The multiple HST chart is such a helpful idea. I might suggest using/recommending a wooden tool called a clapper for flattening our seams. Starch is also useful for stabilizing those bias angles.
Thank you for the chart! I love how you explain these concepts so I can understand them. I am a beginner quilter who has sewn other things for decades and this is so different. I love it! ❤
Thank you so much for this tutorial. You are a great teacher. I've printed your HST cheat sheet and will use that from now on when I make half square triangles. Happy thoughts :)
If you wanted to use the 4 square method for some reason, couldn't you just cut the fabric on bias to avoid the problem with stretchy seams? I'm new to quilting and still trying to get my head around all the aspects one needs to consider. So thank you for this tutorial, it's been a real eye opener for me.👏❤️😊
Ya know, I’ve never thought of that. I would try it out and see how it works! I honestly never use the four at a time method. I do 2 or 8 at a time 👏🏻🤓
Thank you so much for the chart. Not keen on doing this sort of maths 😂. Is it the same for the 8 hst as the 2 hst for the stretch (bias) in the fabric. Stretching of the hst’s. New to quilting. Just getting used to the terminology of things. Thanking you again from cloudy UK 😊 x
You're very welcome! And no, the 2 at a time and 8 at a time will not have the same bias stretch as the 4 at a time method. If I just need a few HSTs I do the 2 at a time, and if I need a whole bunch, I do the 8 at a time. I rarely do the 4 at a time because they're a little more tricky to work with because of the stretch. I hope that helps!
Thank you for this ! I have a question… when you mark a line down the center of the 5” square, you say to sew on either side of the line. But you sewed on both sides of the line. Just a little confused. Did you mean to …. Stitch a quarter inch line on both sides of the pen mark ?
Ha! I can see how that would sounds confusing! Yes, you sew 1/4” away from that center line on both sides of the line like how I demonstrated in the video.
Thank you for this great halfsquare triangle tutorial and the pdf. Super helpful! If I want to use the 8 at a time method to make star point squares of, say, 2" finished size, do I have to cut my centre square at 4 and a half inches? 🤔 (I'm new to quilting and maths is not my strong point 😂) Thanks❤
So the half square triangles you will be using will be 2" finished? I think I'm understanding that correctly. Yes, your center square would then need to be 4 1/2"! You've got this!
Sorry the music is distracting for you, Rochelle! I’ll make a note for future videos. If you still want the info, you can go to the link in the description box where you can find my blog post all about the HST math. Thank you for the feedback! 💖
Your technique is excellent, and your video is great. But I noticed when you finished your 2 x HST, after trimming it, you called it an 'unfinished' HST. Oops. Just add a oomment to the video. Also, because you are speaking instructions throughout, I would eliminate the music - it's distracting to me anyway. Don't take my criticizms too seriously - they are minor, and I'm just a perfectionist, and I haven't even watched the whole thing yet!! Thanks so much for the chart!!!
Yes, typically a block is called “unfinished” until it is actually sewn into the quilt, then it is called “finished.” This was definitely one of my older videos and I hope my music selections and use of music is better now! 😂💖 thank you for comments! I really do appreciate it and want my videos to be enjoyable for everyone!
I love how you show and explain everything in full detail. I haven’t been watching you long but I’ve learned so much in that short time. Thank you
I’m so glad!!!💖👏🏻 thank you for watching!!

Thank you for the chart, and the walkthrough. I’m very visual so the more I see it done the more I can remember.
Of course! I’m glad it was helpful 💖
Massive thanks Miriam! I’d never have figured out how to do this. All downloaded and I’m ready to go! ❤
