I’ve had a similar experience when I was almost attacked by a shark while swimming when I was 13 only to have my brother’s friend (16) suddenly grab me and swim me all the way back to shore. It’s an incredibly calming feeling, he was a faster swimmer at the time so just feeling myself get pulled away from certain danger cannot be described.

When someone says “I got you” or “I gotcha” it is like an automatic mental relief for the person being rescued. When someone says “I gotcha” the fear subsides and replaced with hope.

When you cling onto someone convulsing and struggling for their very life, and you softly repeat those words....
I genuinely don't even have the words to describe the emotion.
In that moment you literally join souls.
It's a promise on all that's holy, before all the gods that ever were, that no force on earth will drag you away from them.
14 years as a supervisor in disability services I've had to do this several times for my guys.
I don't think the fear leaves them, but the courage those words give helps them fight.
"I've got you, look at me, c'mon mate it's ok I've got you"
The most powerful sentence I've ever spoken, and the most painful.
You are not promising to save them, you can't make that promise.
you are taking an oath that you will not abandon them no matter what.
I burned out and resigned in 2011.
To this day I can still see the looks in their eyes.
The fear, desperation and begging.....and to see that look change as you say those magic words.
And YOUR fear skyrockets as you pray you're telling them the truth when you reassure them they'll make it.

For those wondering how this happened; Basically picture a large pine tree or any coniferous tree, the way their branches angle most of the snow down and away from it slightly. This creates a kind of pocket of air immediately next to the trunk of the tree and when you have like 7 feet of snow accumulation in the high altitude tree lines there is a deep cavity directly beside the tree trunk. If you are unlucky enough like this snowboarder to lose your balance and fall back into a tree or forward into one you can literally fall right down to the bottom of these holes (called tree-wells) and then the surrounding snow will just fall in on top of you and suffocate you the harder you struggle. In some places they kill more people every year than avalanches, cliffs or anything else. This guy was 100% going to die.

Can't you feel your way to the tree trunk and use it to support yourself up? Also how was this guy being rescued breathing under that pile of snow? How would he suffocate if not rescued then? Does air seep in slowly but not fast enough to sustain your oxygen requirement? The guy being rescued in the video seemed fine and wasn't gasping for air.

@@Grejegando Snow is too compact (and heavy) too let you move when you're buried that deep and upside down. As for suffocating, maybe air got to him slowly as you said or a pocket of air was created allowing him some room to breath but eventually he'd run out of oxygen. Who knows, maybe he could've lasted several more minutes or hour, but eventually if nobody gets him out of there, things other than suffocating will get him as well
