Pete, I have planted corn seeds in the ground all my life, lol, this old great grandmama didn't know or ever tried to transplant corn seedlings!!! I am so interested in this method. We didn't have any mice because of the barn cats we had and have now. Living in south Texas they are year around pests. I still plant corn the old fashion way... long ditches, all the fish guts and sea weed from the coast (we save them all and freeze), layer all that and cover with about ten inches of soil. Then, every six inches we plant three corn seeds. If by some chance some critters come and dig and eat one or two seeds, we still have one left that will germinate. Most of the time all three come up and we pull out the smallest ones. We rinse and use them in a salad, very tasty! The reason we plant so close together is the corn stalks uphold each other through strong windy days and rain storms. The rows are also six inches apart. The pollination process is something to see in the early mornings. It's so heavy it looks like a cloud over the field. And the close planting you get an awesome harvest. Also, it kept the weeds down too. The kids loved to be in the corn rows pulling out some of the weeds and finding baby rabbits sometimes. Now my great grandkids love running throughout the smaller areas where we grow corn. I will be watching your videos Pete on your corn. Please keep us posted, this is very interesting. GOD bless you and your family in Jesus!!! Amen.

My problem has always been birds. They will sit their quietly watching you plant and once you go in the house they will swoop down and gobble those seeds up. Good luck

I have the same problem here in Texas also. I thought it was the squirrels, but I’m not sure. Anyhow I planted starts as well. And they still dug up the plant and ate the corn seed off of the bottom, and left the plant to die.

I had a mice infestation in my building when I moved in. And with bait boxes and traps it looks as though I'm winning. Last summer the flies were everywhere and so i bought fly traps and hung them up and within a week they were full. I have placed bait boxes outside towards the corners raised up on flat rocks that i have screwed to, so that they don't move.

Looks like you got those in the ground just in time for this latest freeze, hope they survive

Howdy Pete. Looking good. Never seen anyone start their corn like that... makes sense. Might help with the spotty germination I get sometimes with direct sow. Or maybe it was mice... who knows? I'll have to have a meeting with the barn cats... lol. My corn patch isn't nearly as big so I might give it a try. Thanks for sharing 🤠

Pete, I've had problems with squirrels and birds eating my corn and bean seeds when direct planted. They will even pull up the just emerged plant to get to the remaining parts of the seed. I figured out if I put a lightweight row cover over the plantings, they don't bother them (the white spun stuff). It also holds in a little extra heat to help those synergistic and super sweets corn seeds to germinate a little earlier. I'm in 3'x20' raised beds, so it's easy for me to do. Not sure how well this would translate to a larger open bed though. I may have to give starting them in flats a try this year. With starts in flats, you know for sure you have a germinated seed/plant to put out and not guessing on if that directed seeded one will ever come up! Thanks for another great video!!!!

What about the two kitties that you adopted? Aren't they catching the mice?

Pete, how do you fertilize through the weed barrier? Or do you just add through the holes you burned?
