in today's adventure I attempt to make an elevator using a $1 motor that will lift me to the ceiling so I can plug in my overhead lights and stop looking like a fool every time I do so

come tell me how bad my mechanical engineering "skills" are
I took AP physics in high school, friction wasn't ignored and neither was air resistance. Take that misinformation. Also the number of times my physics teacher who worked for fortune 500 companies on projects over the summer f'd up his math was hilariously high.
I really don't think you need a reminder of your engineering skills, but you're doing a great job. Your content is good to watch.
Hey maybe they're good maybe not, I haven't finished watching yet but I'm EXCITED about your JLCMC sponsorship, you are my SANTA CLAUS man - something else to spend my money on and hoard more useful crap LMFAO
+1 sub! :D
@currentconcept Why didn't you just lower the outlet? Than you could just reach up and plug things in.
This is like I Did A Thing's less Australian cousin, I feel like I've made a major discovery, thank you algorithm
Your comment was enough for me to subscribe and I've not watched the video yet.

exactly this ,ivr only watched 90 seconds and i know this is going to be a great channel
No.

@@ChuckThree what's wrong with i did a thing ?
Engineers take one problem and turn it into 6 more expensive problems. It’s truly awe inspiring
Only an engineer could go through all this trouble to avoid making a box to stand on
its the only logical solution
@justin.s Why didn't he just lower the outlet so he could reach up to plug things in?
@@Starlite123 The sparkys get mad when we molest their boxes. Carpenters gotta set up scaffolds. IH needs to sign off. It's a whole production. Better to stay in your lane because nobody can tell you you're doing it wrong if they don't know what you're doing.

That was what i was thinking!!
You can see at 7:04 that the motor pulls ~9.0 Amps! Like oh lord!

work harder, not smarter
Or you use belt drive to motor which allows it to slip if it would ruin motor so replace cheaper belt instead like in real world German engineered floor sweeper

1:38 Fun tip! If you ever need to figure out how fast a spindle, wheel or other rotating object is spinning, attach something to it like the piece of tape you have there, then let that tape smack against something else with every rotation, like maybe your ruler. If the spindle is spinning fast enough, the beating of the tape against the ruler will produce a tone. You can then use a tuner (or tuner app)to get the frequency of the tone, which translates directly into rpm.
It's not the most accurate form of measurement, obviously, and it doesn't always work. If your motor is weak enough and your "tape" (or playing card or whatever) is big enough, air resistance might slow your motor significantly. If your motor produces a tone in and of itself, your tuner might pick up on this instead of the beating of the measurement "tape." And if your motor spins too slowly, you'll get a pitch well below human hearing and below what the tuner is designed to measure.
Now, in the case of a common motor like this, the datasheet was definitely the right call :)
bpm tachometer, nice. Maybe use thin piano wire for the measurement.
but if i smack it one time, itll still make noise, and that noise will not be at 1hz itll be at like 500hz
Or just count how many times the taped part spins every minute
Similarly, you can record the sound on your computer and measure the time between the hits.
You'd have to multiply by 60, tho. Hertz is cycles per second.

10:43 bro turned into a full on poet! super cool video :)
Bruh , limit the current to 2: Amps and use 4v max instead of 5v that you are using , the winding of these motors is delicate it can’t handle 18watts of power that you are providing…. Try 8-10 watts of power, it will work like a charm without burning up
Yeah, I was thinking that no matter the resistance you put on it, these shouldn't burn up if they aren't given too much power. They usually just... stop turning.
@@MisterBones223well, the stall current isn’t sufficient to overheat the windings at this power level basically.
@@BritishEngineer Oh, so I'm just imagining that they burned out, right?

I found this video very useful: at one point you mention something about not taking your meds, and it reminded me that I had not taken my meds.

A wild Mudan appearance!
so what's missing is you need to scale the gear heft with the force on each gear. So the first gear in the set should be small and light and the last gear in the set should be very bulky.
Sorta kinda like bicycle gears

Fun video, I've read a lot of solid advice in the comments. Just wanted to add my 2 pennies. If got a well oiled axel and a counterweight to negate your weight like actual elevators do, you wouldn't have to overcome gravity. Just a little friction.
I still can’t believe you don’t have more subs. As I was writing this, I went and checked, assuming you had something like 500k (still not enough) and was shocked when you only had ~44k. I hope the algorithm randomly shows you to a good chunk of people soon.

7:49 that just cracked me up 😂
Bro. Love this. Keep it up. But you know your blowing up your motors bc you’re pumping them with way too much power lol. 5v at 4amps is definitely over it’s power rating.
oh for sure lol
I have learned the hard way, even brushed dc motors need proper driver, stall current is just too much for either power supply or motor itself to handle.
why didn't you set a current limit???
POWAH!
Same answer to why didn't you use the ladder at the first place...?

The mechanical output power needs to be able to overcome the motor's inertia during rotation, the gearbox mass moment of inertia, and the load's inertia. Yes you did create an elevator that can't handle it's own self for too long. Love it keep it up

As someone who pays for YT Premium and skips every ad on every video ever, I have to comment to say this video’s sponsor is the first ad I’ve seen that honestly looks really helpful and valuable! Your delivery was funny, and the sponsor’s products and coupons actually looked like something I would use. Just wanted you to know how rare that is.
that's pretty sweet to hear. I'll just screencap your comment to show future advertisers lol
That's generally true with maker channels, usually sponsors are actually relevant since, well, the target audience for a maker channel doesn't really coincide with the target audience for your typical sponsor
@@nikkiofthevalley You're right. I've seen it both ways over the years. It's still rare enough that I feel compelled to say something when it's relevant. Obviously some channels don't lend themselves well to "relevant sponsors" (eg True Crime channels 😀), but it's nice to see on maker channels.
