Lore about the Can Opener bridge: The bridge was originally designed in the 1920s and built in 1940 by the Southern Railway. The Southern Railway existed between 1894 and 1982, when it merged with the Norfolk and Western Railway to form Norfolk Southern. At the end of 1971, the Southern operated 6,026 miles (9,698 km) of railroad, not including its Class I subsidiaries Alabama Great Southern (528 miles or 850 km), Central of Georgia (1,729 miles), Savannah & Atlanta (167 miles), Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific Railway (415 miles), Georgia Southern & Florida (454 miles), and twelve Class II subsidiaries. That year, the Southern itself reported 26,111 million net ton-miles of revenue freight and 110 million passenger-miles. The Southern handed control of its trains to Amtrak in 1979, eight years after Amtrak began operations. Today, Amtrak's Crescent takes its name from the Southern Railway's famed train of the same name. In Durham, the railroad is located near various industrial buildings that at one time hosted tobacco and textile businesses. The bridge allows passenger and freight trains to cross over South Gregson Street in downtown Durham and also functions as the northbound access to the nearby Durham Amtrak station. When the bridge opened, the clearance for vehicles of 11 feet 8 inches was the standard height. As early as the 1960s, several low bridges in Durham were an impediment to the area's industry as larger trucks began supplementing rail haulage. This bridge on Gregson Street in particular experienced at least seven collisions from trucks by 1968, with $20,000 (over $180,900 dollars in 2024) in damages. The state government attempted to fix the problem but was unable to obtain federal funding, so the accepted method of ameliorating the problem at the time was to dig for the road to go deeper, given that the Railway could not afford to rebuild the bridge altogether. However, as years went by, this option would eventually become impractical, as it would require moving sewer lines and water pipes below the road surface, which would come at a high cost and cause important utilities to be shut down for weeks to months. In May 2016, the city attempted to solve the problem by installing a traffic signal at the intersection and removing the yellow warning beacons. As shown here, when an over-height vehicle approaches, the signal cycles to red and a blank-out sign affixed to the signal's mast arm illuminates and flashes the message "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" in white. The signal will eventually turn green even if the over-height vehicle chooses not to turn. The signal's long delay was intended to notify drivers that their vehicles would not fit under the bridge. In October 2019, the North Carolina Railroad Company (a state-owned rail corridor) began work to raise the bridge by 8 inches to improve safety and reduce damage to the span. The bridge was raised to a new height of 12 feet 4 inches (or 3.76 m), the maximum clearance that would not affect the grades of nearby crossings. It was further stated that the grade had to be improved for safety reasons to allow the trains to go faster. But, as this new height is still far lower than the typical bridge clearance, the system of warning signals and the guard barrier remained in place, and as shown, despite the raised height, these collisions still happen. ALL HAIL THE CAN OPENER!
Also, most of the major ones are now rental trucks, so it’s a lot of wholly inexperienced drivers probably forgetting that truck height can actually be an issue, while professional drivers seem to be finally catching on. RIP all those Penske and Enterprise trucks 😢
