Niantic making a daily limit of 50 coins per day from gyms and removing legendaries from research boxes were honestly the worst things they could have ever done
It'd be awesome to have more ways to get legendaries and pokecoins. There are many things that could be implemented if they just listened to their fanbase for 5 minutes. All in All these are just strategies to keep the game pay to win

I still don’t know why they nerfed the amount of coins from gym, probably because they don’t want us to have too much free. I was thinking about it in the car the other day and I’m glad you brought it up
i would rather take easy 50 coins a day then 100 coins completly hardworking coins plus there was always one team superior with training gastly bots nightmare times
It was because back then, people would put their pokemon in out-of-reach gyms so that they could farm coins daily since there wasn't a cap like there is now. You kept getting coins as long as the pokemon remained in the gym receiving 100 coins daily, and they would use powerful pokemon that people couldn't counter (as Mystic said, there was a lot of blissey and that was one of the reasons why) A lot of people abused the system then. Hence why it's now capped at 50 coins and only getting those when your pokemon returned, rather than getting 100 coins a day for defending a gym

It’s not even the chance for a shiny that upset me, it was the lack of those legendaries. I get that they want people out and about, but even then it can be hard to get enough people playing to do the T5 raids, especially for the small town player. Even still plenty of people work during raid hour, so a big change I’d like back is rotating legendaries. As far as the gyms/free poke coins…that needs some kind of rework, such as being able to pull a mon out to collect coins or coin limits need to be changed or rolled over..it doesn’t seem right that a bliss’s that has been in a gym for over 3 weeks is only going to net 0-50 coins.
You get 50 coins each day. So for small town players it’s ass because I’ve left Pokémon in small town gyms for like 3 weeks while I traveled and they’d come back 3 weeks later at a time when I’ve got other Pokémon in gyms and only get the 50 coins. Adversely. In a city or busy town if your Pokémon are constantly getting knocked out you can still earn coins for the day. Overall. You’re right. It needs a rework. Either more coins per day or more ways to earn coins.

If the game means so much to you, then leave your small town for a little bit. I live in a small town in Florida(pop.-1000) and I just ride to one of two big cities around me to play sometimes when I'm not working. I understand if transportation is an issue tho...

I've been playing since day one of Pokemon GO, I really appreciate you for making this video and showing newer players what we had and being so honest about their mistakes. Hopefully Niantic will see this and think about things. Thanks again man
I wish I had played a lot more consistently back when the breakthroughs were that great. I only ever got 2 Articuno and a Suicune since I played so sparingly
Atleast you got them... Now try to get them damn near impossible same with Zapdos and Lugia your lucky asf if you have any of them now along with Rayquaza and zekrom and Darkrai wish they make a return
This is Niantics problem always has been. Their solutions to get people to do more of what they want isn't adding to the game in that area etc it's always to nerf something else good hoping that forces players to do as they please.
Thanks for the awesome video. But you forgot the time when niantic added ALL AVAILABLE STARTERS to level 20+ GBL rewards reducing the probability of getting a legendary pokemon from 10-12.5% to about 4%. Also, when Niantic nerfed the GBL stardust rewards to the ground and to answer the community's backlash they gave extra end-of-season stardust which was nothing compared to what we would have earned throughout the season.
I live in a pretty rural area with just a few pokestops and gyms. Almost all of them were placed by me after i reached level 40. But, when the research breakthrough box had legendaries in it, i was rarely able to open it because i couldn't get my daily spin stamp. There were absolutely ZERO pokestops in my place, so, for me to spin a pokestop, i had to take the bus and go elsewhere. I still remember going INSANE when the first pokestop appeared in the area, and it was about a 4-5 minute walk from home. But soon after that happened the box was nerfed... But being able to get a legendary from it was SO hype, people who didn't experience that really missed out.
I remember those legendary research breakthrough boxes! That was how I got my first ever shiny legendary. Not only was it the first lugia I had EVER gotten, but it was SHINY. I was at my boyfriend’s apartment at the time, completely freaked out when I saw it, and ran to show him. He was so jealous! I will always remember that moment lol.
