch of your videos, and this is the best video on cleaning moldy tape on youtube!!!! Are you worried about breathing in the mold dust? Thanks
All depends on what worn out means. Either way, it’s not something that can be taught in the comment section. I’d post a video and send the link on what’s going on so I can assess.
Good job on this. But you mentioned allergies. That is something that can develop overtime due to constant exposure to allergens. Please don't touch the mold with your bare hands. Get those thin disposable gloves that come in packs of 100 for under $2.
Yes! I’ve started to wear gloves AND a mask! I’ve recently had a chest infection and wondering if it’s been from regular virus stuff or these back to back moldy tape jobs.
@@gotmemories Good, I see you're a hard worker. Don't want nothing happening to you just because you are are going above and beyond helping people. I know a woman that can't be around mold for more than a couple of minutes. It messes her up bad.

Thanks for the kind words! I’m not sure what you mean by stains, drop me a video of the situation to info@gotmemories.com

Yes best to not put in a vcr! All the best

Yes! Welcome to my world! Nobody gets the amount of tedious work involved in these old tapes and are shocked they get junk back for $8 a tape 😂
You cleaning the top of the reel, but what's about the bottom? Shouldn't be there mold as well? Nice vids btw!
The bottom is cleaned on the cleaning machine. Typically not that much crud on the base. I’ll do an example of that on the next video.

It’s all a giant pain in the arse!

Ugh. 99.99999% chance the tape was perfectly fine.

Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed! Yes, mold is an issue, I do wear a mask.
Bonjour quel tissus utilisé vous pour nettoyer les k7 et film cinéma ? Merci pour vos vidéo il y a un chien qui travail à vous ?
I will highlight the material used in the next video!
Great video, is there a name for that particular fabric that youre using? Thanks!
Lint free disposable towels
Have you been able to use VHS C tapes with this machine?
Any vhs-c tapes with issues are transplanted onto full size vhs
What iso alcohol do you use? Was looking at some MG Chemicals - 824-1L 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol Electronics Cleaner
That works!
What would be your vcr of choice for an archival quality vhs capture?
Panasonic, 4head, usually the late 90’s before the all plastic shyte came in.
Have you ever gotten sick breathing in the mold dust?
Yes.
A question do you dampen the rollers or just keep them dry?
All depends on the severity
What material fabric is placed on the rollers?
Any lint free cleaning cloth is fine. I don’t have the brand on hand.
How do you restore worn out VHS tapes?
All depends on what worn out means. Either way, it’s not something that can be taught in the comment section. I’d post a video and send the link on what’s going on so I can assess.
