The girl who sings is an orphan who is near a river ( "her little" river "rechenka" is the familiar diminutive of "rika": "river" ) to say that she is about to be married but that she will have neither father nor mother to bless her. Ever since that time everyday I have watched the originals of all her video which give me chills still but I love anyone who is for the first time also being drawn in by her unusual voice which tells a story like none other I have ever listened to. Before going to the children’s Voice she had already won 40-50 national and international competitions, it’s the children’s Voice that lost out but you will have mixed emotions after reacting to it. Hi Carl, I can relate. I, too was adopted. But as an infant. I was one of the lucky ones, the best parents in the world! But even so, there are many emotional traumas, and self identity issues that I think any adopted child encounters, much of the time as an adult...I understand that she was left by her abusive mother. This song is based on traditional Russian folk songs. The girl who sings is an orphan who is near a river ( "her little" river "rechenka" is the familiar diminutive of "rika": "river" ) to say that she is about to be married but that she will have neither father nor mother to bless her.
The river as in ancient cultures is also the border between the world of the living and that of the dead (the Styx of the Greeks)
At the end of the perfomance crossing the river in a boat pushed by some kind of "zombie" seems to indicate she prefers suicide to marriage under these conditions.
You understand better now the extremely dramatic tone of this song which fits wonderfully with Diana's voice. Her admirers often say that she is "the voice of the Earth or the Nature's voice".
Your astonishment is not exceptional! Diana uses many vocal techniques rarely used in pop music (like overtones, yodel, and some from classical singing....). The one that seems to amaze people the most is bitonal or multitonal voice. The root notes are enriched with powerful harmonics which can give the impression that there are several overlapping voices or an artificial effect which gives this result.
This technique is used in Slavic folk music, like Bulgarian vocal groups or artists like Pelageya (ua-cam.com/users/OlegSemyonov73videos), the Russian folk diva. I cannot tell you exactly how these artists achieve this result, I was just told that it is linked to the simultaneous use of the different resonators of the human body and that such a mastery of the voice and of the breath with such a fluidity requires years of work, Diana has been singing on stage and has been taking singing and performing arts lessons since the age of 6!
This broadcast is "You're Great!" ("You are Super"), a song contest reserved for children who have had a difficult start in life. This is the case of Diana who was mistreated and ended up in an orphanage at 3 years old.
In her shows, Diana participates in the direction, direction and arrangements of her performances. She is a complete artist.

Hi! This is not about suicide. In the old days, it was believed that every girl before the wedding, as it were, dies, in order to then reincarnate as a married woman. Therefore, the whole ceremony and songs before the wedding, resembles the mourning of the deceased. At the wedding itself, there was fun, but within the bounds of decency, of course.:)

This is an old Russian folkish song. We can say that this is crying. Diana sings this song on behalf of a young girl who lived in the 18th or 19th century. Most likely it was a country girl. Her parents died. And then she was taken up by another family. Two centuries ago, this meant that the step daughter was actually a servant in the family. And new parents could give her for a husband for someone they like. And there is no one to bless her. And now, having got into such a situation and realizing that the girl had no rights, she came to the river (this is the name of the song - "River", but pronounced affectionately). And she cries by the river about what is happening in her life.

She was 14 yrs old when she performed this song on the first time she was on the show called “You are Super” which is for orphaned and disadvantaged children. She wins this years show and then the next years show which was a winners version of the show which she wins as well.

Ever since that time everyday I have watched the originals of all her video which give me chills still but I love anyone who is for the first time also being drawn in by her unusual voice which tells a story like none other I have ever listened to. Before going to the children’s Voice she had already won 40-50 national and international competitions, it’s the children’s Voice that lost out but you will have mixed emotions after reacting to it. As I understand it, it is an old Russian folk song about a young orphan bride who doesn't have her parents to bless her wedding. She cries out to the river (rechenka), about her sadness and heartbreak as the river is the barrier between the world of the living and the world of the dead. It is poignant to Diana as she herself was adopted.

Hi Carl, I can relate. I, too was adopted. But as an infant. I was one of the lucky ones, the best parents in the world! But even so, there are many emotional traumas, and self identity issues that I think any adopted child encounters, much of the time as an adult...I understand that she was left by her abusive mother. This is from an old traditional folk-tale, about an orphaned girl who is supposed to marry someone that she doesn't love, so she goes down to the river (the border between the living and the dead) to talk to her mother and get her advice. That rough, weird voice near the beginning is her mother asking why she isn't happy; the rest is her explaining her sad situation. At the end, she decides to let the river and it's spirits carry her away.
Amazing that she can emote like that at her age, yes?! To be able to take command of the stage and the song ... when she's still some years away from turning 20 years old?!