I really miss the old gym system when it came to training them up to fit all the pokemon on there plus the 100 coins daily but having the 1 Pokémon each instead of 10 of the same was a welcomed change
@@MrZorx75 yeah but I feel it’s still something though because it gives free to play players or atleast ppl who decide to spend as little as possible and extra encounter and chance at a shiny or Hundo. Now they are clearly trying to incentivize raiding. They are just trying to get their bread but an extra free encounter from field research wouldn’t hurt them.
@@MrZorx75 i live in a rural place, the closest gym is 10km away and whenever I get the chance to raid there are only 5 to 4 people in the raid, how am I supposed to get legendaries
I remember sitting for an hour at midnight, taking down a single fully Blissed out gym, only to leave behind a CP27 pidgeot. As much as people hated that system, I was capable of dealing with it solo, albeit slowly. And boy, did it piss off the Valor and Mystic players :D
I remember all of this stuff. People take the new gym system for granted nowadays, but the gym rework was such a massive deal at the time! If any of your pokemon were in gyms when it happened, they all got kicked out simultaneously. Then gyms were inaccessible for several days, but a bunch of new things converted into gyms as well! Also worth noting that before the rework happened, you couldn’t spin the photo disc at gyms for items. Only pokestops had item-giving powers at first, and gym badges didn’t exist either. It was like a totally different experience.
I miss getting 50 pokeballs from my buddy during community Day. They need to bring that back. And for the research breakthrough, I remember getting shiny Moltres one week, and then shiny groudon the very next week
I think a heavy fail is the early gym system where if you battled so hard to beat the gym, the members of that gym could keep feeding unlimited golden razz berries to have full HP or if you defeated a gym and it turned grey, anyone could swipe that gym win
I love watching these old videos lmao Honestly I think Gyms just needed the Winner Priority and all gym slots available. Having to train the gym to unlock the slots was annoying but it was the easiest gold badge. I think 6 pokemon in a gym is a weird number. They could at least made it 8 to match the number of gym badges in the main series. Or left it at 10. They should of also let the first person to put in “Any” pokemon even legendaries/mythical. So they’d be crowned as the Gym leader and get some sort of buff to make their pokemon harder to defeat. Gyms are pretty useless right now. I can easily wipe out any gym with 1 pokemon and if you have friends to help nothing is hard. The pokemon shouldn’t decay and they should have a gym defender buff that makes them feel like a challenge. And once you win gym battles you should get some sort of reward like stardust and xp.
Remember when niantic hard coded the grass type pokemon as a list? When gen 4 was released, evolving a grotle didn't count for the "evolve an evolved grass type pokemon" research task
Just got back into the game. Thank you for being such a big help to me coming back . I finally got my first mewtwo and other things . You gotta keep making this content brotha
Re: Heracross One of the unfortunate mechanics that Niantic seems to have in their code is that the shiny rate is consistent regardless of how you encounter the pokemon (raids, wild, etc.). For Heracross, they put it in raids and removed it from the wild, and gave us a boosted shiny rate. After the backlash of people complaining, Niantic left Corsola in the wild when it's shiny was released but gave us the base shiny rate, and people complained that it was too hard to raid for the shiny.
Buddy functionality idea: What if for a certain amount of Km walked with a buddy, the trainer were given the ability to improve the buddy’s IVs by 1? And let’s say the Km needed were based on the rarity of the Pokémon and would multiply by 1.2x each IV gained. For example, based on the eggs the Pokémon hatch from, or the level raid needed for the reward encounter, would determine if you needed 20 (tier1), 30 (tier3), 40 (tier4) or 50Km (tier5) walked for a single IV improvement. If a trainer had a 10/15/15 IV Charmander, they would need to walk 148.832km (round to 149) with the buddy Pokémon to get to 100% IVs. If a trainer had a 10/15/15 IV Gible, they would need to walk 297.664km (round to 298) with the buddy Pokémon to get to 100% IVs. If a trainer had a 10/15/15 IV Mewtwo, they would need to walk 446.496km (round to 447) with the buddy Pokémon to get to 100% IVs. Pros: - This would make spoofing or radar services less profitable and encourages more gameplay with the same Pokémon. - Entices player to “bond” with a single Pokémon for longer and therefore play the game more often to get the coveted 100% dex. Cons: - All players would have access to the best Pokémon if they walk enough - Pvp players would need to make sure to avoid gaining hearts walking their buddy, or not apply the “bonding” IVs earned. If you can think of any other pros/cons, reply to this comment so we can share our thoughts about the idea and maybe someone at Niantic will pick it up! Ideas welcomed and I’ll update the post accordingly. Side note: Could it be this is why Ash Ketchum’s Pikachu was so powerful? Because Ash built a string relationship with him? Second side note: friend me so we can help each other to lvl50! 6436 8135 6368
Those freaking gyms, man... ok, so I'm team Instinct (smallest team) and I wasn't getting all the good mons for attacking or defending gyms, which meant that all the gyms around me were chock full of defenders from other teams. I could never make a dent in them, and if I was lucky enough to get a mon into a gym, I'd be knocked out twenty minutes later. The entire non-pay method of getting Pokecoins was cut off from me. I much prefer this version of gyms.
