  • About 58 percent people in India are concerned about fake news on the internet, as per the Digital News Report 2024 published by Oxford University’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism earlier this month.
The report, based on a survey conducted by the Reuters Institute in collaboration with the Asian College of Journalism, said that a staggering 42 percent people in India are comfortable with news content produced using AI, with little human oversight, as opposed to the corresponding number being 10 percent in the UK and 23 percent in the US.
To analyse the report’s findings and their significance for the Indian news industry, Newslaundry and Reuters Institute organised a panel discussion with Nic Newman, senior research associate at Reuters Institute, Rupa Jha, CEO and co-founder of Collective Newsroom, Pooja Prasanna, editorial head at The News Minute, and Seema Chishti, editor at The Wire. The discussion was moderated by Mitali Mukherjee, director of journalist programmes at Reuters Institute.

We come from Radio /Doordarshan days of free to air News. Then we thought we were paying for the news via cable tv subscription bill. Now all of us believe we are paying for our internet subscription thinking we are paying for news over the internet. That's basic Indian people logic and you cannot change that 👍

I would really like to pay for news and did subscribe for a while. However, it is not feasible financially as I lost all work during the pandemic and never really recovered. Even relocating to another city looking for work has not helped. Digital news platforms seem to forget that many people are still struggling to make a living. I am not on any social media platforms and UA-cam and some apps are the only way I try and stay in touch with 'non-godi media'.

Same here. We don't feel our Indian banks are secured, let alone the most vulnerable system that is UPI, and public denial that nothing can be hacked. That's the dangerous water we are living under

I am new to you tube channels& would like to pay. But why can't their respective agents pick my subscription money from my residence by way of cash or cheque. At age 73+i feel insecure about other payment mode.

I think it is assumed in India that news by and large is free and fair - because most of us are brought up on a normal, boring fact ridden model of the old Doordarshan, and news as a 24x7 screeching head is still not as normalised as in The West. Hence, the larger question of it being fair and unpaid, and is not even a matter as yet.
