Why are "Life Hack" videos so stupid? (Simply Nailogical & Ben reflect)

  • Somewhere in the stupid banality of testing Banana Life Hacks, Ben and I reflect on the culture of the Life Hack genre and its informational emptiness, question why people click, and go on a tangent in discussing the frustration felt among audiences when UA-camrs repeatedly remind everyone that they work the hardest. What do you think? montage comment down below!

And I agree, Cristine and Ben are both extremely humble and down to reality. Despite getting good income from UA-cam, Cristine haven't left her day job, which she loves. I aspire to be like Cristine now. Fun and goofy, but serious and mature and educated.

Thank you so much for this video! I I find it really frustrating to see big youtubers, especially vloggers, whine about how hard their life is. I am a full time student with two jobs I hate but need, just to earn enough money to be able to afford food. You vlog your life and can afford going on a vacation in a 5 star hotel four times a year and buy anything you want. Which is great! I would love that as well but a little self-reflection doesn't hurt. Sorry for the rant but it was nice getting some reassurance on this

Two of my jobs I work with babies and young children with disabilities and my one job I work as a counselor in a domestic violence shelter. It’s frustrating to hear UA-camrs say how hard their life is and how hard they work with little to show for it while sitting on a pile of cash, as I work over 50 hours per week with disabled kids and traumatized adults struggling to make ends meet.

And the people who are in a position, as in, they have a really big following, to create videos that perhaps engage with people on a more real level are typically so in that UA-cam bubble that they really don’t think about it anyway :/

The reflections segment... That is the exact reason I stopped watching a couple of makeup channels. Oh, you're exhausted today? You filmed twoooo videos in your California mansion? You're complaining to the very people who make your lifestyle possible, by watching your videos and using your codes and buying your products. Get some damn perspective. Anyway, rant over, thank you Cristine and Ben for being smart and sharing your thoughtful wisdom and humor with the world! 💖💿

    • @ceh0162
      @ceh0162 6 років тому

Jamie Lamie that's a very good point. Traveling, doing appearances, and having meetings behind the scenes are all definitely time consuming and mentally draining. I should clarify that it was comments made on snapchat, specifically about filming and posting videos, that led me to unfollow. I just can't imagine working half a day and then complaining to my boss that my job is hard, especially if I know my boss works longer hours and does a lot to support me. It was just a comment that was made too often for my liking, but then again I'm not in the target demographic so my opinion is irrelevant. Everybody is entitled to a good whine once in a while, but I think some people who owe their success and lifestyle to their UA-cam subscribers should not, essentially, be telling the subscribers that making content for them is a burden. Again, that's just how it came across to me, and I totally agree that it is definitely a lot of hard work to maintain a successful channel and brand!

I think the reason that a lot of people don't call out youtubers who whine about how much work they do in the comments (relative to their own work) is an age thing. A lot of more vocal commenters and people involved in youtube communities haven't reached an age yet where they know how much work a 9-5 or a shift job is. And as a result when their favourite youtuber posts an emotional video about how tough their life is (an emotional video they also profit with), they don't question it. And are likely to downvote and insult the shit out of anyone who does dare to question it.

Wish I could like this video more than once!
    100% how I feel about UA-cam culture
As someone who's going to college for at least 6 years (4left!) to work for the next forty for about average money (at pediatric speech pathology which by the way I love and am passionate about) it's sometimes annoying to see these people the same age drop out of college (or not go at all) to make millions from vlogging themselves getting coffee everyday, shopping at expensive stores, and complaining about editing one video each week. Their ideas arent even original or unique. One person does a "trend" and every youtuber does the same exact video for a month.
This is why I love your channel
You are a great example of someone doing what they love in addition to a 9-5. So glad you did this type of video when a lot of your viewers are young people wanting to be UA-camrs.
Trust me. I am extremely creative. I love decorating and can do better and more useful diys and "life hacks" than half these people I watch. But I'm not gonna drop out of college to do it.
    To younger people reading this:
Get a degree in what you can live off of (hopefully you enjoy it) THEN do your hobbies on the side. If you can make money doing it great! For example, my twin brother is studying engineering. He wants to build an app or invent something, but he acknowledges the fact that it's not guaranteed to happen or create lasting revenue so he's studying a sure thing that he can live off of first.
Sorry for the long comment. Just remember, being a youtuber is not a lasting job and college is way more important and useful. Think towards the future. Don't focus so much on instant gratification.

