"They don't have restrictions " if you only knew. As the western artist that are marketed for a certain audience that tend to be the teens ( since they tend to consume more the brand itself that just listen to the music like older people ) , kpop is marketed the same way , but since for Koreans teens they follow the beauty standards of SK and what is trendy which tend to be western base after the globalization happened so , since SK market is small they made it that way in order to appeal to overseas markets specially JAPAN, china , but since china got a law against kpop and other exportations that come from SK , that market got lost , so they tried to get other markets but every company dream is to get rentable in the biggest market worldwide which is the US , they tried so hard without a success until BTS came into the picture without even trying. So cuz of that US labels saw that bts was rentable so they want them but it didn't work so their way to compite was getting other groups , so with that you get to see, not only bts on US media late shows treated like other artists but also other kpop groups.
As I told you they still follow the Korean beauty standards and mindset that sell specially towards teens that are the opposite sex, so for male the beauty standards came from the "flowers boys " aristocrat warriors in the time of dynasty that were known to be beautiful and even wear make up to mark more their beauty, also they made swords dances making them to have a lot of girl "fans ", with the girls is kind of the same but towards male audience. Since The aristocracy barely got into the sun their skin was pale and for the peasant that worked under the light were tan. So the beauty standard is the pale skin. The acting "cute " again is another appeal towards the audience, also the skin ship between same sex is pretty normal on the daily basic between friends or close people , cuz since SK is a conservative country they don't see like homosexuality is a thing , so they never see something sexual in those interactions and they are raise like that. But between opposite sex , since heterosexuality is a thing , it can look as something more or even disrespectful when they don't respect their personal space, that's why you barely see people of the opposite sex interact that close or have skinship even as friendship ( that we see in the west ) so that's why guys ( specially without sisters) tend to be really shy in front of women and viceversa.
Also the dying hair became a trend in kpop specially after Gdragon ( the guy of the orange hair that you pause the video , he was inspired in David Bowie and other celebs like that ) so companies tell them to dye their hair a certain color according to the theme of the song and album they are gonna release so every new release they tend to change hair color. Also marketed in the way to keep a fresh image so the audience don't feel bored , kind of what u see with pop celebs in the west like lady Gaga , Rihanna , Britney , etc.

That song, We Are Bulletproof Pt 2, I like to think of it as one of those songs where the members introduce themselves and hype themselves up (since it was released during their debut along with No More Dream). lmao your reaction to old school BTS is hilarious, the fact that these guys aren't just the biggest kpop act in history now, but the biggest group in the planet, and the best selling artist in the world of 2020. They have come so far with their music, they used to be underdogs in general and without really much budget in their music videos, that's why you saw the difference between this and other groups, but it's because there's millions of new bts fans everyday, and some people are curious of their older stuff, that's why it's even in the video. They have probably the most impressive evolution out of all.
You might've heard their song Dynamite, it's in english and have probably played on the radio, and it also stayed on billboard hot100 n1 for multiple weeks. It sounds more western than kpop, not really their usual style, although they are very versatile in general.

@@mev9752 true, the lyrics are actually them challenging the kpop Industry and calling it out, the injustices behind that hierchical side of it where it's only groups from specific companies have big privileges in the kpop Industry, they talked about the manufactured "forced rapper" in most kpop groups, and also their peers from the underground hip-hop scene who hated on them for changing industries and called them sell outs for going into kpop instead.
BTS were struggling a lot because of that, 60% of the videos in this complilation are from a privileged company that led them to success. BTS, dominated the industry with none of that and their whole brand was to fight against that. Even until now, they aren't afraid to use their voices for injustices, but now it's reaching way more people. The fact that they've been doing it from the start, and not after they succeeded to look good, but because they actually care.

Lee Hong Ki working so hard with no pay for three years, GDragon and Taeyang training for hours with no food in their dorm. Gdragon writing songs all night, Jonghyun singing for 14 hours. EXO working so hard they fainted, SNDS, what hapoened to TVXQ and JYJ, CNBlue with no food to eat for three years. What you've said is not only unfair to these and many more artists but also false. That is why I don't read comments especially with purple hearts, most of them are one sided to promote their own group. I better leave everyone here has been fed fallacies and they just repeat them. Also, yes, groups are most common because of how the k-pop industry is structured. Basically teens and young adults get signed to an agency to become a trainee, which is not a guarantee they'll ever actually make music, but rather they rigorously train alongside dozens of other hopeful trainees for months to years in everything from vocal and dance lessons to foreign languages, comportment, acting, you name it. The agency usually then forms groups from the trainees and the group members continue training together as a unit, but even then they may never end up debuting or disbanding within a year of debut. It's crazy competitive, hundreds of groups trying to make it every year. There are some negatives to the system for sure and not all agencies treat trainees or their artists well, but it's complex. Solo artists in k-pop are often group members who release solo side projects or go solo after their group disbands. Some popular exceptions who've always been solo are IU , Younha, BoA, and Eric Nam. There's also other genres of Korean music where solo artists are more common.

