It is possible but they will questions you about why you were on the student visa. I would highly suggest you do not apply for the protection visa or if you really want to that you consult a migration agent first, we see so many apply for the protection visa ruin their future and ability to stay in Australia. It is one of the most difficult visas to get granted in Australia and most likely you will be refused which will lead to you either having to spend a lot of money on an appeal and you will be left without options to work and most likely will have to leave the country in the end. Also you should be aware even if you are granted a protection visa you will not be able to ever return to your home country or your visa will be cancelled.
