This is the first time I've ever clicked on the link to go to the full album. That's how good an album this is in my book! You're going to love the rest of this I'm going to listen to the first song so far but I believe you're going to be hooked after this you'll probably have to go to the next album which is 52nd Street. Peace!

You should do more of his albums. I would suggest 52nd Street next. The Stranger was his first with producer Phil Ramone, and they had a long business relationship. BJ is a very eclectic artist with no one signature sound or style. One of my favorite artists.

  • @wpollock1
    @wpollock1 9 місяців тому +5

I love how BJ changes his vocal approach depending on the subject matter. This is even more evident in the next album, 52nd Street, where he takes on various roles (ie a Cuban band member etc). Not to diminish his work here….Vienna and Scenes are my favorites- I have heard Just the Way You Are too many times. Fantastic review….you are top tier, providing some very insightful comments.

The Stranger is a classic album that mostly is unaffected by the tides of times. Scenes and Vienna grow on you too. Godfather II is it for me.

Hi JP. DP from UK. This album just shines through, and gives me a warm glow, Like The Sun. So many timeless classics on it, my favourites being Just The Way You Are and She's Always A Woman. On Mafia movies, not a big fan, but the original Godfather film takes some beating.
P.S. my song ref Like The Sun is by Judie Tzuke.

While not everybody's cup of tea, there's no denying that Billy Joel can write a hit with the best of them. This album, while not my favorite (I prefer "The Nylon Curtain," "Turnstiles" and "Streetlife Serenader") is packed with hits.
I've got a few suggestions for "Long Song Saturdays"... These albums should be listened to fully to get the impact. They're all just amazing albums that you'll want to return to time and again.
ELTON JOHN - Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy" - IMO the BEST Elton John album. At the absolute height of his popularity (cover of TIME magazine, playing in massive venues) he drops this brilliant autobiography (along with Bernie Taupin) that tells the story, so far. It's an amazing album where it kicks off with a bang in the title track... but doesn't let up through the incredible last song, "Curtains."
GRANDADDY - The Sophtware Slump - Grandaddy's second album is an incredible journey through Crystal Lakes and electronic wastelands... Think Neil Young fronting Radiohead.
THE DELGADOS - Universal Audio - How to follow up two amazing albums of sonic brilliance (helped out by the massive production of Dave Friddman of Flaming Lips' fame) Scotland's best went shorter pop songs with more hands-on production... and it doesn't sound any less incredible. The amazing songs carry the day and this was absolutely sterling way to end their amazing career. An album I turn to again and again with undeniable riffs, awe-inspiring production, and fascinating lyrical content. Both of their leaders Alan and Emma take turns singing their own songs and it works brilliantly... again and again. They were everything "Modern Rock" could ever hope for.

This is the album that made Billy a superstar. He was known more locally on the east coast especially the New York area until the release of this legendary album with the exception of perhaps one song all these songs were at least memorable if not great. Just The Way You Are was a huge hit. Vienna, Movin’ Out, She’s Always a Woman, and particularly Scenes From An Italian Restaurant are unforgettable tunes. In fact this last tune has become one of the all time favorites of Billy Joel fans! The Godfather is my favorite mafia movie with Goodfellas being next best.Vienna was about Billy’s father who left Billy when he was very little and sent back to Austria to become a relatively famous concert pianist in Europe.

I can sort of see how someone can possibly never heard of this album and these songs. The most amazing thing is that if all the songs here, the only one that J.P recognized before the listen was Vienna. So many insanely popular and catchy songs and that is the one he's heard. Don't get me wrong it is great too.
You are so lucky Justin to be able to listen to these great songs in the album format. Most of us heard them as they were fed to us on the radio. One single at a time or if we were lucky, some of the album tracks on an FM station.
    Keep up the great work.

I'm humbled to receive a shout-out! It's really worth getting to know more Billy Joel, and I don't think there's any better complete album experience for the beginner than The Stranger.
He's always been on the soundtrack of my life since I was little, and I've had the privilege to see him live at GM Place in Vancouver in 2007.

When you remark how Billy Joel's music fit the tone and mood of his lyrics, you should know that Joel almost always wrote the music first, then wrote lyrics. As clever as he was writing lyrics, Billy Joel spoke first through his music, and I say that as someone who grew up with his music: I was 11 when The Stranger was released, I didn't yet have a record player, so I spent my last waking moments every night twirling the knob of my AM-radio so I could fall asleep listening to Joel sing the rhythmic lullaby of my youth, "She's Always a Woman to Me."

Road to Perdition. You can't pick a better Billy Joel album as an introduction. It is a classic. Classic Rock radio used to play the first 7 songs on this album quite regularly. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is my favorite.

Always warm feelings about this album. Part of its charm is it's the second of three albums Billy recorded at Columbia Recording Studios in New York, previously used by Simon & Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, Elton John (11-7-70), and Paul McCartney recorded some orchestra for his Ram album there.

After Uptown Girl, Vienna is the second most listened to Billy Joel song on Spotify. It wasn't always like that. I think Ariana Grande may have covered it? I just love how that song flows, and the meaning is a bit ambiguous. The perfect song. And Italian Restaurant is about as close as Billy Joel gets to prog - he paints such a vivid, nostalgic picture. An album for the ages...

A very well put together album, and he is a great songwriter. The thing I noticed most was how he used different singing styles on different songs.

I am glad that you enjoyed the album. If you have a chance to see him in concert, it is worth it. Many of these songs are played during his set. I saw him last February and it was a great show. He is also having some dates with Stevie Nicks and others.
This was his big break out album although his earlier work is quick good as well such and "Cold Spring Harbor" and "Piano Man". Other great Billy Joel albums would be "52nd street", "Glass Houses" and "An Innocent Man". I am sure that you know many of the hits from that era. The album "The Nylon Curtain" was written as he was recovering after a motorcycle accident and when he wasn't sure if he would be able to play piano again. Glad he recovered.
