It's been a very difficult year for everyone. Some of us have lost loved ones, out of jobs, closure of business. Somehow these kind of hymns remind us the HE has never abandoned us & HE still loves us all. Well I still believe in HIM very much & I don't expect everyone to agree with me. Only real Christmas music though. I don't care for "holiday music". To me Christmas music is about Christmas, Jesus, the mystery of the season. Generally choral music, although I like hymns as well and some of the folk music traditions. But this is the stuff that sounds like Christmas to me. I was wondering the other day what it is that makes Christmas music sound like Christmas music, whether it is ancient hymns or carols or something else. I can't find any answer, some people say silly things like "it has bells in it", but that is often not true and it still has that sound and feeling to it. To me music is the most apparent manifestation of God, I feel his presence most strongly when I am listening to his music. Christmas music has the most powerful and unique spirit, but I get a similar feeling from other kinds, mostly a cappella spiritual music, anything from traditional Protestant hymns to Orthodox chant. I can't do rock or pop "Christian music" though. My favorite is the old shape note hymns best known from the Sacred Harp tradition. My very favorite Christmas song (along with "O Come Emmanuel" which is the most powerful song) is a shape note hymn called "Star In The East" from the Shenandoah Harmony. If you haven't heard it I highly recommend it, either in the traditional shape note style, or one of the more modern choral arrangements of it, which would probably go down better to the average person's ears. A really powerful song with that perfect mysterious night time emotion that all good Christmas songs have. "Hail the blessed morning, see the Great Mediator, down from the regions of Glory descend, Shepherds go worship the Babe in the manger, Lo! At His feet the bright angels attend! Star In The East, the horizon adorning, Dawn on our darkness and lend us Thine aid, Brightest and best of the suns of the morning, dawn on our darkness and lend us Thine aid!"

This year I have come to the realization that "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" is the Christmas carol with the greatest theological depth. It lauds the incarnate deity of Christ while it expresses the simple truth of the Gospel.
I love it too. Gesu Bambino is one of my favorites because of all the musical layering that happens, but "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" is just a perfect Christmas song.
Amen. We lost a grandson in March, just after his 22nd birthday. We have seen so many of our beloved depart this life this year, so we hold tight to our faith. So lovely are the true hymns of Christmas, which helps keep me grounded in faith.

I'm not religous, but some christmas eves we go to our cousins church to hear our family sing in the choir, and it's so beautiful being in there while these songs are echoing throughout, it's cozy, warm, and it feels like how christmas should feel.

From Colombia, thank you for this beautiful selection. Back in the 60’s in Connecticut public schools we sang these at Christmas time. It would help today’s youth to have that experience growing up.
In Illinois we also sang these songs at Christmastime. There were maybe 8 or 9 Jewish families in town. I had a boy n my class who was Jewish but he just sang along and didn’t seem to have a problem. Another Jewish child was excused to go to the library and read while we had music. But for those of us who participated it was a wonderful experience.
There’s something about this time of the year that just makes me happy. The cold weather actually breathes in new life to me. Everyone is just so happy and hopeful. It’s truly the most magical time of the year.

She really like the Holidays. She was 90 years old. My family said that she's an angel for all of us. I'm doing good deeds for my family and friends also neighbors. To me music is the most apparent manifestation of God, I feel his presence most strongly when I am listening to his music. Christmas music has the most powerful and unique spirit, but I get a similar feeling from other kinds, mostly a cappella spiritual music, anything from traditional Protestant hymns to Orthodox chant. I can't do rock or pop "Christian music" though. My favorite is the old shape note hymns best known from the Sacred Harp tradition. My very favorite Christmas song (along with "O Come Emmanuel" which is the most powerful song) is a shape note hymn called "Star In The East" from the Shenandoah Harmony. If you haven't heard it I highly recommend it, either in the traditional shape note style, or one of the more modern choral arrangements of it, which would probably go down better to the average person's ears. A really powerful song with that perfect mysterious night time emotion that all good Christmas songs have.

It can be found in Christ's message of peace and love. The modern world has lost sight of that.

In Illinois we also sang these songs at Christmastime. There were maybe 8 or 9 Jewish families in town. I had a boy n my class who was Jewish but he just sang along and didn’t seem to have a problem. Another Jewish child was excused to go to the library and read while we had music. But for those of us who participated it was a wonderful experience.

Some families are in deep sorrow but if they meditate on these hymns it would help to put a measure of hope in their lives! I do not believe there is one family on this earth who has not been affected one way or other! God is still our only hope!