Good comment, well i fully agree with you, but then irl I kinda struggle with my stable job. Not really enjoying it. While studied in college I was thinking "eh I can keep with this". But now the problems, while for some people those can be challanging and fun... I feel its monotous, boring, just adding stress into mylife. My job is the one kind of stable and the most easy to find in my country, yet for me its lack of colour and creativity and fun.
Maybe I dont have good mentality, like you do. Do you have any idea how to handle this (if this had happend in your life)? I would glad to hear your opinion about this.

Rebecca O'Sullivan obvious, but they don’t easily become millionaires like youtubers do. They have to spend 8 years max or even more to get where they have to go and get a 6 figure salary, while youtubers only post content every week about “Things I got from Wish!” Or “story time” videos and become rich off of that.

This may be the best video you've ever released on this channel. I couldn't agree more with you about the dumb "life hacks" that don't make anything easier, ever! Some other things I hate that so many entitled UA-camrs do are monthly "favorite" videos because I really don't give af WHAT they bought (or were sent) that they "love" this month, all the stupid "haul" videos with bag after bag of crap they never NEED, AND those disgusting PR box openings. I can't hardly believe makeup companies send NOBODIES that average 5-10,000 views PR boxes worth THOUSANDS of dollars! I've seen them get EVERYTHING, in every color, an entire line makes. It's not like a woman with fair skin can use chocolate colored foundation. But now I understand why some foundations cost $30+ a bottle-- it's because they send out hundreds of thousands of dollars of FREE stuff to people who don't need it. (It's also why all the women's magazines show photos of new cosmetics spilled all over or hacked out of the pans.) It's all so horribly wasteful. Those videos are just so... "Look how special *I am,* and how much stuff *I have* that YOU DON'T and never will." It's disgusting. There's one UA-camr with whom I have a love-hate relationship because she's just SO entitled. She wastes SO MUCH money! Her monthly "budget" just for herself (salon services, HUGE Sephora hauls, constant Stitch Fix and other subscription boxes, cosmetic procedures, teeth whitening and etc.) is at least three times my whole family's ENTIRE monthly budget, and she doesn't even have a JOB. I understand why there are whole webpages dedicated to people who hate her.

@The Pickles-- And you have too much time on _your_ hands if you read all that and *then* had enough time to leave a snide comment. And yes, I DO have too much time on my hands. I have a degenerative nerve disease (very painful) and have been forced out of my profession and onto disability. I used to do pen and ink art but that was exacerbating my nerve disease to the point where I had to wear a wrist brace to lift the covers off myself in bed. Any other potshots you wanna take at the middle-aged crippled lady?

Don't let these people get to you. They are only a fraction of a people. Let them be. They will suffer in the future. Very few of them have actually been intelligent enough to launch a successful business out of their UA-cam business. I look at these entitled people on the Internet and think that one day they will be suffering a lot. They have built up a habit of spending too much. And then when their subscribers will leave ( they will leave because people actually have life. Not everyone is going to watch their videos for years and years) , they will suffer. UA-cam isn't a life long career. UA-cam is already getting stricter about paying people. And UA-cam isn't going to be there forever. Seeing these people spend money like water really irritates me too but whatever. Its their life. Let them destroy it or build. Let's live our own life happily okay?

I cannot love this particular video anymore if I tried. You both hit the nail on the head and made so many good points. A lot of UA-camrs have forgotten the value of money because it's essentially just being thrown at them at this point, with undoubtedly less stress than you would get working in either a food or retail industry (I've done both- I cry er'ry time). Cristine actually still works outside of UA-cam.
    You two are just awesome.

I think though that what UA-camrs like Lilly Singh, D-Trix and Ryan do work maybe harder than the average person with even conventional jobs. Because they do scripted content that requires hardwork, production etc.
Lilly runs Girl Love, works with UNESCO, has started a production company, has done two world tours and has never done dumb videos of challenges and hauls.

