I served in Bamberg from January 1973 thru August 1975. Love the city and the people a lot. It’s been most 48 yeas since I left Bamberg, and I am sorry to say that I never went back. It was part of the best times of my life!
I was there as an army brat teeny bopper in the mid 60s. The first 8 months was horrible. After we got quarters it was good. I wouldn't say it was the best time of my life but ONE of the best even though I hated it. The best of times .. the worst of times.
WOW lots of memories. I was stationed in Bamberg with HHC 6 of the 6 infantry in 1991. From Bamberg we got deployed to the Saudi in support of dessert shield and dessert storm.I din"t know they had closed.
Bill Vaughn here. I was in C Co 2/54th Inf 1965-68. We were in old brick barracks from WWII. Was in Bamberg again with the RPC 1975-78. Bamberg wasn't bad at all. Married the second time and lived in Strullendorf. Enjoyed both tours even though the infantry part sucked. Anyone remember the units back then?
I was in A 1/52 1982-4. You turned down my company street at 3:35. Alpha Co. was the second door, HHC was the one closer to the road. The perimeter wall was solid near the barracks back then. Loved Bamberg, loved my time there. Sad to see ones past fade away bit-by-bit.
I went back there in 92 after having been an army brat in the mid 60s.I think it would be quite heart wrenching to see it now since it's been closed for 9 years.
I watched parts 2 and 3 trying to spot my old digs from 73-77 no luck but I should have just watched part 1 first. There it is at about 3:00, ol' 1-52nd infantry. I was in the Combat Support Company. Just like I remembered it. Battalion HQ, the old fatigue bar (great burgers cooked by a German lady who looked and sounded like Aunt Bee) the track park, the maintainance bays, the street that I walked down and hang a right for the PX, snack bar, and movie theatre. Even the wall we used to jump till the pricks embedded broken glass along the top. Yeah I was there for 3 and a half years (I signed up for a four year enlistment in case I didn't like it and I didn't LOL). Can't say I remember the Germans being "gracious." More they put up with the nuisance of a bunch of young idiots every weekend. But I did come away with a respect for Germans and Germany. Was happy to leave but still lots of memories I could go on and maybe I will no I better stop. In the end it's all mox nix I guess.
1980 -82 HHC 1/52 spc4 COMMO..I put heaters in our jeeps..They had the kits for yrs on high shelves in the motor pool. and cleaned / adjust the carb on the GP tent kerosene heaters.
Blacksheep 1/54-6/6 inf. 1988-90. Grass looks good by the barracks post office. Me and my bro's replanted it with a e-tool while on 45/45. Great times. you can most of the guys on facebook
1/54 combat support 72-74 cannot say I miss it See they changed the barracks and gate opening next to what was brigade HQ my old room looked out on parade grounds of bgd HQ Early 72 had 3 companies shoved in each building while they renovated. Double stacked bunks and wall to wall lockers on other side.
