I remember my mom buying me this at Toys R Us because it was only $20, whereas everything else was at least $40 (some as high as $80 at the time!). She also knew that I loved trivia and quiz shows, so the idea of incorporating Disney trivia was a huge selling point. It took me five days to beat it for the first time, but no one saw. So the next day, I did it again in front of my mom, and did an absolutely perfect run in 7 minutes. She smiled as she cussed me out for not taking longer, because that meant I could get another new game. I'd never done a speed run before (intentional or not), and I've never done one since. Definitely some fond memories with this one.
I think one thing that makes these so short is once you actually figure out what you need to do, they tend to be very easy. A lot of NES games involved trial and error until you figure out the best path that works for you. I've been playing the same games as they get uploaded here and with their help, I realized how easy and short some of these games are. Like Ghosts N Goblins, once I learned the first part of the second stage can be cleared by just running and jumping, it made it a lot easier than trying to fight those flying imps. If our kind guide is reading this, typically how much time do you spend researching games and playing them to the extent you do? Because I imagine it's a lot of hard work.

This was one of those games I played growing up that I rented once in awhile, but never got very far in. For a game that's supposed to be geared towards children, I always thought it was kinda hard.

With Magic Kingdom, each stage has it's own mechanics and rules and they aren't always clearly defined. The train stage is literally trial and error. The racing stage makes it feel like you have to actually race, but you don't. I blame part of it on the era the NES was from. Games still had a bad habit of being unclear on things still. Renting games was always a gamble, especially since getting the NES manual with them was really uncommon for me.
I wonder if that's why they didn't make Mickey the hero - They were worried that would skew the demographic younger and the kids that played wouldn't be able to handle this one. Of course Mickey Mouscapde is very hard for little kids
Well I think the point of this game is to suggest the player join the disney universe by connecting with all their brand icon characters. The focus is on visiting the theme park and doing all the rides. The game designers clearly intended these two things.
The haunted house is one of the most atmosphere levels, since my childhood I started to love creepy and scary things: books, arts, movies and so on. I can say this game had formed my tastes!
This game feels like a precursor to Kingdom Hearts, with Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. The protagonist is like some sort of prototype Sora (ie, huge shoes lol)
@@CarletonTorpin Lone Ranger for the NES. Wild Guns for SNES. The Red Dead games, and there was a game called Gun for PS2. It's not a well-mined genre.
If you look at it this way, the character's hair colour (although a tad darker) brings Sora from Kingdom Hearts to mind. Maybe this is the game that started it all since Sora's weapon is a giant key. 🤔🤷🏼♀️ Who knows?

I used to play this game all the time at my grandpas house when I was small. For some reason many of my worst nightmares have featured the pirates ride level. Never actually beat any of the levels in this game but I love the music.

The content has gotten more top notch with every installment. You are hitting your stride. As for this game, never had it. I would see it at Palmer Video back in the days (remember video rental stores. Kids today will never know that feeling going in one) but never paid any attention to it as a kid. Might have to give this one a look

I received an NES for Christmas, and this was the game I got a along with Mario/duck hunt. I remember how hard it was for 4/5 year old. 1) autopia was the first level I could beat. 2) space mountain was sooo hard! 3) I thought the pirates were baseball players and was confused since it was the pirate ride!

Rescue Rangers was a vastly superior game and was two players. There's no wonder it blew away magic kingdom in terms of sales. I played through it dozens of times with my siblings. I recently took my girlfriend through it on the disney collection on my PS4. It's a game that holds up very well.
@@BigBearHgX One as in depth as UCBVG usually gets? I can see that being kind of hard to do with how Swords and Serpents is just one big maze from start to finish. At least with Dragon Warrior the scenery changed once in a while.

