I may have commented on this, but just preparing you that DImash does NOT use his vocal super powers all the time....sometimes he stays in just his chest range and sometimes he uses the sparest minimalist of vocals....some reviewers get really disappointed and even REALLY complain!! when he sings "just" a pop song with no vocal fireworks or sings a composition with minimalist vocals....Dimash is kinda like a vocal Super Man....super man doesn't always fly around in his cape with a big S on his chest and neither does Dimash 🤣 Super man changes out of kind Clark Kent when the situation calls for it, and DImash turns into a Vocal Super Man when and if HE determines that the song calls for it

The song "Ikanaide" (Please, don't go) was composed in 1989 by Japanese singer-songwriter Koji Tamaki, with lyrics written by Goro Matsui. It tells the true story of Yoshiko Yamaguchi, who was born in China in 1920 to Japanese parents and became a celebrated singer and actress under the Chinese name Li Xianglan. When after WWII her Japanese origin became known, she was accused of espionage, tried, and deported to Japan, never to return to China again. The song speaks of the anguish, heartbreak, and final acceptance of this parting as the ones who love her have no choice but to let her go.
Thank you for your heartfelt reaction. My eyes teared up at the same point in the song. Such a beautiful song, masterfully performed. This is (so far) Dimash's only song performed in Japanese. The Tokyo Jazz Festival was still not doing in-person performances at that point in the pandemic. This is his original performance, so you chose correctly.
Agreed!! My fav too. He did do this live, but in Chinese. This version is much more beautiful due to the language and incredible microphone he’s using. You can hear the whistle in his throat.

The song was actually composed by Goro Matsui and petformed originally by Koji Tamaki. I believe what you referenced initially was something to do with a Japanese anime.
Dimash did the Tokyo Jazz Festival in 2020 and 2021. Both years under quarantine conditions. In 2020 he performed Samaltau and SOS from his home studio in Kazakhstan and in 2021 he performed Ikanaide from his studio in Beijing where he was going through a month of quarantine before taking part in the Shine Super Brothers tv show. Dimash coming out of quarantine made us smile as he was sporting a full beard and moustache 🤣 we were laying bets as to whether he would keep it for the tv show but of course it was gone by the time he started filming.

Just a slight correction. Goro Matsui wrote the lyrics. Koji Tamaki composed the music and you are correct that he was the original singer.

Ikanaide is the more seasoned version of Autumn Strong.. A relationship between Chinese man and a Japanese woman.. Love lost their battle only to become Dimashified and celebrated worldwide.. I loved DQ's Singer performance in 2017.. I died and came back with joy in my heart after his London 2018 performance.. Then because he can,, he started in Chinese, switched to Japanese, then back to Chinese at his concert in Prague.. That's just not normal, it's Dimash magic...
P.s. what is really unique and superb with respect to Dimash's vocal delivery is that every single note and phrase is by itself a gem; with many singers there are certain notes, or certain lines or the climax that is the "peak" or the "money note" or the "selling" point of the song, but with Dimash he so carefully crafts every single note, every word and line that any part of his songs taken alone are real gems....the line where he goes into connected vocal closure tone and then moves back into a very breathy tone is so so so hard to do and amazing!! among all the other gems here.... Dimash has said (maybe it's changed as this was a couple years ago) that this song is his most fav to sing of all his songs.....

I love that he loves to sing this song, and it's no surprise. I love the way you describe it, too. There's almost no good point to breathe while he's singing this because everything that comes out of him catches your breath even more. And it's not only the sound, it's everything he exudes in his being. One of the things that puts this among my favorite performances of any artist ever is the fact that he puts this much energy, emotion, and physicality into what is basically a studio recording. Even many of the top artists don't do this, not with their whole body and soul like Dimash does. It's pure magic.

It just pulls at your souls heartstrings, and you can't help but feel every word and feel his every emotion in this song. I saw your eyes start to get 😢 just as I did listening to this master class singer while bringing you on his journey of the song. I often wonder now how i went so long in life without him singing me to happiness every day. I can't go a day without listening. I only hope one day to experience this live. One of my favorite songs from Dimash. I was born in Japan and I love this song so much. Thank you for promoting Dimash. I found him 3 1/2 years ago through a reaction channel.

Read the story of this great singer. Dimash has a Chinese version and the title is Autumn Strong. Great performance in Chinese, but the Japanese version is my favorite. Ikanaide is a cover of a japanese song. The story is that of a japanese actress in china with a chinese boyfriend or husband, and she was obliged to go back to Japan during the 2nd world war. This very painfull separation was depicted in this japanese song, but there is also a chinese version called Autum Strong that Dimash sings in a concert that is beautifull too. I enjoy very much your reactions beeing a big fan of Dimash (a Dear as he calls us fans), and I agree with you, Dimash's music speaks to the soul. A big hug from Uruguay!!!

And, if you are ready for an uppercut to your soul, his absolute masterpiece, The Story of One Skye. The most powerful musical experience in my life (in his concert in Almaty). The music video is beyond words, nobody is prepared for such experience...
He recorded this in the studio because of COVID. He has like 36 live versions of this song in Chinese, not counting informal acapella - the same melody but different lyrics. Some of them are actually a mix of Chinese-Japanese. Many of these versions are on fancams. Personally I love the better fancams because they close up on his facial expressions and don't wonder around. You just have to look for Autumn Strong or Late Autumn and you will find a lot of performances at concerts and other occasions. He doesn't have a studio recording of the Chinese version that we know of. His first performance of this song was on the Singer contest in China in 2017. You can find that one easily, also with English subs if you search for them.
This performance was actually live streamed to the Tokyo Jazz Festival. All the artists live streamed their performances because of COVID. He did the same in 2020 when he live streamed Samaltau from his studio at home to the Tokyo Jazz Festival. You should listen to that too! It was incredible!

