Learning the 3pt shot is just far more accessible and valuable across the league
Yes and no. You're right some 6'3 guard shouldn't be doing it, but most PF/Cs are big enough that it becomes unblockable. Assuming they have at least a decent vertical as well. You have your whole body in the way. For them to get anywhere close to blocking it, they'd likely foul you in the process. Especially since you can use your left arm to create a little extra space as you go up. It's similar to why Dirk's 'leg out' fadeaway is unblockable for anyone remotely your size. Luka uses it quite often. It brings the ball further away from the defender when you release.
What a stupid take. No one said guards should be skyhooking. But for those that play in the post it still works. You don't have to be taller than your opponent. Any average height pf/center can learn it. You don't have to have a bigger wingspan. You just need to use your body as a divider from the defense. Hell you can have LESS wingspan and still make it work because most any defender would still have to foul you to reach it
@@gvngbvngiggy of course there is. when we say 'unblockable' that doesn't mean literally it's 100% never been blocked ever, no matter what.. If someone comes from the side or behind, they can easily block it. It's also possible to block it from in front of him in certain circumstances. If they do, they will die. Not immediately, but death is certain. Eve ate the fruit and gave Adam some to eat as well. And he did. That showed that humans are sinners and not perfect. That is why Jesus came to Earth to save humans of their sins. This leads to a relationship with God(the main reason) and eternal life. He did that by dying on the cross. 3 days later, he resurrected. Lebron did so once in 2018 where he did all the legendary shots. A half court shot, skyhook, chase down block, and a dream shake. 2018 Lebron deserved the MVP if he didnt get injured. And that's crazy considering he was 36 and can still dominate
Some charismatic big man is going to emerge out of nowhere that has a deep appreciation for the history of basketball. He's going to adopt the hook shot and perfect it and I'm here for it.
The same reason why it's important Shaq and Giannis are charismatic. He would adopt the most powerful offensive weapon in NBA history but be the opposite of Kareem's personality. He could be the face of the league.
What's even KRAZIER Is that AD has ACCESS to be able to train, be mentored, & TAUGHT by Kareem himself being LAKER ALUMNI facts! If I was AD I'd be picking tf outta Kareem's brain on God. >>SHAQ said the same thing In regards to Kareem. I.e that he NEVER TOOK ADVANTAGE of having being able to have a relationship with Kareem bkz of his/Shaq's EGO, & stubbornness bkz he thought Kareem didn't like or something like that he said In a Interview i just recently heard! He was a bucket anywhere within ) to 20ft from the goal. So he had decent shooting skills besides from at the free throw line facts ahah.
The skyhook is a very tough shot in the modern NBA, because even the 6’6” guys can get up to easily contest it; and the worst part is the wing/guard collapsing on help D. Joker and AD would need to *100% trust* that nobody pulls an Ainge/Stockton/PatBev/Brooks/etc… and goes after their legs. The highlights show the made skyhooks and it looks great, but if you watch the games it’s a different story. You’ll see Kareem doing his walking skyhook(across the key), and everyone collapsing onto his landing/stopping spot. You can literally just watch 1980s Lakers Vs Celtics games and multiple times see the disastrous results! The majority is the little shit Danny Ainge “pretending” help Defence, and the result is Kareem rolling his ankle or outright collapsing onto the floor.
Easy for people like me who are tall af for their age, I'm 6 4" at 15 and could do it in game, but alot of people would get swatted for it, and spacing in today's game and rules about zone is so different to the point that its not nearly as effective
The first guy to be considered goat being given the praise he deserves by one of the greatest scorers of all time. Always love guys like Kareem who are students of the game first, everything else second.
True, although I am not sure that's great for the game, but today's NBA is so soft it's gone the other extreme, somewhere in the middle would be better.
Wilt Chamberlain consistently blocked Kareem's Sky Hook. And that was a near retirement torn ACL Wilt. That's nothing against Kareem but just shows how great Wilt was.
Very few people know this, but it was the skyhook that broke Wilt Chamberlain’s record back in that ‘84 game in Las Vegas. He shot it over Mark Eaton of the Jazz who is 7’4”. 🏀 Kareem was still in his prime. I was 12 years of age when that happened and living in Salt Lake City. I always loved that shot. I noticed a few years ago that nobody does it these days. I don’t watch a lot of basketball mostly classics. Glad to hear this question being asked
It's cause the jump hook is much easier to learn and perfect. It allows you to face the basket directly while the sky hook has you facing the basket without being squared up.
@@TheIcemanthomas no it’s not cause Kareem was the only one to consistently shoot that shot and make it. The jump hook is far more widely used and and is made enough to be proven to be a more consistent shot
That’s not why lmao, nobody else can perfect it. It’s tougher to get off today than it was back then. Post guys don’t have much time to operate down low with the removal of illegal defense rules and how teams crowd and swarm back the basket players on the high block. This is a game where guys make a couple extra million of they’re good, you don’t think the best basketball minds in their coaches and trainers didn’t think to add this in their guys games if they could?
Everyone uses various hookshots. However, Kareem's particular sky hook is actually very difficult to use until you get it down. It's the toughest "rhythm" shot ever. Same thing goes for backboard shots. Once you can get them down reliably, it feels automatic. However, it always causes doubts to appear in the player's psyche, as such shots are not as connected and natural as an orthodox jumper. You always feel like you might miss badly.
I was so fortunate to see you coming up through power UCLA and then onto your pro career. I was blessed thank you so much for all you've done for basketball and for life
I’m 54, many dudes in my East L.A. neighborhood, including myself taught ourselves the skyhook. At 5’9” it wasn’t much in the “sky” but the form was similar. It is without a doubt the greatest weapon in the history of basketball.
How tall are you? Kareem 7 feet 2 inches. Ball in his hand when he releases it must have been 9 feet high. Maybe Shack could block it. Wilt blocked it once or twice.
I had this move in my bag when I was in middle school, it was almost unstoppable, the only reason I stopped was because people made fun of me for it, now I can't do it at all smh. moral of the story don't let people get you down, if you got something that works don't change it, stay true to yourself.
Early in his career Kareem shot the sky hook out to top of the key range. The NBA did not have the 3P shot until 1980 but I remember in a playoff series for Milwaukee vs Boston he hit a Sky Hook from the far sideline -- 22-24 feet out. When he got to the Lakers Kareem started shooting the Sky Hook from a very specific distance -- 12-16 feet. Rarely any closer or farther.
It IS a hard shot to learn. Despite what Kareem says. Especially by yourself because the ball doesn't come back to you even if you make it. Also requires a lot of core strength to make consistently.
You know how gifted you have to be to make those shot? Kareem frame gifted, no one can do it because nobody is as tall as Kareem with his long ass arms, it’s very easy to block when you’re not genetically capable of releasing it high enough, not to mention the strength you need on your wrist to even flick the ball over the defender at a strange angle, that’s why threes are used more because everyone can make them with enough hard work, plus it gives more points, so unless anyone can somehow master a skyhook three (they’ve been hyping up Victor Wembanyama so let’s see if he takes interest in it), I think we won’t be seeing it anytime soon,
@@jpatt85 Wouldn’t work nowadays, put him in todays league that shot is getting blocked a lot and he won’t even be able to get to his spot that easy, the game got much harder, would never work in todays game
If a 7 footer comes into the league with a perfect Kareem sky hook, they’re instantly the league’s top scorer today. It is still the most difficult shot to defend. The closest I think would be Tim Duncan’s bank shot which was insultingly reliable.
Honestly if you know how to create space with your off hand and with footwork, most small people can get that shot off over a way taller person. It’s essentially a side ways floater
I think because it takes the right amount of height, hand size, having touch with those hands, IQ of when to shoot it. I agree it’s weird how often it’s not shot and some big men could definitely add it to the arsenal
Dirks one leg fade, Kobe and MJ fade, DWade turn around jumper, Hardens step back 3, Manu's Eurostep and Shaq under the basket twist and dunk are also the most unstoppable moves in nba history.
My favorite Kareem stat: between three years of high school, and three seasons on the UCLA varsity (freshmen were not eligile at the time), Kareem's teams lost a grand total of four games, and one of those was by 2 pts (I think) against Elgin Baylor and Houston, when Kareem had an injured eye. And UCLA avenged that loss later in the NCAA tournament, so in a way it was only three losses.
It was the best shot ever only because he was the purveyor. He was committed to it (practiced it incessantly and used it consistently) and made it absolutely unstoppable.
Coaches don’t want players playing through the middle because it’s easier to get fouls at the basket and 3 points is more than 2. It’s also really hard to get your own board when playing in the middle because you’re boxed out naturally from the defender.