Yes its a real job, no they are not working as hard as most people. The youtubers you mentioned have editors now. Thet don't even edit their own videos anymore. Don't confuse hard work with effort. As someone who's teaching six classes at four different colleges this semester AND producing a podcast (and maybe even launching a vlog), I can definitely attest to the difference of doing 9-5 work and doing the work of producing this type of content - which you do brilliantly, by the way. I'm reminded of Arin from Game Grumps. He got insanely lucky at a young age by being recognised as an animator on Newgrounds and youtube and managed to make it a career. Then he and another fairly prominent UA-cam personality made a gaming channel, and they became known largely for making some of the first personality driven comedy gaming content.
Now Arin, CEO of a company that came about mostly through sheer luck, says that school is a waste of time because he dropped out of high school.

I totally agree with this video. There’s this one you tuber who I will not name (*cough* *cough* Deligracy), I used to love them before they had loads of subscribers because you could tell she put effort in but now, you can tell she doesn’t care. When a few of her videos got demonetised she had a rant how she puts a lot of effort in and this is her job, but a few videos and she’s poor? I don’t think so. This is just one example of many UA-camrs who annoy me with this, and I can proudly say I don’t want to be a UA-camr for my job.

    • @SwayTree
      @SwayTree 6 років тому +3

Nicole Frisby Well actually demonatization can pretty harmfull if you are not an international UA-camr. You create videos in a not popular language. Your audiance is much smaller. The thing is that a peek of view for a video is just after uploading. And if UA-cam's algorithm marks your video as not safe you can disagree and they often say that your right, but you already lost most of the money, because your viewers have already seen the video. This a thing for gaming channels. You make a review of a game but the game itself is 18+. You don't put anything bad in the video, but game's name is in the title. It's enough. And I understand why people are a bit salty...

    • @NicoleFrisby

Nicole Frisby What annoyed me about demonitization is all the UA-camrs who cried about being poor after one or two demonitized videos. I get that it pays their bills but it's also generally smart to put some money away for savings every pay check...so when they whine about being poor theyre either lying or were stupid spending. Idk about everyone else but I don't have any sympathy for anyone who was stupid with their money. UA-cam is now their full time job so they need to act like it and be responsible since they're self-employed. Fans aren't responsible for their hobby-turned business failing and should be responsible to pay for it (coufhPATREONcough)

My husband drives 45 minutes to work every morning, installs kitchen appliances, fixes plumbing, snakes out peoples sump pumps, crawls under houses to fix leaks (in a North Dakota winter of an average 0°F) and then drives home, perpetually an hour later than he is supposed to. He is generally gone an average of 11 1/2 hours a day. For $15/hour. That's it. 26 and his back is already messed up, his knees hurt constantly, and after going to the hospital we found out he is in the beginning stages of arthritis in his wrists. That is the kind of stuff a lot of people struggle with. I can't find a job that doesn't pay minimum wage, and it would cost money, in the end, for me to work since the cost of day care for our sons would take up more money than I would make. So I have to stay home, slowly going out of my mind because I am always alone. That is real life, youtubers.

    This is a little TL;DR but I hope it's worth a read.
Whenever Ben joins you for a video, I like the real-world perspective he brings into it. I think you both are two of the most honest people on UA-cam in terms of not making up a fake personality and being up-front about what you don't like about UA-cam/UA-camrs for the sake of making money.
I don't think I've heard this level of realtalk in any of your other videos so this is definitely one of my new favorite videos. I really enjoy when you guys talk about the inconguencies between what UA-camrs say and their audience. Not many UA-camrs are willing to be so open about these topics and I think that is what has caused the surge of young viewers to be fooled into thinking they can easily make a life out of making videos with sub-par content and not need to go to college; the people influencing these kids aren't doing anything to dissuade this behavior because they probably didn't get an education and haven't had to work a 9-5, so they don't know the real world struggle. It's almost like taking advice from a cartoon...
So I think influential figures like the two of you have a much less harmful impact on the more impressionable viewers because you're willing to break the stigma (I guess you could call it) of choosing telling the truth over giving us bullshit that we hear from every other sorry-for-themselves UA-camr that gets to go on "business trips" *cough*vacation*cough* every couple weeks but still complains about being exhausted from work.
*** TL;DR Thank you for breaking the UA-cam 4th wall and talking so candidly and honestly and giving your viewers advice that will actually help them in life, like getting an education.

