Think having the chance of not being able to wound a character like Sauron would give some interesting tactical choices, where you are forced to sacrifice weaker units to keep him at bay until you can get your stronger units in position to take a shot at him.
See how the Fellowship does vs Durins Bane. When Gandalf said "This foe is beyond any of you" about the Balrog ... Was he right? I think Aragorn Legolas, Gimli and Boromir could take the Balrog. Bonus round for figuring out just how blessed Gandalf was to win the 1v1 after the two fell.