Hell you can have LESS wingspan and still make it work because most any defender would still have to foul you to reach it
I think theres actually footage of kareem having his skyhook blocked too. Probably by wilt but i might be wrong.
@@gvngbvngiggy of course there is. when we say 'unblockable' that doesn't mean literally it's 100% never been blocked ever, no matter what.. If someone comes from the side or behind, they can easily block it. It's also possible to block it from in front of him in certain circumstances. If kareem was rushed to get the shot off, someone else may have timed their jump better or he didn't get his arm fully extended.

Do you want to have a relationship with someone who loves you beyond any other love. Someone who sacrificed himself for you and everyone on this Earth the one who created the heavens and the Earth be creator of everything do you want to be saved. Do you want eternal life with peace and joy forever your answer is Jesus if you do not know who Jesus is read the following Jesus is the Son of God that came to this Earth to save the people of their sins. when God-created Earth sin same came into Earth and tempted Eve(The first woman) to eat the fruit that God had forbidden her and Adam to not eat. The story of Jesus is beautiful. If you do not already have a Bible, purchase one. If you do not have the money, pray to God about you wanting a Bible and if he could please provide one for you. This does not mean a Bible will come from the sky and land on your hands. Pray to God every day. But to not be blabbering that just say a bunch of words to try to impress and show off to other people or to impress. This does not mean long prayers are bad always pray out of the heart. Give thanks also when you pray. The Father (also God) sent his only son Jesus Christ to die for you. Rejoice brothers and sisters because your price was payed by Jesus Christ death.

Or Jokic
The skyhook is a very tough shot in the modern NBA, because even the 6’6” guys can get up to easily contest it; and the worst part is the wing/guard collapsing on help D.
Joker and AD would need to *100% trust* that nobody pulls an Ainge/Stockton/PatBev/Brooks/etc… and goes after their legs.

Everyone uses various hookshots. However, Kareem's particular sky hook is actually very difficult to use until you get it down. It's the toughest "rhythm" shot ever.

I always tried that move as a teen in the early 80S
This question has seriously been n my head lately, wow 😯