Hey, my wife enjoyed this episode so much it makes her want to beat her copy! This and Mickey Mouscapades I didn't know about as a kid and haven't played our copies. I hope you do more Disney on nintendo and sega! They are top tier platformers on both companies consoles! There are also at least 2 on turbografx (sticking with cartridge consoles). Great video, shocked its so short, would have loved more levels (I've been to DisneyWorld once, but Disneyland is my home park). Did you know that Disneyland, Disney World, and Tokyo Disneyland all have games set in them (at least 3 for the magic kingdom)? There's also the arcade version of a vertical shooter that has you fighter go over Disney airspace (the castle is very obvious, definately censored for consoles). I really hope code name: viper (short, but capcom), Air Fortress, ghost lion, digger t rock, and Bible Adventures are on your list.

Honestly, they should've just overhauled it and made it an adaptation of The Rescuers Down Under (just change the protagonist slightly to resemble Jake).
This game had so much potential to be great, but it always leaves me wanting. It easily could have divided itself into worlds like the Super Mario and other games did. It would be divided into six worlds, where at the end of each world, you receive a key. This game of course is really based on the Disneyland park in California and not The Magic Kingdom in Florida, so I'd pertrain the design to that game. All attractions were active as of 1990, so I'll only include those. World 1 would have been Main Street, USA, where you'd have the Disney trivia, WDW railroad, arcade, and Main Street Cinema levels where in the last, you basically play as Mickey in classic shorts as you reach a goal. The arcade would be a fun game of pinball, while the railroad is sort of the easier version of the Big Thunder Mountain railroad, where you have to avoid dead ends and obstacles, but don't have to race to clock or reach a certain station. World 2 would be Adventureland, with the Pirates of the Caribbean level from this game, Jungle Cruise where you must avoid animals along a raft ride, and a tough, but fun Swiss Family Treehouse where you must retrieve the key at the top. World 3 would be a combo of Frontierland and Critter Country, where Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the Haunted Mansion, another water level with the Tom Sawyer riverboat, and Frontierland shooting gallery challenge you. World 4 is Fantasyland, where you must save Snow White in his scary adventures dark ride, a sky-themed level with Peter Pan's Flight, and have the daunting task of getting the fourth key at the Matternhorn. But Fantasyland is so big, it gets a second world! World 5 starts off with It's A Small World where cultural challenges await you in addition to just a boat ride. This is followed by another flight ride with Dumbo, a conveyor belt challenge with the Mad Tea Party, and finally an underwater expedition with 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea where the fifth key awaits you. And to wrap things up, Tomorrowland is the final, and most difficult world. The Autopia race from the actual game is there, but there's also the Astro-Orbiter (shown on the map but not used), a space-shooter level, the Carousel of Progress (just a side-scroller, but a difficult level with lots of enemies), and of course the final, most difficult level, Space Mountain, where the sixth and final key awaits. There you have it, instead of just five levels and a bit of trivia, 22 plus the trivia, and you finally have a game that's worth purchasing.
This was a frequent rental when I was a kid, but usually it was because all the games I wanted were rented out. I vastly preferred Mickey Mousecapade, Duck Tales or Rescue Rangers if I needed a Disney fix. I enjoyed this video as always though.
I wonder if not using Mickey Mouse was Disney hedging their bets. "What if this really sucks? We can't have Mickey Mouse losing to Mario." Maybe. ANYWAY, this was a great game and should always be on a top list.
I always had the idea that this game was a prequel of "Kingdom Hearts"; both games have Disney theme worlds, the important use of "keys" and the main protagonist is not a Disney character, in a way they are very similar.
The Space Mountain segment got me wondering if you've ever considered covering Solar Jetman. One of those where I read the Nintendo Power ragged but never played (until I ordered a copy off eBay a few years ago)
Allegedly a boy was playing with a lighter or candles and a lighter and was the cause of the Haunted Castle fire. If that's true, and I don't know whether it is or not, he may have gotten the idea from the scare-house level of this video game.

