    I thought this was an interesting response for the 'plants feel pain' argument: We don't necessarily even 'kill' a plant to get plant foods. For example, we don't chop the whole tree to get an apple. When we pick an apple off a tree, the tree does not die, the tree will just grow another apple. Can't say the same about pulling a leg off an animal though.

    • @NLR759
      @NLR759 5 років тому +39

      Yes! And many plants die on their own, wether we harvest them or not. Potatoes, for example, are harvested only after the potato plant has died on it's own. Rice and wheat is another plant that dies on it's own when the seeds are mature.

      @@christylbk And if they were wild cows they would either get eaten alive by predators or live long enough to wear all their teeth down to nothing and then slowly die of starvation from not being able to eat. You lot talk about the way we treat animals like they would be better off without us but in reality their potential for suffering is a lot higher in the wild than it is in our care.

    • @greenbluegrass
      @greenbluegrass 5 років тому +39

      @@sticks7857 Check out Chillingham wild cattle.
      If you go by straight percentages, basically 100% of farmed animals in animal agriculture suffer and are killed. The percentage of wild animals that are tortured and killed is significantly lower. And nobody is suggesting we should just turn human-bred cows out into the wild to fend for themselves. We are saying that we should stop breeding them and take responsibility for the ones already here with sanctuaries.

    I remember one of my adult classmates before saying, “Oh, my friend’s kids are Vegan but she shouldn’t force her beliefs on them, she should just wait and let them decide if they want to be Vegan at 18.” And in my mind I was just like... WTH! Because...
    1. If kids would see what happens in a slaughterhouse they would go Vegan anyways.
    2. There is scientific evidence that Vegan kids are healthier in comparison to non-Vegan kids.
    3. Why would you want to teach your own kids that violence towards animals is normal?
    4. It’s you who is blindly believing that eating animal products is healthy when it 100% isn’t.
    5. You don’t ask your kids for permission with things like, “Do you want to get your immunisations this year? Would you like to go to school today?” ect.
    6. By purchasing animal products you are destroying the environment and thus, also your kid’s future.
    But yeah... I had wanted to tell my classmate my thoughts but it was literally the last day that I would see her and there wasn’t enough time/people over talking. :/ I will try to be faster next time though.

    • @japjaw1
      @japjaw1 4 роки тому +2

      Not sure if any of you have kids, but I do. There's a huge risks when you force kids to do something they don't want to do--especially when all the social norms and social pressure are against you. When they become old enough to make their own choices, there is a huge risk they will go in the opposite direction and aggressively do exactly the opposite of what you have forced them to do. I have kids, and I encourage them to eat a plant-based diet. But I don't force them because I do not want to provoke them into becoming belligerent meat eaters as soon as they are out of my control. Right now they are still choosing to eat chicken and fish. I wasn't vegan when they were toddlers, so they have already developed a taste for it. I hope someday they will follow my example and give up meat, but I think the most likely path to them becoming lifelong vegans is to let them make their own choice now all while making sure they understand why I myself make different choices.

    What about Iron? I get it from plants, alongside with vitamin C.
    What about B12? I get it from fortified plant food.
    But that's not natural! Yes it is, everything comes from nature.
    But that's not healthy! Yes it is, because you body requires (insert nutrient) to function properly.
    What if you were stuck on a desert island? Then we wouldn't be having this discussion.
    Why don't you eat (insert animal product here)? Because I don't want to.
    What about the plant's feelings? Plants don't have emotions.
    How do you know that? Scientific research and peer reviewed data.

      The V symbol on the hat, used to indicate vegan, is actually a Kosher certification symbol that was in existence and trademarked well before it became used for vegan products.
      I found this out as I was very confused about it because I saw it on lettuce, then on tofurky items in addition to a Kosher certification symbol on some of their products but alone on some of their other products, then on something I was fairly certain was not vegan, then on something I was fairly certain wasn't kosher.
      I researched it and found out about it being a trademarked Kosher certification that was causing issues for people trying to eat Kosher, people trying to eat vegan, and people trying to eat both.
      I think vegan companies should stick with the vegan heart certified vegan logo or a universal vegan certification. This circle V- and so many different symbols - is confusing (and possibly not quite legal).

And then they'll quote some book like "Grain Brain", showing that other scientists believe in meat, paleo, keto, atkins, etc.