    - AGUST D (SUGA of BTS) - Daechwita - his flow in this particular song is amazing, also, lyrics are huge part of it so if you watch full song, please, turn on english subs!
    - J-HOPE (of BTS) - Chicken Noodle Soup - this song was made with Becky G to kind of comemorate song that inspired them in their childhood. J-HOPE paid Bianca so well for allowing him to bring this song back to life, he is very respectful toward other artists :)

Kpop is kind of complicated since it's an umbrella term for korean popular music so it has several genres within it.
The first that comes to mind when thinking of kpop is idol music. Idol music is the big groups that dominated a large part of this video. Idols in the groups tend to have solo projects while still remaining in the group after a few years of activity. Some idol groups I'd recommend and some of their songs as well are:
    Boy Groups:
    - Stray Kids: My Pace, I Am You, Mirror, Voices
    - Exo: Lotto, Tempo, Overdose, Call Me Baby,
    - Seventeen: Getting Closer, Clap, Fear, Don't Wanna Cry
    Girl Groups:
    - Itzy: Wannabe, Not Shy, Dalla Dalla, Icy
    - Twice: Likey, More&More, Cheer Up, I Can't Stop Me
    - Red Velvet: Bad Boy, Psycho, Dumb Dumb, Ice Cream Cake
    Male Soloists:
Kang Daniel: Paranoia, Antidote, Wave, Who U Are
G-Dragon: Crooked, Crayon, Untitled 2014, Good Boy
    Taemin: Criminal, Move, Idea, Danger
    Female Soloists:
    IU: Palette, Eight, Twenty-three, BBIBBI
Hyolyn: Dally, Say My Name, SEE SEA, Spell
Hwasa: Maria, Twit, LMM, Don't(Above Live)
Then there's the khiphop genre, I don't know as much about it or any of the other genres so I won't have as many suggestions.
    Male artists:
Zico: Bermuda Triangle, Any Song, Okey Dokey, SoulMate
Bobby: Holup, U Mad, Runaway, I Love You
Flowsik: Wet, Bbung, All I Need, Recipe
    Female artists:
    Cheetah: Villain
Jessi: Who Dat B, Drip, What Type of X, Nunu Nana
I don't know many female khiphop rappers, sorry, but! I have a solution. If you are interested in khiphop, there is a song called 119 Remix which is a collaboration between 51 different rappers that lasts about 19 minutes.
Anyway, let me end this with some krnb:
Dean: Instagram, Pour Up, D(Half Moon), Come Over
Okay, ngl, Dean is the only krnb artist I know. Anyway, I hope this was good, this took a long time to write after all and I sincerely hope I didn't waste my time or something.
Have a good journey in this beautiful musical genre filled with talented artists!

@@Jovacane The most noticeable thing that has changed about kpop for me is the sheer amount of popular groups debuting each year. While hundreds of groups are launched each year in kpop even most hardcore kpop fans would only know at most like 3-4 new debuted groups but with kpops globalization and social media it seems groups that are able to sustain themselves and be moderately successful or even huge groups are being produced at a much higher pace. An example being HYBE(bts company) after the bts members started planning to go to their military service in 2022 they have created 6 groups. One of the things that many people have also noticed is the talent is not as high level as it used to be. With so many groups being pushed out the skill level has definitely dropped.

Also it was funny seeing you react to old school BTS xD Most of the views for those videos come from their fans streaming all their music. At the time, a lot of those songs by BTS weren’t popular.
Also I recommend listening to a favorite kpop songs playlist made by a kpop fan since these most-viewed compilations are mostly dominated by uber-popular and revolutionary groups regardless of the particular song’s quality. "They have a lot of freedom" oof I'm afraid to tell you this but...believe it or not, not many groups have freedom. I know it all looks like happiness and rainbows from the outside but it's not. There is a lot of good in Kpop, but there's also some bad. Although some artists are free to do whatever they want, most artists are controlled by their company. Minor things that in our culture seem normal, is unacceptable in theirs and can get an artist kicked out of their group and company. Creative freedom is also something that depends on the company. Even if an artist can write or produce music, sometimes their company doesn't give them the opportunity to release that music. Out of all the Kpop companies, I can only think of 3 that actually give their artists complete freedom.

