  • Born Paris, 1850: died St Petersburg 1916. French conductor, teacher & composer, although primarily associated with his life in Russia. Studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Marmotel [piano] and Duprato [composition].
    Settled in Moscow in 1871 and became a conductor of the Theatre Bouffe.
    He also concertized extensively and from 1891, taught piano at the Music-Drama School of the Moscow Philharmonic Society.
    In 1897 he became superintendent of the Moscow Imperial Theatre, and music director of the Aleksandrovsky Institute.
    As a composer, cultivated a technically polish, electic style influenced by French lyric and Italian verismo opera. Some of his works also reflect the influences of his contemporary Russian composers including Tchaikovsky.

    Listened to this six times in a row and I couldn’t reconcile the first 30 seconds or so. Then I left it to prepare some food and came back to listening to it two more times and on the seventh listening at about 40 seconds towards the end I didn’t want the piece to end. On the eighth listening I had grown to like the dissonance. There is some kind of asymmetric emotion at work in the composition. I can’t put my finger on it. As short as the piece is it takes achingly long to resolve but is very rewarding all the way to its expiration.As monsieur Chopin is alleged to have said “the music isn’t in the notes that you strike but between the notes that are struck.” Words to that effect anyway.
    This piece is evocative of that.

    Ich weiß nicht, ob das Absicht ist - aber Du spielst kleine Fermaten auf dem 4. Achtel, zumindest am Anfang. Das wirft mich immer etwas aus dem Flow...