      In fact, they go as far as to say “Based on this relationship a formula is developed for estimating the degree of total tissue protein deficiency from the value of the serum albumin concentration alone.”
      I am open to being convinced not to use this but I honestly view it as a very powerful statement and I need a very compelling reason to stop using it.

      Hmm that's kind of a stupid answer. Saying a rhetorical question won't do anything. I'll just tell them that soy has plant estrogens which don't affect animal estrogen levels. Milk has animal estrogen which actually does have an effect on human estrogen levels. But even IF soy did contain animal estrogen, it still wouldn't affect a man's masculinity since testosterone is so overpowering and a heightened level of estrogen won't affect you pretty much at all. That's why for example trans women in addition to taking estrogen, have to block their testosterone for the hormone treatment to actually have an effect. (also someone please correct me if I'm wrong lol)

    I'm at a point of frustration I don't know how to resolve... I can't get anyone to understand that I don't WANT meat, it is disgusting and has zero appeal to me, so they can't understand that them trying to convince me to eat meat is like trying to convince someone who hates olives to eat olives every day just because someone else likes olives and thinks everyone is supposed to. I'm not "resisting temptation" by not eating animals, I absolutely do not WANT it. But people can't grasp that concept and think giving me grief will eventually wear me down and make me "cave" and return to eating animals... I don't know how to get these people to understand...

People for the Ethical Treatment of Carrots doesn't exist because everyone knows the difference between taking a carrot out of the ground and slicing a pig into pieces. Everyone also knows the difference between mowing a lawn and tossing a live baby male chick (egg industry) into a rendering machine. If one does not understand the difference, then that person is disingenuous, irrational and illogical. The fact that some people compare carrots to cows proves how muck-deep in oppressive thought meat, dairy and egg-eaters truly are.

    The argument I hear most is B12 deficiency, which I counter by asking them where they get THEIR B12 from, which they will always reply "meat and/or dairy", then I ask how every animal we consume produces their own B12 but humans are somehow incapable? This will stump then, and THEN I reveal to them that B12 actually comes from consuming dirt and fecal matter from poor water supplies and that farmed animals are heavily supplemented with B12 in their feed so therefore just act as a middle man for the supplent, so we're both getting our B12 from supplentation just mine doesn't involve death. And they usually don't have an answer to that part.

    • @ChefJollyRoger
      @ChefJollyRoger Рік тому

      Perhaps recheck your sources since b12 from dirt is not a thing.
      Cows obtain vitamin B12 from their diet, specifically from microorganisms that live in their rumen, which is a large fermentation chamber in their digestive system. These microorganisms produce vitamin B12 as a byproduct of their metabolism, which is then absorbed into the cow's bloodstream and stored in their liver. This means that cows can provide a natural dietary source of vitamin B12 for humans who consume their meat or dairy products.
      No hate brother, just hoping this myth of b12 from dirt dies soon

    Great vid. But I have to disagree with the one about being stranded on an island. If we were stranded in, say, the moutains of Alberta, Canada we can’t just try to “eat what other herbivores eat” because we humans didn’t evolve in the same way native species in Alberta did, hence we can’t just start eating pine trees and the grass on the ground. There are only certain vegetables that are edible for humans, most of which are in the tropics, where we did evolve thousands of years ago.
    A better comeback is to say “Well, when people have found themselves in such desparate situations they have often resorted to cannibalism. Does that mean we should all be cannibals on a daily basis even though we don’t have to be?”

    No one says anything when they find out about me being vegan. I'm a pretty big guy and in great shape so I like to think people can clearly see I'm doing something right and definitely not lacking protein etc. haha
    That and I'm friendly and confident about exchanging dietary information and discussing nutrition so people are always inclined to take it on board and ask questions rather than argue or mock.
    It's important to note that I went plant based for personal health rather than for ethical reasons which [unfortunately] adds credibility to the discussion as I can actually back up my reasons with facts rather than relying on emotional arguments. The ethical and environmental impacts for me are just a HUGE bonus that comes with it so I know I'm making the right choice on multiple levels.
    I feel this is the way to go about it as no one will take you seriously if you go into a conversation saying you're doing it for the animals etc. as you just get labelled a crazy activist straight off the bat and this causes conflict between the movement and the rest of society. I strongly suggest all conversations about being vegan MUST start with the health benefits to gain interest and by pointing out the dangers of many animal products, before going into further detail about the ethical and environmental benefits that follow as a consequence!
