One time I had a terrorist who did the funding through illegal cigarette sales. He was the most evil person I have ever come across. You should have seen the way he talked to the judge. The husband wasn't home, and had proof of not being home. He also didn't hire his brother. In the story his brother seems to be a professional. He didn't leave any proof.
Time of death would not be able to determine he died before her with the fire. On the other hand, there's no way they would miss the wound caused by a "large knife" in his chest, unless they were completely incinerated which would be impossible without accelerant, which they would easily find.
