Instead of importing duty-free cooking oil, why not remove all taxes from locally manufactured cooking oil? This way we can avoid job losses and grow our local industry. Kuria and his cronies only want to benefit on a personal level. Very sad.😢
Is the locally manufactured oil able to satisfy the market? 100% not, so then, do we have local oil costing 300 & imported 600. What do you think the businessmen will do? Price is about supply and demand. To reduce the price, have the commodity availability higher than the demand. That's what the government is trying to do!
@@georgeodhiambo598 . You really don't know what you're talking about. Why don't we import tea but we import cooking oil? If the maize we produce cannot satisfy the demand, what makes you think oil will? You people twisting facts to fit your narrative. Amazing!

There is a reason why it is called a "Bill". That is a legal term, not a financial concept. Using both Finance and Bill means that you need input from both experts. Whatever financial technicalities are created must meet the legal requirements. It is the lawyers who will advise, defend or challenge the legality of the Bill. In other words, the creation of a Finance Bill is not the exclusive responsibility of the Financial experts; it involves other stakeholders who have no financial skills, like the citizens and the lawyers being part of it to ensure that the proposed law will be constitutional and not have legal loopholes that will exploit the stakeholders. That is the raison d'être why it cannot be left only to the financial and economic experts. An exclusive right is granted to them only when it doesn't affect people outside the realm of Finance as a profession. On the contrary, this process is a constitutional provision, and even boda boda riders can analyse and question the taxes that will affect their business.
The Kenya Kwanza aims at enlarging the tax base to increase total tax collected. In other words, this govt wants to increase the number of 'cows milked' to increase the milk supply. If ALL Kenyans- formal employees, private single member businesses, land lords, boda bodas etc- paid their due taxes, and the government was responsible, Kenya would be at a higher level of economic well being.
Of course you are wrong and you know it! Even the most obnoxious tax that Ruto has introduced, ie the additional 8% VAT of fuel products, does not involve expanding the tax base. It involves trying to get more milk from the same cow. Willis Otieno is perfectly right.

Why are you struggling so hard to sound stupid? Willis stated from the onset, and rightly so that Kenyans are not resisting paying taxes. It is the steep rise in taxation that is being challenged. And Willis Otieno has explained it well with his analogy. I may also add that when taxation rate is applied beyond the reach of people, then consumption and employment rate goes down leading to lower tax revenues.

Yes local supply is able to match the local market needs. But on the flip side, why import duty-free what can be produced locally

Employees have been paying PAYE 30% taxes, NHIF2.75%,NSSF 2.7% religiously. Additional taxes on the same employee is what is punitive