Dimash doesn't like talking about his range. When asked when his highest or lowest note is, he says it's different every time.
Goro Matsui wrote “Ikanaide” together with Koji Tamaki in 1989. Goro said this on his twitter about Dimash's cover: "I've heard many times "Don't go" sung by foreign singers in their native language, but I've never heard someone sing so beautifully in Japanese."
Dimash fans then contacted him for an interview. 😆 He gave a more detailed comment to them: "“I happened to find Dimash singing “ikanaide” by chance. The first thing that surprised me was his crystal clear tone and his expressive voice that conveys the lyrics of the song. I’ve heard other Asian singers sing “Ikanaide” in their native languages several times. However, even though they all sing great, none of them seemed to quite capture the sound/reverberation and meaning of the original lyrics/words, and perceive the emotions between the lines. In this song, the phrase ~ Ah, ikanaide~ is repeated several times in the chorus. Although they are the same exact words, each line has a different meaning. I feel that Dimash seems to know it.”"

This was another very enjoyable reaction. This is quickly becoming one if not the favorite Dimash performance for me and it invokes a very visceral response in me, just as "Ave Maria" did. I believe this actually was a live performance in that Dimash sang "Ikanaide" live for the Tokyo Jazz Festival Live stream in January of 2021 as it was being recorded. According to several native Japanese speakers, Dimash's pronunciation of the lyrics is nearly flawless. One native speaker, who gave a detailed analysis, stated that he is "expressing Japanese more (better) than Japanese" and that he does not only perfectly pronounce Japanese but "expresses Japanese…with Japanese emotion.". Goro Matsui, who wrote the lyrics to "Ikanaide," posted on his Twitter account that he has never heard a foreigner sing in Japanese in such a beautiful way.
Tamaki Kōji composed the music and performed the song in 1989. "Ikanaide" became the title song for the Chinese-Japanese TV series "Farewell, Li Xianglan," filmed that year. It is the story of Yoshiko Yamaguchi, a beloved Chinese-born Japanese actress and singer during World War II who hid her Japanese heritage under the name Li XIanglan. Following the war, when the Chinese became aware of her Japanese heritage, she was accused of being a spy and sentenced to death by firing squad for treason and collaboration with the Japanese; she had been involved in the production of Japanese propaganda films. Thanks to the intervention of influential friends, she was cleared of all charges but urged to leave China or risk being lynched.
She resettled in Japan, where she would continue to enjoy a successful acting career. In the 1950s, she moved her acting career to Hollywood and Broadway under the name Shirley Yamaguchi but returned to Japan in 1959, retiring from acting. She would go on to become a TV presenter and eventually a politician. She did not return to China for nearly 20 years.
In 1990, "Ikanaide" was translated into Cantonese and sung by Jacky Cheung using the same melody. Later, the song was rewritten and translated for Jacky Cheung to Mandarin under the title "Late Autumn." In 2004 the Taiwanese singer Terry Lin adapted the song into a new version titled "In Deep Autumn," with lyrics written by Daryl Yao.
Dimash chose the 2004 Taiwanese version arranged by Terry Lin with Mandarin lyrics for his performance at the 2017 "I Am A Singer" competition but gave it his own interpretation and titled it "Autumn Strong." This song went on to earn Dimash the "Best Foreign Singer" award during the Golden Melody Award in Hong Kong.

Yeah, most people, but particularly singers, tend to auto-breath with Dimash. Not a good idea! Gonna run outta breath looooong before he does! 🤣 And that's quite apart from simply being breathless with awe at the beauty of his sound and his phenomenal skill level.
Once again, we have Japanese Reactors coming out and commenting on his really great pronunciation, learning and delivering this song phonetically, whilst having virtually no conversational Japanese. Dimash, of course, has a strong background in learning to sing in many languages - via his extensive classical vocal / operatic training.
As a singer myself, having been in choirs where we learn songs in Latin, German, French etc. I know just how much 'drilling' and rehearsal of every part of every note, every intonation and inflection and pause is required, to get close to the original language, but we are in the hands of experienced choir masters, who know the pieces backwards. Dimash is his own choir master and conductor here, relying primarily on his phenomenal 'ear'.
Tis a thing of beauty. The greatest compliment is from the original composer and singer of this piece; Koji Tamaki, who conveyed he thought Dimash did his song more than justice.
Just to see his passion, even while in a recording studio, is something to behold.

There is no official stage performance of Ikanaide. He does sometimes a mishmash of Ikanaide/Autumn Strong during his concerts. It's very cute hearing him change from Chinese to Japanese and vice versa. Sometimes he asks which version we would like him to sing 🥰

Dimash appeared (online) at the abu Tv song festival as a special guest with the song "Ikanaide". This legendary composition was first performed in Japanese by Dimash at this Tokyo Jazz Festival on November 28, 2021.

When I listen to Dimash I never hear 'multiple' singers. His tone is so distinctive in each register that there is no mistaking it is all 100% Dimash. Thank you for your great reaction and appreciation of this immense talent we are blessed to listen to.

The Chinese love the song's melody, and have changed the lyrics a bit in Chinese, which is the version which Dimash first performed on The Singer 2017.
