  • Me and Iris ventured around the ruins of the 900-year-old, mysterious lost civilization of Angkor Wat and wanted to capture the true experience you'll have visiting this grand, stunning piece of history.
Despite its beauty, there are some problems (like every other place in the world) and we felt you should know because... after all, it's quite an expensive attraction for many travelers. Everyone just seems to show all the good bits. So, here's our real experience at Angkor Wat - one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture in the entire world.
Our driver was incredible and there are lots of pure people in Cambodia who are happy to help, if you're ever in the area please consider giving him a booking, his service was incredible compared to some and he deserves it.
He has confirmed he would like to share his number(s):

Thank you for visiting Cambodia the kingdom of wonder
The land of 2000 years history
Many of our kings took more than 400 years to build this great city, which embodied many of Cambodia's historical stories and inscribed them on the country's inscriptions, before Thailand began their history years
I hope you will remember this trip and come back here one day again

So, what's actually the problem? Desperately poor people politely offering things?
The chap who approached you at Angkor Wat is an official, well trained tour guide. I employed one for the first day of touring 3 temples (was recommended by a friend) and it was not only useful but really enjoyable. I learned a great deal not just about the temples but aboutancient and recent history, and the varied and challenging life of a local family man. He took me to a good food place, explained so much. As you started mentioning it, I actually thought you were going to go more deeply into the forced resumption/relocation of local communities. Landgrabs with a derisory compensation. But you accepted 'Govt gives free houses?' Actually, a fraction of the land price and a few pieces of tin, meanwhile people lose their gardens/houses/communities. Now THAT is a story 'they won't show you'.
As you go around Angkor Wat,, you're 'wondering' about things a guide could have explained to you (including the sources for his information)- the engineering, the rotation of roles between workers (not slaves) etc. The musicians you show are landmine victims. A guide could have explained a great deal about the complexity of the civil wars and ongoing landmine issues. Seems you did at least get to pick the brains of your tuk tuk driver a bit, so you didn't miss out on all the details.
And Windsor Castle has no weapons? You must have missed out on a proper tour of that too !

Thanks for the comment appreciate the time you put into it. I’m sure you had a great time and I know the guy who approached me was official. Not saying they are scammers if that’s what you’re getting at. I am sharing my experience and a part people cut out of their videos (amongst all the positive great bits). After a ticket you will be asked for money again multiple times.
The temples are fantastic but it’s annoying to have to walk through that after you’ve paid quite a bit already. I cut out another few occasions it happening. Not the end of the world… no you’re completely right, but it is something people do not show and I’d rather share that truth than edit it all out. The harassing in Cambodia for money is next level (close to Morocco bad). Edit: not whole of Cambodia, the tourist regions like SR, SV, PP etc. Take the guy who waited 20 minutes for me to finish my meal after saying no clearly a few times. When the chap started asking me to help a local it felt a lot like this situation and I politely declined, but he kept going. I still politely declined, went on my way and enjoyed my myself regardless.
      As for the relocation point:
We did get further into it and how he thought it was a bad thing but the language barrier didn’t really translate well. I later found out about the forced relocation to homes of lesser value which is a bad thing. But then I guess you could also argue the point of it bringing a lot of money to Cambodia if they clear up the site. I personally think it’s wrong.
      On the landmine point:
This was described in the video if I’m not wrong? We talk about them being injured from land mines. I don’t fully get what he said at the time, but I understood when editing. Sometimes you don’t fully pick up on things in the moment with the language barriers which is cool! My bad if it’s not translated correctly.
And yeah my bad on the Windsor castle comment! My mistake. I don’t remember it when going as a young lad.
Glad to hear you had a good time. I did too! Hope to return some day and see it all again. I’m sure it will be even better with a tour!
I do feel like it’s almost set up so you have to get a tour though… they could easily implement information plaques with all the money the place gets. But I imagine they get a commission from tours? Correct me if I’m wrong. But if true that’s pretty lucrative.
You must understand these things do dampen the experience for people. Albeit only a little and it’s minor when you actually see the temple, but I spoke to a lot of tourists who had the same exact complaints.
Anyways thanks for watching and taking the time to comment sharing some more knowledge. If we disagree no worries!

