    So, many people have called me out for not understanding the intended message of "Brother Bear", I do agree that I misinterpreted and exaggerated the whole "humans are evil" idea, when the true lessons were compassion & perspective. This was a different time for me as a reviewer, when I let my anger get the best of my judgement. I would be so wrapped up in justifying a worst choice, that I'd go to extra lengths to defend my picks, and I do apologise for that greatly.
    However, I still think that "Brother Bear" can be preachy, it didn't need to have a scene where Kenai was staring at a cave painting of a human with a spear, while Koda said "Those people are really scary", that's overdoing the lesson of perspective. We already have enough scenes of Kenai experiencing human attacks first hand, that was all that was needed to teach him what it's like for bears to be hunted down, the cave painting scene drives this point too far.
    I will review Brother Bear in it's own stand alone video one day, to give it a better chance, because many of you have made some observations that I missed, and I'm sorry again for letting my anger replace my better reason. In the 2 years since I made this video, I've been aiming to grow and mature as a reviewer, so I can avoid mistakes like this again.

      I can understand but Brother Bear is still one of my lesser favourite Disney films. If only the middle was as good as the beginning and end then it could have been phenomenal.
      Here are my favourite Disney films.
      Fantasia
      Pinocchio
      Alice In Wonderland
      101 Dalmatians
      Mary Poppins
      Robin Hood
      The Rescuers
      The Fox and the Hound
      The Great Mouse Detective
      The Rescuers Down Under
      Beauty and the Beast
      Aladdin
      The Lion King
      The Hunchback of Notre Dame
      The Emperor's New Groove
      Lilo and Stitch
      Wreck It Ralph
      Big Hero 6
      Zootopia (Zootropolis)
      As for my least favourites
      Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
      The Wartime Era films
      Peter Pan
      The Aristocats
      The Black Cauldron
      Pocahontas
      Brother Bear
      Home On The Range

      Hey Jambareeqi! What did you think of it's sequel and 101 Dalmations 2: Patch's London Adventure? I didn't care for Brother Bear 2, finding it to be a cookie-cutter romance story, but I loved 101D2, for it's charming story, loveable characters, hilarious comedy, and gorgeous animation!

    Brother Bear's message isn't humans are evil at all. It's message is saying both humans and Bears have misunderstandings. They even mention in the musical number Great Spirits "we are all the same"!

    • @Jambareeqi
      @Jambareeqi  7 років тому +33

      That's one of the messages for sure, but the film does also keep hammering in "Humans are scary" quite frequently, just so Kenai can look guilty, it felt really on the nose. Heck, most of the journey feels like a series of preachy guilt trips for Kenai.

    • @iisajudge5671

    • @annemeikerutter6613
      @annemeikerutter6613 5 років тому +39

      Jambareeqi Gotta agree with Harry here. I never really got any humans are evil vibes from the message. It’s about Kenai deliberately going against his totem by performing a needless act out of pure hatred and having to be set on the right path. The spirits change him into a bear to force him to change his perspective, and that’s what the cave painting scene demonstrates. Kenai saw a painting of a bear attacking a man, but realized Koda saw the opposite. I think it’s at that moment Kenai started to realize the bear who killed Sitka night it have been the ruthless beast like he made it out to be in his mind, which turns out to be the case when Koda tells the story of how he got separated from his mom. The main messages I got were that you have to look through the eyes of others and aside from that, not let rage and hatred consume you, like Kenai did and then Denahi.
      I personally think this movie is criminally underrated but in the end we all differ in opinion. I can’t say mine is exactly a popular one |’D

    • @RamsTheNameCom
      @RamsTheNameCom 5 років тому +5

      @@AnaCarokart .....Fun Fact: According to the creator and director of "Brother Bear" Aaron Blaise, he said briefly in a livestream on his youtube channel that "Brother Bear" was symbolically about 9/11 since he couldn't make an actual 9/11 based animated film as he wanted (plus he's more entwined with nature paintings over city landscapes). The Bears were the Muslims and the Native American Hunters were the Americans who wish to seek revenge on the Muslims who killed their families.
      "Brother Bear" still doesn't work in this aspect since the film makes it clear that the Bears haven't done anything to the Native Americans. Because at the end of the film they show it was all just a misunderstanding where they have the mother bear in a flashback reenacting the situation from her perspective.
      He would have had to explain at the start of the film that the Native Americans had tales of their friends being killed by man-eating bears who tore them apart. Which would help explain why not all bears are bad, but some were which gave humans a reason to fear them.
      But then again that would undermine the whole "Bear is the symbol for love" concept in the Native Tribe, so this film is just at a lost with it's message.

    I never understood the hate around Brother Bear. I love this film... Well, I really like it at least. It's one of the few Disney films without a bad guy, the scenery is beautiful, the characters are likeable (I even like the two moose). Oh well...
    Lost potential? Tell me about it, that's Atlantis to me: there is a very great film inside there, if only they gave it more time to expand its universe, breathe and appreciate the lost civilisation. I still like it but Atlantis was overall too fast.
    Aaaaaand Chicken Little is only at number 3... Oh boy, what terrifyingly bad movie awaits ahead?

    There is a terrible Hunchback of Notre Dame fan fiction called "Back to the Frollo" where an African-American woman (based on the writer) goes back in time to medieval Paris and falls in love with Frollo (for no reason). Oh and apparently, Frollo is a good guy and Esmeralda is evil. There are sex scenes between the main character and Frollo and shes brags on ENDLESSLY about how sexy Frollo is.
    At one point in the story, she tells Frollo about "the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus", even though he was Italian. Did I mention that the author is a Geography teacher?