I'm also Team Instinct and I remember doing constant trips with my bike into the forrest or mountain areas to take down gyms which were pretty hard to reach. I managed to get my 100 coins almost every day. Tbh it was the most fun I ever had with the game. Right now I can just do everything while sitting on my couch...
Personally I believe they should have never added legendarys to boxes or raids to begin with, they should have been released in the wild but made absolutely stupidly difficult to find, it makes it more fun and a reason to always go out and hunt and not get bored
Problem is many people (like me) started playing during Covid and didn't realize that was not how the game usually was. They weren't bonuses to us, they were just the game. The rollbacks still don't make sense to me. Ya, I know, "Niantic's vision." Can you imagine if Microsoft decided their system had to many features and was to easy for people to use, so they went back to Windows 95? Laughable right? :)
Honestly I liked the old way gyms worked because it became a turf war type of thing. Me and friends would hold down a market plaza that had 4 gyms in it and it was pretty much impossible to overtake by a single person, which incentivized WORKING TOGETHER to take down a gym. You had to fight through an entire gym all at once and beat the timer, it was tough! Now, any chud with a 500+ cp mon can take down any gym with enough revives and potions, plus you're incentivized to LOSE rather than actually defend anything, really sad honestly...
There is one more that I would love to see come back. Back in the old gym system there also was AR battling and it was great making the game so much more real and exciting to me.
I had a white screen glitch after a raid since my party died at the same time the raid boss did. I lost a free raid pass and a chance at a groudon, but I was given 3 premium raid passes for compensation.
Remember shiny Snivy’s release… A non-Community Day release (it did get a CD eventually, but was pretty ridiculous it had it’s shiny release be a non-CD. The only starter they’ve done that for
I was expecting the first Go Fest as one of these. Definitely expected the hearusniantic mess. You probably need to add good Com Day Schedules to this list. Starter/pseudo legendary was great.
If remote passes and premium passes both cost 100 coins. Why can’t we use premium passes as remote passes and why can’t we hold as many remote passes as we like?? Also bring back the old boxes that have 15 passes, 15 incubators and a few other things for 1480 coins!!!!!!!
You should have also mentioned the raise in remote raid pass prices because regardless of what pokemon go does we are stupid enough to keep playing the game regardless of price and it will be long forgotten soon that the prices was 250 for 3 passes instead of 300
That and them not doing the remote raid passses in the 1 coin boxes anymore. My discord group is still pissed about that and some I think have stopped playing altogether because remotes are pretty much the only way they can do raids
The best feature of the game up to this date was trying to find the Pokemon by walking around and getting step counts deppending if you were close or not... It was the most fun feature, they removed it and made them all to appear on pokestops instead, i dunno how u didnt mention this one x)
That does sound awful but Niantic always finds a way to waste your time with eggs. The number of Vullaby and Scraggy I've hatched trying to find a female Salandit, my god.
I did take down 10 Blissys once or twice. I remember the hard work I did to get 100 coins a day so I could purchase Lucky Eggs for double XP on evolving, the best way to get XP at the time. I made Level 40 just before the first anniversary, just before they changed the gym system. I was ready to never do another gym battle. Then the change came, and even though the maximum coins were now half, it drew me back in to doing gym battles. Getting a coin every ten minutes is a lot easier than making sure one was live in ten gyms at midnight, which was when they gave the coins out under the old system. Though I get less coins per day than I use to, and I do not like it, I would not be surprised if they have given out more coins per day since then because more people are able to get coins. Also, it made the relationships between the three teams easier, since you now needed them to get your coins. As a whole, it is much better. I still think people who made Level 40 in the first year should get a medal for it; it was harder then. These days, I use the coins more for incubators and raid passes, in that order.