I mean ofcourse i truly believe some youtubers work way harder than we think but it's people who don't even do anything else apart from making a catchy/clickbaity thumbnail to fool their viewers and you can't do anything about it, you know you're gonna fall for it again bc it's human psychology. I LOVE how intellectual and down to earth you both are. I can watch your content and I feel like I'm actually watching real people which is so rare with other creators now. Not that I don't respect what they do, but you guys really keep that balance of good content and being a regular person. Its just really inspiring to me. Its the pick me up I needed right before I start college so thank you. 💖💞💗

I think that Cristine thinks that when Simplymomlogical comes out to play, then her videos get boring, but I really like listening to Cristines views because she's really smart and it's nice to see her be serious. I love simplymomlogical.

You are one of the most honest UA-camrs. You may have a few acts you put on for exaggeration of entertainment, but you are not afraid to be blunt and truthful witb viewers and I deeply respect that.

Rainsplash She does make money off it, but it’s not her or Ben’s only source of income so they don’t take it as seriously as most other youtubers who have their level of subscribers. Cool thing about having an actual career!

sentimental sock They both have office jobs. As far as I know, Cristine is a statistician - she analyzes the data from crime scenes. So UA-cam is literally something she does on the side for fun on the weekends

^^^^seriously!!! as a subscriber who isn’t 12 years old and sits in an office job it get paid an 1/8 of what a youtuber does is upsetting. to see something that despite its filming and editing quality, has content that would be beneficial to absolutely no one ever (even comically) none the less to falsely advertise something as a “life hack” , or to click bait to an extreme-sImPlY (😉) to gain a view.

An important note on the 'youtubers work' discussion: It's also really condescending to poor people/people who live in poverty. Like, yes, you do work, but you do work *YOU ENJOY DOING* for way more than you ACTUALLY need to survive, whereas my father has worked himself to the point where on bad days he can BARELY MOVE without assistance and we have *NEVER* been financially sound. We have fought tooth and nail for every little scrap of anything, we've gone without soap before, without shampoo, without food, and that's with my dad keeping a steady job and being DILIGENT with his work.
Content creators on UA-cam work hard. but the work is not hard work. There is a huge difference between hard work and working hard. It's like comparing a 3 page event reflection essay to a 15 page research one (for sake of analogy the grade received is top marks on both): both people worked hard on the essay, but the 15 page one required more work and generally harder work (research essays are FAR harder than just writing 3 pages reflecting on an event).
(what i said doesn't apply to 'uploads videos daily' UA-camrs. That's a different ballpark)

Umber I couldn’t agree more. IMO manual labor or retail are so much more exhausting than white collar jobs.
I’m also really glad that Cristine is doing scholarship giveaways. She’s promoting education and helping people who are actually struggling to pay to make their futures better. Beats any MacBook giveaway garbage in my book.

This is why I love Cristine, she actually acknowledges that being a UA-camr is way easier than what most people have to go through and she doesn’t act like she’s better than everyone else just cause she has 5 million subscribers. She also isn’t like many celebrities that are all like “Follow your dreams and you will make it!” Because the reality it that most people don’t make it when they just throw everything away to be a famous singer, actor or whatever else and it’s nice to see someone finally going against the norm of encouraging people to give everything up to do something that’s not very secure.
This is so long, rant over😂

There are millions of people out there who work just as hard as you tubers do, so no, they don't really work "harder" than regular people. What people don't realize is that when you tubers get really big to the point that they're celebrities, they're not doing everything themselves anymore. Even if they film and edit everything on their own, they have sponsors and income, which allows them to have access to better tools. They can afford lawyers and people to help them out etc.
