Excellent video with a lot to think about. On balance I think there are far less connected areas of Glasgow and it's surrounding towns where the money could be better spent, however, this would no doubt improve connectivity and the existing line and the fact that a station once existed would no doubt make this far more cost effective than more impactful changes like re connecting the old Maryhill Road station or finally getting some kind of train service out to Newton Mearns.
Excellent idea. Fare/ticket connectivity really needs to be looked at in Glasgow too; it's a bit silly that it isn't possible to make streamlined through journeys using Subway and ScotRail, especially as the latter serves areas like Finnieston that the subway doesn't even get close to.
@@s125ish yes that was possible. I used to sell many of them. However, all Subway tickets now require a chip so the railway ticket issuing systems (with the exception of smart) are no longer compatible.
It is all pie in the sky. What is the point of reopening finnieston railway station then pull the plug on the train service ten years later due to a lack of passengers it is economic madness. They should be investing and improving the existing railway lines to Newton neilston and Cathcart circle routes but as usual it's always the West end of Glasgow that gets funding from those car bashing local councillors in Glasgow it bloody stinks.
I would agree the west end is a bit cut off but a Finnieston station still seems a bit close to SEC station. Just change at Partick if youy want the Queen Street route if going east. What we really need in Glasgow is a rail link to the airport.
Your videos are incredible as always. Never though this section is part of North Clyde line, thought it is an unused tunnel that leads towards remnants of Botanic Garden and Kelvinbridge railway stations. A station here would be really nice to have, that would increase a footfall in Finnieston from the North of Glasgow
Great wee video! You may have already heard about this, but I think you would be interested in the campaign to reopen the Alloa - Dunfermline line to the public again. It would mean people could once again travel directly into Fife from Glasgow instead of changing trains in Edinburgh. Have a look into it, maybe you could do a video on it :)
There is a disused railway line from there that goes to Kelvinbridge, which you can see on Google Earth, then under Great Western Road to Botanic Gardens, then to Maryhill, which you can see on Google Earth. I think that line should be reopened to passengers.
I love that you're still doing videos on Glasgow. I love our "low level" trains, though I do really think it deserves to be transformed a la the London Overground. Speaking of which, have you heard about the "Clyde Metro" proposals? My girlfriend pointed-out they were published a year or two ago, and they all suggest quite good things for trams and metro rail 👀 I'd love to see your take on it!
If they’d just coordinate the busses, trains abd subway ticketing. I needed to go to Drumchapel today to get a flue shot and there was no way to get there from my house without needing two different providers. I chose a train ticket and two bus journeys costing £9 total, but there were combinations costing up to £15 and using multiple bus companies and/or the train so you needed a return ticket each. Just to go get my flu shot. Of course I just missed a bus for my return journey. And the next one didn’t come. And the stop didn’t have a shelter. At least the rain was really light today. Walking 10-20 minutes at some point was also an option, on better days I wouldn’t have used the bus for the last bit after the train station. but I’m having walking issues just now.
@@professormcgorgeous there’s brand new plans which came out of the Integrated Travel Review mentioned in the video! And, like, it took London what, 60? 70? years to build Crossrail. Things can happen! We got a lot of branch lines reopened in the 2010s, which in the 2000s people said would never happen. The main one I’m excited for is the buses down Dumbarton Road possibly becoming trams finally. Since it was talked about in 2014, and they even raised bus stops and redid Partick bus station… then nah just keep it a bus. It’s already half done and apparently the reduction in journey times and traffic is economically worth it now? Of course cancellation is always an option, until the very end, but. Not to mention, the plans to redo and integrate ticketing city-wide doesnae necessarily require building anything new. It’d just be nice if the proposed metro and tram to the hospital ALSO happens!
Yes, I agree the West End needs a station. Any time I travel from Cambuslang to there, I have to get off the train in the city centre, then take the Subway or a bus, which costs a small fortune. A cheaper alternative is to get an all day bus ticket, but it takes so long. We either need a station or ticket connectivity.
Ticket connectivity is the answer! Glasgow has far better public transport options than most people give it credit for but current zone card pricing is prohibitively expensive for a lot of travelers which forces people to choose one travel method rather than making full use of busses/trains/subway.
Great idea, tremendous content. Outside of Glasgow, Kirkintilloch should have a station, could easily be a terminus one stop from Lenzie (like Mill Hill East on the Northern Line). They actually used to have a station back in the day, shame Beeching closed it!
I would go further and say the whole of the Strathkelvin line should be reopen if possible to also connect the likes of Lennoxtown, Milton of Campsie etc. Some line closures they jutified as serving places with very few people and other services were available, but the removal of this line that served populous areas without any other form of mass transit but an unreliable bus was ludicrous. Unfortunately while remnants of the railway survive as a walkway, it might be difficult to reconstruct the section through Kirkintilloch which is developed. Maybe a tram service would be needed then to get through the streets? I would imagine that would get no shortage of opposition from nimbys though.
BBQ Kings Masif! New place is just a burger joint, it's alright but doesn't do those brilliant chicken pakoras of old. Rafi's tacos are the best and that entire arcade alley is popping just now. Connecting the Hydro to the Northern line would be great for a bunch of reasons. Partick is super but it's tucked away at the far West end of the West End and Queen Street is bustling so hard that getting from upper to lower level can really eat up a lot of time for travellers. But your suggestion is just a continuation of the Queen Street to Partick line (Via Charing Cross). What really needs to be explored is the old underground rail line which cuts under the city and goes North beneath the Botanic Gardens (You can still look down to it from within there at the Great Western Road side) and out towards Kirkintilloch. Adding an additional flow of people in from just South of the Campsie Fells, cutting out the strain on the city centre and the West section of the city. If properly paired and synchronised with the airport could mean an immediate vacation to the West Coast for those arriving by plane or those leaving Scotland cutting out the main city altogether. Great video, keep it up and hope to see more thoughts on Glasgow and the surrounding areas soon.
Its weird that there's nothing between Charing Cross and Partick. It would be extremely handy if you are wanting to get between the Merchant City and the West End.
I used to stay on Derby Street around 2001/2 and i always thought that the line running under Dumbarton Road/Argyle Street would have made for a more handy station than the Exhibition Centre.
The West end per capita already takes more than it's fair share of taxpayer money. Students don't pay any tax, let them walk to the existing stations, burn off some fat calories. IMO
While I like your videos, a train station at your suggested location would be very close to the Exhibition Centre. If anything a station further West would be more useful to serve Yorkhill and the Glasgow Harbor. There is an unusually large distance from Charring Cross Exhibition Centre to Partick for what is a built up area. This area did historically have more stations, e.g. Partick Central, Yorkhill, so it would be replacing what was there before.
Glasgow West End, I think it should get a new station or have new trains going to Braehead or Glasgow Airport Erskine as well that’s what we need a better line that goes up the north end because the network is rubbish
your mistaken. Argyle St is East of Glasgow Central and he is on about a site between Charing X and Partick on the Queen St low level line. Two separate lines
@@nickbiskinis4854 not 100% sure about a circle, but Clyde Metro has to be the top priority, converting as many suburban lines to hard metro as possible, short trains every 2-5 minutes and fast transit to Subway at West Street. And buses that circulate across the district to deliver people to train stations with a single ticket, not driving 2 hours across the whole city, having 1 hour gap. 15 minute circular routes would be just right. With checking-in inside the bus, not at the doors, to make it faster. And bike lanes as an alternative