8:45 I still think I am a winner for NOT buying this ticket, the biggest flob is I purchase this year's GO Fest ticket but I still have fun with it at least
I had to remind the first 2 seconds of the video like 20 times😂”On July 6 of 2020, Pokémon Go was released” it’s okay, we all know what you meant Mystic
I liked the original gym style I wish it would go back to it even if they kept it a max of 50 coins a day, atleast back then you could collect the coins instead of waiting up to 3 days before a pokemon gets kicked out
Mark my words The way mega energy and xl candy were initially put in the game will be looked back as one of the most boneheaded decisions niantic has ever made.
Now I really regret not getting GO sooner. The only way to get the legendary birds now is to beat Giovanni. In other words, there is no way for me to get a legendary bird.
one of my favourites was the no limit and huge quantities on the gifts on release, me and my local group absolutely hammered eachother with gifts the first few hours and it was great. My girlfriend had hundreds of pinaps and pokeballs that lasted her months haha it somewhat worked out for niantic from her since she ended up buying like 5 bag upgrades to store them all
Amazing video, Brandon! As an OG day 1 player, the old gym system still gives me nightmares 😂 And maybe, just maybe, it could be a part two of this video...
Thank you for making this video! I have returned to Pokémon GO like 2 months ago or so and I've been playing every day since. Although this game brings me so much joy and has gotten me kinda addicted again, I just cannot stop complaining about the things Niantic has taken away from us. Taking away content that players have gotten used to (Legendaries in research breakthroughs, 1 Pokécoin box containing a remote raid pass, 2 free raids a day during Season of Alola and much more) is a really frustrating approach and I just don't understand why Niantic is punishing players that don't wanna play the GBL like they are currently doing. It is natural for a game developer to push new features to try and make them more popular, but you don't have to take away from other content to artificially boost your new system in my opinion. I think that soon, Niantic has to reconsider their approach and goals for Pokémon Go, as they currently don't seem to match with what the playerbase expects/wants. In a way I even feel like the Pokémon Go community deservers a better company running the game, as there are still so many players that have been loyal to the game for such a long time but still end up getting completely ripped off by Niantic in some cases (Go Fest 2022, Mr. Crime event). Has Niantic even addressed the issues of GO Fest 2022 yet? You can't even tell because their communication is horribe as well....
I still remember their first glitch that they didn't inform players till after it was resolved: the catch rate was lowered and the flee rate was increased to 70% I also remember the first Moltres raid day that had problems everywhere and niantic said it was because "we" had bad 4G connections, you know despite you guys having video evidence in Japan
I’m so glad I only spent around 5 passes for Druddigon when it first released. We have a local dude who raided stupid hard and did over 30 in the first 4 hours when it was shiny locked. It’s crazy that whenever there is a mistake like this, it’s shoved under the rug and radio silence from Niantic with no compensation. Just like Go fest 2022 and the dissapering spawns…
The pokécoin switch thing may have been clever because it definitely caused me to make a new character of a different gym color. First thing I did was bought and threw a lucky egg, star piece, incense, and lure modules. You wanna talk about XP boost with all of those new types...
Remember how niantic tried to shake things up with coin system by implementing tasks to get coins? Gyms wouldn't be the only coin outcome, which for many rural people would be a godsend. But many weren't happy with the fact that one of the tasks was "win a raid", which was pretty harsh. When niantic removed that task... Few weeks later they cancelled this system without explanation. Gee, I wonder what change made them realise it wasn't worth financially...
Got take issue with you drawing the line at double-legacy Lapras... that was and still would be an exceptional/welcome research breakthrough. Woobat was the death of the research breakthroughs
Niantic making a daily limit of 50 coins per day from gyms and removing legendaries from research boxes were honestly the worst things they could have ever done

Yes 2016…. Man it just makes me almost tear up cuz those were truly unmatched days. That era was too iconic.
