  • This one is old old old, written in 1856 by the Polish composer Tekla Bądarzewska-Baranowska, it was first published that same year in Warsaw Poland, and then at the 1859 Revue et gazette musicale de Paris, it was also originally written as a solo piano piece, well, Ray couldn't stand for that, and I'm sure glad he couldn't, this is a great performance by all, enjoy, Dave

This is one of the most beautiful melodies I have heard. I have been in music business for 71 years. The Cherokee Cowboys did this up right, although I know Bob Wills gave it a jump start as well as giving Ray Price a jump start. I did not know the beautiful history of this song or how old it really was. Ann Beckner, 5/22/2016

I knew Ray, everytime I listen to him and seeing his photo like the one above, I get chills, just like I have now and not to mention shedding a tear or two.

I'm not sure I'd say that "Ray couldn't stand for that"... Bob Wills recorded (and essentially wrote) the song in 1935, when Ray was about 10 years old.
Bob wrote the lyrics, and essentially the melody too.
While there is enough similarity to the Polish piece to see that it was obviously an adaptation of the melody by Wills, you wouldn't hear it unless you were familiar with Maiden's Prayer and listening to the old Polish piece looking for similarities.
If you listen closely for them the similarities ARE there, but not very obviously.
You can search here on youtube for Tekla Bądarzewska-Baranowska and come up with several piano recordings of it, if you want to hear for yourself.
You can also find Bob's original 1935 recording, which was played as a two-step: better for dancing a Texas Two Step, but not nearly as pretty to listen to as what Ray is singing in this video.
Bob also recorded a later vocal version which I believe is the absolute worst singing I've ever heard come out of Tommy Duncan. You can also search out both of those here, if you have a mind to.
I wish Ray had stuck more closely to Bob's lyrics, but otherwise, his version (in this video) is the finest vocal that I think anyone's ever done.
