I was excited to learn just how you go about "discovering" remote fishing spots but Curtis gave it away when he said he had been to one or more of these lakes before. Well, for most of us, that is not the answer we are looking for. The real question is this: how do you find lakes like these if you've never been there before? Didn't you learn about every one of your favorite fishing spots from someone else sharing that information with you?

So I travel for work and literally fly fish almost any day off I have. I've been to about 10 states this year. My method of finding streams, ponds, lakes, etc is gps mapping. I use Google maps, on X all trails and trout routes. I currently can't use trout routes because I'm in a state(s) that isn't in the app. But on x is a great tool. It shows me the land owner and lets me figure out best way there. And then i use all trails to see if there is a hiking trail nearby. Just in the PNW area I've found areas that clearly are very rarely fished and found some awesome fish. I've debated making a channel, but know literally nothing about filming, etc and with the amount of bushwhacking I do think it'd be hard.
But get out and just explore. I've been to so many streams with 0 fish, but just beautiful areas and has really made me appreciate nature and it's complexity.

Hey Steve. Thanks for the feedback. I think you might miss the point on this a little so let me expand. Certainly a part of "exploration" is visiting a lake multiple times during the year because they act as totally different lakes at different times so it's a process of discovery, not an event. I think most people are hoping we'll send GPS coordinates. That's just not realistic and certainly not how I find lakes. While we certainly hear things about lakes, we rarely, if ever, visit a lake or stream solely on someone's word. I have a database I've kept for years that includes stocking numbers, kill-off's, photos and fishing reports as well as old maps, notes and other info I can sock away. It's a huge effort to whittle down the list and then make trip after trip of trial and error. So no, I did NOT learn about every spot from someone else. Far from it. This video basically shows a "day in the life" of that process. Maybe in a future video we'll go through a much more detailed glimpse into what we do to track these things down. But the good part of this is that very few people are willing to put in the work to get these places dialed in. Seems most people just want a location and what to use. Anyway, sorry for the long response but I felt I needed to clarify. This is certainly a good topic for a future podcast or video though. Take care!

@@FlyFishFood Thank you - I think your paragraph above is more enlightening and helpful (and answers the title of your video) better than the video itself. I really do understand why you don't name lakes in your online videos (or freely give GPS coordinates). Keeping a data base seems like a good help and like many anglers I am willing to "put in the work" for the reward. But what happens to fly fishers that (1) don't have much extra income (for gas, food, gear, etc) which is more and more becoming an issue, (2) don't have a lot of free time to explore and try lots of places that may or may not have trout, (3) have physical limitations such that long and strenuous hikes in hopes of finding good fishing just can't be justified, and (4) are getting up there in years (like me) and don't have a lot of time to spend hiking - I'd rather be fishing! Please understand my original comment was not meant as a criticism or complaint - rather it was a reaction to watching the video with the hope of learning something new and exciting and then at the end feeling a bit deflated because of my expectation wasn't met - kind of like kissing your sister . . .

Before the internet and google earth and google maps there were state atlases. That’s how we did it. Trucks and float tubes driving around pretty much lost in the mountains. Love it!! Great video, guys!

I'm tying some Rainbow Warriors right now, and have this video playing on a laptop behind my vise. I can't think of anything better company than the Fly Fish Food crew while I tie frantically to prepare for my next day on the water

Haha, my buddy sent me a link to this video talking about the bacon wrapped better cheddars shout out. I watched this video a long time ago. I missed that part apparently. The curry looked good, but could never beat out the Better cheddars 😁

So what, you just drive around in your side by side and that's how discover lakes? Thanks for the click bait #Unsubscribed.