My first shiny was Latios from a research box. I miss when research boxes were actually worth it :/
Same Here it Was my first legendary and shiny the first time i thought IT was normal for them to be shiny in the Research xD
Same but latias for me
@@jamiehaug3318 same, I only found out otherwise when my next one wasn't shiny
Same but moltres and zapdos
10:26 Never say never! You want Melmetal with an exclusive move? Pay us.
The other big thing I would include is releasing new shinies exclusively in raids with base rate odds. Happened with Rufflet, Corsola, and Snorlax
I really miss the old gym system when it came to training them up to fit all the pokemon on there plus the 100 coins daily but having the 1 Pokémon each instead of 10 of the same was a welcomed change
I never got to play during the amazing days of the legendary breakthrough boxes, but i wish niantic brought them back. 😢😢😢
same here that would be really cool
To be fair, they weren’t super exciting, like once a week isn’t much.
@@smmsmiley2125 I mean, if you don’t like raiding gbl is an okay way to get legendaries too but yeah
Unpopular opinion: Taking down Blissey gyms with Machamp and alike then putting a cp10 pidgey in to defend was absolute bliss!
I love watching these old videos lmao
Honestly I think Gyms just needed the Winner Priority and all gym slots available.
And once you win gym battles you should get some sort of reward like stardust and xp.
just got my first shiny mewtwo, i'm so hype 🤩
Remember when niantic hard coded the grass type pokemon as a list? When gen 4 was released, evolving a grotle didn't count for the "evolve an evolved grass type pokemon" research task
Just got back into the game. Thank you for being such a big help to me coming back . I finally got my first mewtwo and other things . You gotta keep making this content brotha
Re: Heracross
One of the unfortunate mechanics that Niantic seems to have in their code is that the shiny rate is consistent regardless of how you encounter the pokemon (raids, wild, etc.). For Heracross, they put it in raids and removed it from the wild, and gave us a boosted shiny rate. After the backlash of people complaining, Niantic left Corsola in the wild when it's shiny was released but gave us the base shiny rate, and people complained that it was too hard to raid for the shiny.
Buddy functionality idea:
What if for a certain amount of Km walked with a buddy, the trainer were given the ability to improve the buddy’s IVs by 1?
Pros:
- This would make spoofing or radar services less profitable and encourages more gameplay with the same Pokémon.
- Entices player to “bond” with a single Pokémon for longer and therefore play the game more often to get the coveted 100% dex.
Cons:
- All players would have access to the best Pokémon if they walk enough
- Pvp players would need to make sure to avoid gaining hearts walking their buddy, or not apply the “bonding” IVs earned.
If you can think of any other pros/cons, reply to this comment so we can share our thoughts about the idea and maybe someone at Niantic will pick it up! Ideas welcomed and I’ll update the post accordingly.
Side note:
Could it be this is why Ash Ketchum’s Pikachu was so powerful? Because Ash built a string relationship with him?
Second side note: friend me so we can help each other to lvl50!

I love this type of content you’ve been putting out! Keep up the good work!
I miss the legendaries being in research rewards the most
Honestly I liked the old way gyms worked because it became a turf war type of thing.
I got a 96% shiny kyogre from the research box back in the day😭 good times.
I think one that only the og players will remember is eevee in 10k eggs it just felt like a waist of walking
That does sound awful but Niantic always finds a way to waste your time with eggs. The number of Vullaby and Scraggy I've hatched trying to find a female Salandit, my god.
@@bigbearkat2010 at least vullaby can be shiny
8:45 I still think I am a winner for NOT buying this ticket, the biggest flob is I purchase this year's GO Fest ticket but I still have fun with it at least
lol i actually thought the pokemon is called mr crime
@@mitzki1214 to top it off, I go plus a hundo of Mr. Crime during GO Fest

They just did it again with keldeo
I had to remind the first 2 seconds of the video like 20 times😂”On July 6 of 2020, Pokémon Go was released” it’s okay, we all know what you meant Mystic
I REALLY miss the good research breaktrough boxes
I remember one time getting moltress one time and then I left the game and when I came back I was surprised at how bad the breakthroughs were
Gigas was paywall locked before mr crime! Haha
Damn I thought Pokémon go was released in 2016 not 2020.