Its cheap af too. Like $10 i think. This is a classic American game because it was cool to own but more commonly just rented for a weekend. The worst thing to say about it is that it was common or short.
I remember renting this one a few times. I could always get the trivia and space mountain keys, but the rest were pretty tough. Probably because I didn't know about the select menu? I always wanted to beat the game so I could explore the stores by the gate. (Small wonder I discovered my niche in RPGs rather than action games. 🤭)

World 1 would have been Main Street, USA, where you'd have the Disney trivia, WDW railroad, arcade, and Main Street Cinema levels where in the last, you basically play as Mickey in classic shorts as you reach a goal. The arcade would be a fun game of pinball, while the railroad is sort of the easier version of the Big Thunder Mountain railroad, where you have to avoid dead ends and obstacles, but don't have to race to clock or reach a certain station. World 2 would be Adventureland, with the Pirates of the Caribbean level from this game, Jungle Cruise where you must avoid animals along a raft ride, and a tough, but fun Swiss Family Treehouse where you must retrieve the key at the top. World 3 would be a combo of Frontierland and Critter Country, where Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the Haunted Mansion, another water level with the Tom Sawyer riverboat, and Frontierland shooting gallery challenge you. World 4 is Fantasyland, where you must save Snow White in his scary adventures dark ride, a sky-themed level with Peter Pan's Flight, and have the daunting task of getting the fourth key at the Matternhorn. But Fantasyland is so big, it gets a second world! World 5 starts off with It's A Small World where cultural challenges await you in addition to just a boat ride. This is followed by another flight ride with Dumbo, a conveyor belt challenge with the Mad Tea Party, and finally an underwater expedition with 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea where the fifth key awaits you. And to wrap things up, Tomorrowland is the final, and most difficult world. The Autopia race from the actual game is there, but there's also the Astro-Orbiter (shown on the map but not used), a space-shooter level, the Carousel of Progress (just a side-scroller, but a difficult level with lots of enemies), and of course the final, most difficult level, Space Mountain, where the sixth and final key awaits. There you have it, instead of just five levels and a bit of trivia, 22 plus the trivia, and you finally have a game that's worth purchasing.
This was a frequent rental when I was a kid, but usually it was because all the games I wanted were rented out. I vastly preferred Mickey Mousecapade, Duck Tales or Rescue Rangers if I needed a Disney fix. I enjoyed this video as always though.
This game is BRUTAL lol. Unbelievable difficulty on some of these levels.

I wonder if not using Mickey Mouse was Disney hedging their bets. "What if this really sucks? We can't have Mickey Mouse losing to Mario." Maybe.
ANYWAY, this was a great game and should always be on a top list.

I actually had this game it was super fun.
I always had the idea that this game was a prequel of "Kingdom Hearts"; both games have Disney theme worlds, the important use of "keys" and the main protagonist is not a Disney character, in a way they are very similar.
The Space Mountain segment got me wondering if you've ever considered covering Solar Jetman. One of those where I read the Nintendo Power ragged but never played (until I ordered a copy off eBay a few years ago)

Allegedly a boy was playing with a lighter or candles and a lighter and was the cause of the Haunted Castle fire. If that's true, and I don't know whether it is or not, he may have gotten the idea from the scare-house level of this video game.
I rem wanting to go to WDW and parents said no.. they got me this game, lol. 4 years later we finally went... loved The haunted mansion and pirates... this was a great game.
This is how I nerdy I am. When you jump with the car because it's from Capcom it's the sound of ice man stage when the ice blocks are forming from the first mega man .What a pain in the ass stage that was.

Its cheap af too. Like $10 i think. This is a classic American game because it was cool to own but more commonly just rented for a weekend. The worst thing to say about it is that it was common or short.
I remember renting this one a few times. I could always get the trivia and space mountain keys, but the rest were pretty tough. Probably because I didn't know about the select menu?
I always wanted to beat the game so I could explore the stores by the gate. (Small wonder I discovered my niche in RPGs rather than action games. 🤭)
On Space Mountain I always thought that the "alien spaceship" looked like a front view of an Imperial Star Destroyer from Star Wars.