    The darkness of Black Cauldron made more sense in its original book form, and the darkness of the original novel came from the fact that it was based on Welsh myths and legends. The Chronicles of Prydain, the original book series, is famous for its character development, so it would be nice if Disney remade the film so it would be closer to the original books.

    Awesome review Jambareeqi!
    I'm REALLY surprised about Brother Bear :O I see your points on what's wrong with it but every time I watch it, I can't help but laugh along because believe it or not, Koda is actually my favorite character of the film. Fun And Fancy Free I can kind of agree with. To this day, I have a hard time sitting through it with a straight face. Granted, it's a slap of nostalgia in the face from my childhood but I understand your points on it. When it first came out, I was interested in Chicken Little. But....due to all the harshness, particularly with all the bully scenes, in a way it hits me hard as I was a victim of bullying when I was in school. So it's kind of hard to sit through those painful scenes for me personally. I totally get where you're going with The Black Cauldron. Not a lot of people are into that movie. I understand that it might be a little boring to some nowadays but as for me, I still get a kick out of it at times since I actually like Gurgi and the only good thing about the film was The Horned King. Now.....Home On The Range I can TOTALLY understand with. There are a TON of people I know that absolutely hate this movie! I like it maybe about 90% less than I did when I was a kid. My problem with it was Grace cause I can't stand her character! Slim was the only thing I really cared for about that whole movie
    Now for the good ones. THOND I 100% agree with. I had it on VHS but never saw it as a kid. But 2 yrs. ago when I finally got my own DVD copy and saw the whole thing from start to finish, I LOVE it to pieces! What can I say about Lilo and Stitch? Loved it as a kid, love it to this day. Lilo basically describes me in a nutshell XP. I've never seen Big Hero 6 so I can't say anything about that. I need a little more time with Fantasia. As a kid I only wanted to watch one short, The Sorcerer's Apprentice. But now glimpsing at some of the other shorts, I might think about buying my own copy and appreciating it a little more. Rescuers Down Under I only saw a little bit of and vaguely remember anything about it. I REALLY need to see this one day!

      Have you seen the 75th anniversary edition, with a newly recorded soundtrack that, unlike the last attempt, is perfectly in synch with the visuals? It's stunning! I saw it at the Castro Theater in San Francisco while on vacation, and it sounded like there was a live orchestra behind the screen.
      For reasons I can't begin to understand, I've never seen either a Blu-ray (preferably offering an unedited version of the film as well) or a soundtrack recording of this edition for sale. For once, I want Disney to take my money (not ALL my money, please!), and they don't seem interested.

    In defense of Brother Bear, the whole “Phil Collins singing over people talking” thing only happens once, and it’s when Kenai is telling Koda what happened to his mom, we already saw what happened to his mom so Kenai explaining it to us would be pointless

    • @Jambareeqi
      @Jambareeqi  4 роки тому

      It's not meant to be exposition for the audience though, it's a confession scene, a dramatic moment that's supposed to centre on Kenai finding the courage to admit what he did, and Koda first learning the truth. It might only happen once, but it happens to a vital important moment for our lead characters, singing over a plot point like this was a poor creative decision in my opinion.

    I also love The Rescuers Down Under, and the first one. But my only problem with Down Under is that it feels like that there's not enough of Bernard and Bianca, like they're not given enough screen time. Because they were always my favorite part of the film.

    • @bemiatto67
      @bemiatto67 5 років тому

      Yeah, I always felt this way too. It's weird cause I feel like both Rescuers films have flipped issues. The first one didn't have a lot of the action you'd think it have for a film called the Rescuers. It felt more like a Detective story, but I felt the first one had a lot more heart to it.
      The second one really upped the action and delivered on the adventurous story you'd expect from the idea, but Bernard and Miss Bianca did feel more like secondary which is a shame cause they're my favorite Disney characters

    Also, big hiro 6 is technically a marvel movie, because hiro is a marvel character

    Rescuers Down Under at the top spot... I LOVE that movie but also recognize that is often overlooked underappreciated or recognized for the gem it is. So... To see you put it at the top of your list with a detailed explanation and visual examples was refreshing and IMHO necessary... Pay no mind to those who scoff... You gave great support for your argument sweeping cinematic, great casting and character development, and I agree with you.

    I'm so happy about you're #1 pick for best! That opening flight scene was mind blowing, breath taking and beautiful! Something that wasn't even matched until the flight scenes in HTTYD.

    Jambareeqi, while I do agree with you on The Black Cauldron. I wouldn't say it's worse than Chicken Little. The Black Cauldron has really good animation, a more serious environment which helps me to swallow in the mean spirited tone more so, and I can't say it has any bad morals. I can't think of many good things to say about Chicken Little, it's just a terrible movie that I dislike more and more as the years go by.

    Jambareeqi, interesting question, after seeing Wreck it Ralph 2 and being disappointed with it, would you put it on the Bottom 5 or is it just a dishonorable mention?

      I would maybe consider putting it on the top 5 worst tbh

    You know, I'm starting to wonder whether RL Stine got inspired by the party during "Fun And Fancy Free". Maybe that's why he made his most famous monster a dummy rather than a doll. One of them even looks similar!

      Cats don't dance was Warner Bros. not Disney.

      I know, that's why it isn't in my list. If it was Disney tho, it would be there.