He made a mistake
@@maxsisto7906 I know. It’s a joke
Been searching for this comment for the whole video
I liked the original gym style I wish it would go back to it even if they kept it a max of 50 coins a day, atleast back then you could collect the coins instead of waiting up to 3 days before a pokemon gets kicked out
Got some shines today 🙂🙂
I remember getting my first legendary, Latias from the research box, and probably other legendaries. I loved getting it.
In a year Niantic better regret getting rid of our free remote passes
why would they? Whales still buy remote raid passes for money
I'm suprised he didn't bring it up.
The thing is they have taken legendary Pokémon out of the gbl now aswell
Mark my words
The way mega energy and xl candy were initially put in the game will be looked back as one of the most boneheaded decisions niantic has ever made.
When shadow zapdos was released in raids, they forgot to release the shiny
Now I really regret not getting GO sooner. The only way to get the legendary birds now is to beat Giovanni. In other words, there is no way for me to get a legendary bird.
Well, this comment aged like milk.
Wow I never knew about a lot of these, this new style of vids have been BANGERS
I have a raikou, moltres, kyoger, and 2 articuno from those boxes. I’m mad they changed cause now they don’t feel as rewarding.
Mr. Crime lmao!!!! Good video well done!
Wait Pokémon Go was released in 2020?? What was I playing in 2016???
one of my favourites was the no limit and huge quantities on the gifts on release, me and my local group absolutely hammered eachother with gifts the first few hours and it was great. My girlfriend had hundreds of pinaps and pokeballs that lasted her months haha it somewhat worked out for niantic from her since she ended up buying like 5 bag upgrades to store them all
These new informational style type of videos are really nice, the vibe is good
I'm glad you addressed the research box - I thought Ijke hallucinated the old, cool pokemon. And yes nerfing the gym coins was AWFUL.
An awesome type of video! Completely new Brandon :D
Weird I can swear I remember playing pokemon go in 2016
Same
I remember seeing 10 blissys in a gym in a row, IT WAS CrAzY
July 6 2020? I think you might be 4 years out with that one :D
Amazing video, Brandon! As an OG day 1 player, the old gym system still gives me nightmares 😂
And maybe, just maybe, it could be a part two of this video...
0:01 I don't think it was made in 2020💀💀
I paid for the Mr. Mime thing, got a refund, got the quest anyway so got it for free.
My only moltres is a shiny and it was form the research breakthrough
I miss the 10 blissey gym days...
Imagine if oh go released with trading battling a d friends list. They literally had it in the trailer
You forgot the fast catch trick
Great research & memory. Thx for reminding us
Thank you for making this video!
You can't even tell because their communication is horribe as well....
liking the content mystic, love the direction you’re heading in
I still remember their first glitch that they didn't inform players till after it was resolved: the catch rate was lowered and the flee rate was increased to 70%
I also remember the first Moltres raid day that had problems everywhere and niantic said it was because "we" had bad 4G connections, you know despite you guys having video evidence in Japan
This a really fun video for me after only playing for a month XD, cheers
This was one of the best vids and most fun vids you’ve done in a long time. Do more countdown videos like this. 😂👍
They're doing mr crime again with keldeo
I’m so glad I only spent around 5 passes for Druddigon when it first released. We have a local dude who raided stupid hard and did over 30 in the first 4 hours when it was shiny locked.
It’s crazy that whenever there is a mistake like this, it’s shoved under the rug and radio silence from Niantic with no compensation. Just like Go fest 2022 and the dissapering spawns…
On July 6th 2020 pokemon was released? Did I get some beta in 2016?
I got a shiny and a hundo kyogre from the breakthrough box!!
if you got a moltress from the first ever box it’ll say “Obtained: UNOWN” useless fact but cool one. that they just, ignore the boxes.
i still remember how hyped i was when i got a shiny zapdos out of a breakthrough box
Your best video yet. Keep calling out niantic! The community deserves it and niantic needs to hear it.
Bro the classic loading screen at the start brought back so much nostalgic
Got take issue with you drawing the line at double-legacy Lapras... that was and still would be an exceptional/welcome research breakthrough. Woobat was the death of the research breakthroughs
I love your videos man, I no longer get bored on UA-cam Haha huge fan man thank you