I enjoyed your commentary so much! It's obvious that your reactions were genuine (which isn't always true with YT k-pop reactors!), and I loved seeing your appreciation of not just the k-pop style but the Korean cultural differences in gender restrictions and artistic expression. The way Korean men show affection and vulnerability with their male friends is such a startling contrast, isn't it? Which is sad commentary on the US, really. My love of Korean media started with k-dramas in Sep (you also might like how different their dramas are from the tired US show format; try Crash Landing on You on Netflix!) and that soon led to finding k-pop, and now it's all I watch and listen to. It really is a breath of fresh air. I listen to a lot of k-pop artists, but BTS are my favs. So far most of their entries on this list you're watching have been older tracks with their hip-hop style, but you'll see their style change more and more over the years as they end up dominating that list towards the end, often embracing the bright colors and playful styles you seem to like best. So many great artists out there though!

What makes Kpop groups so “strong”? They all have to go through years of training before they’re even put in a group but a lot of ppl don’t even get to debut so they’ve all worked extremely hard to get to the same outcome. Some artists train for lesser periods of time but I know many that’ve trained for 8+ years to be in a group. The strict contracts keep them from being able to break up as well lmao- 👀

I can't even really say I listen to much dance music anymore... I totally get what you're saying though because I'm seeing the same thing...even in rock and metal! The creativity is off the charts! The talent is very high level...like across the board. They are using it all... I hear people all the time ask "What the hell are they putting in the water over there?" (If anyone is unfamiliar whith that saying, it's a leftover from the Cold War between US and USSR, when the US thought that USSR was trying to poison the water supply, except now it morphed into something good...lol) It does remind me of the 90's in the US and Uk...all those boy and girl groups... Like japan right now seem to be obssessed with disco music..can you imagine, fresh disco music....lol Korea is a bit ...."looser" with the social restriction thing...but while japan may still be a bit more reserved...they express it in other ways... Like you pointed out the fashions and the colors...Japan takes that to the weird level...I love it...It's like they are the DisneyWorld of countries...lol I'm fascinated, that's all I gotta say... And if people wanna call that yellow fever or whatever, you go right ahead... ain't gonna spoil my fun! Great reaction...will be loking for the next one!

Hi, some things about this boys.
*Bts Is south Korean group, this days people prefer don't mix them with kpop.
Kpop ist a genre and bts are know for their great repertoire of genres.
Kpop is an industry in Korea, and not all singers/rappers/musicians in Korea are "kpop"
    1. They are 7, 4 vocalist, 3 rappers (2 underground rappers) all dancers
    2. Bts compose and produce in all their albums, so is very personal, they talk about mental health, politics, society, their fans, self love, etc
    3. They have a story behind their videos so is difficult to new people understand, we (the armys) used to read a books and study set, philosophy, psychology and mythology to understand. Their last album for example was "map of the soul: 7" and is inspired by the psychologist book the map of the soul by Murray.
    4. The army love them because they are good people who through a lot of bad things to be where they are now, and even being famous they stay humble.
    5. They have a lot of genres but their base is very hiphop / rap. Also you can find subtitles in every possible language thanks to the fans, u only need to search with the name of the song or Activate cc.
**Bts always present themselves as a Korean group, and always said they don't want to be labeled in a genre or industry. The fans also do not want to be mixed with kpopers, (most of us aren't kpop fans) we don't have the same ideals.

I enjoyed your reaction. I think it’s great that as someone who is being introduced to KPOP for the first time you started with a reaction video to different groups to get an overall feel.
Absolutely no shade to other groups because people are allowed to like what they like but most in the BTS fandom (called ARMY) don’t really consider BTS as a kpop boyband even though they are labeled under that category. Most BTS fans don’t listen to other kpop groups. Their diversity and range in terms of their songs, deep lyrics (without being boring), and the overall messages (talking about topics that you don’t hear from other groups) make them stand out to us from kpop. also because their songs cover many genres (hip hop, rap, pop, latin, EDM, r&b, classical, etc) and they came from a tiny record label unlike the others. Whenever a new song of theirs comes out we never know what to expect. 3 rappers and 4 vocalists and all of them dance incredibly to really hard choreography. For some reason as a group with members that are so different from one another their music works so well which is difficult to pull off.
The reason they are not just the biggest kpop group but the biggest group in the world period, outselling even western/US globally, is that their music and messages are universal despite, other than Dynamite their only English song, their songs are mainly in Korean. THAT is impressive.
I hope you react to more BTS music videos to see what I mean. Highly suggest you react to On: kinetic manifesto, Mic Drop feat. Steve Aoki, and Blood Sweat and Tears to start with. PLEASE REMEMBER TO HIT THE CC BUTTON FOR THE ENGLISH SUBTITLES FOR THE LYRICS.

I'm very late! But fr as a black woman I was very drawn to kpop when I was younger for some of the reasons you mentioned lol! It's a pretty stark difference and I never want young black girls to feel as if they are confined to the image thats being painted for us 🥲 Didn't mean to make this so serious lmaooo