I shared with my Khmer wife your experience inside of the Angkor Wat temples = being accosted by multiple staff to purchase “photo” + “tour guide” + etc… after you have spent a large amount to have access to this site. I described how aggravating it is to us western tourists and is so unpleasant, it may hurt the Cambodian tourist economy.
I learned it is not allowed for the service staff at Angkor Wat to hustle tourists like this inside of the park. I hope some one from the Cambodian government sees this video and takes action!
Sorry it put a damper on your experience.

@@wehatethecold Check For Riel on UA-cam for some enlightenment on this matter. Basically, people just squat anywhere after the Khmer Rouge era in 1979. UNESCO said that if the additional structures built by these squatters aren’t removed, they will remove AW from their list of World Heritage Sites. The Cambodian government realizing that the listing and the tourist dollar are important to the economy of the nation as a whole gave each family hard titles to land in another area in Siem Reap and provided monthly stipends to help with the move. It’s a sacrifice for the people who have to move but it was decided that it had to be done.

Just go and enjoy what you want to enjoy at Angkor Wat. Let the government solve whatever the problem they have at hand in order to maintain the unesco status. They have to ask a fair amount of people to a different location, and the government gave them free land and build homes for them for free, including infrastructure, like school, hospital, and market etc. But they are in the process of completing the new community in a new location.

    • @wehatethecold
      @wehatethecold  Рік тому

Oh yeah, they're not scammers. Not what I was trying to say at all. The pushy nature of the sales is what is annoying. After you pay quite a bit you're getting sold again. Bracelets, photos, tours etc. It didn't ruin my day, because you can't ruin the beauty of it and once you leave the main temple, there isn't much of anyone trying to push sales on you.
And not all that I don't want to help locals. I hired my Tuk Tuk, tipped him generously at the end of the day, I've even recommended him in my description for others to book, bought food from local stalls etc.
Just highlighting that you will get constantly asked by many people trying to sell you stuff at the temples after paying for a ticket. No one shares this. Or the fact that locals are getting forcefully removed from the site.

      @wehatethecold  Рік тому

Hey, thanks for the comment. I don't expect it to be the same, just highlighting to others it will happen. However, when considering the price is very close to a lot of popular attractions in the west, I would have expected this less on the inside of the temples.
I mean a Yellowstone Park ticket is less for a 7-day ticket at $35. The top of the rock is $40. Even the Colosseum of Rome is less than $30.
They could easily put up signs, or make a lower-priced audio guide, or make a dedicated stand for tours at the ticket desk, rather than have them dotted around the place. It feels like it's set up this way to exact more money. I imagine the tour guides have to pay to be on-site or maybe they take a commission? Correct me if I'm wrong on that, please.

Well, do you want the temple (and the precious UNESCO status that presumably helps preserve it or do you want tourist shops and locals making it lose that status?
Without additional help, much of what the place has to offer for tourism might get ruined anyhow, right? So its a bit of a catch 22.....lose the status, lose the help keeping it preserved, less people come when things get "nasty" or evict all of those people to preserve the site according to UNESCO guidelines.
Really, tourist have been doing pretty bad things there, from what I can remember. These places need protecting, and they have been told for years and years that they would have to leave.
I just looked this up on google and the Guardian had an article about a woman who sold all of her stuff to open a shop in the temple complex....by the end of the year, it will be gone. On one hand, I feel bad for her. On the other hand, she would have known all along that people were going to get evicted. Before she even got the shop. She was just banking on the government not following through, and she shouldnt have.

If you really learn about Cambodia history, you know it full well that every generations of Cambodia is all about dictatorship and social classification. This is real. Look at the temple. Many people died to build those temples for the king. Cambodians joined Khmer Rouge due to the king's call. Today, they are friends to capitalism because they need the money. Yet, social classification is still alive and well today. You don't see it. That's why they say that Khmer Rouge or something similar will come back one day. I'm not trying to play politics here. People around the world today seem to think that Khmer Rouge is a group of people who controlled the whole country and its population. Khmer Rouge is not just a group of people. They were more than a half of the country. Those leaders managed to bring those peasants and farmers to join them.

Many of those poor peasants had to send their children to work for those average people in the town or city as servants. They never have a chance to go to school. Yes, poor people work for richer people to see their parents and their family survive one day at a time. Then they keep pass on their poverty from one generation to another. Some even borrow money to help their family. That loan comes with a price that they have to pay. Many of them work day in and day out just to pay that loan. Some continue to get more loan to survive. They get themselves deeper and deeper. At the end of the harvest season, they only see very little because the bulk had gone to pay the interest of the loan.
