I got the amazing chance to meet Lacey and hear this poem read live and it brought tears to my eyes. She's such an amazing writer not to mention she is the sweetest human ever. She immediately hugged me when I walked up to her she's so down to earth and woke aF. No matter what her hair looks like she speaks truth and is a poc rights activist so please look her up and research before judging her ((:
Bravo....Bravo....I nod my head to you in sincere appreciation of your wisdom filled muse. You have lived it, you have soul, you speak the words that NO man nor government can control...I bid you peace. In admiration, g.a.meeder
She was amazing. I loved the line, "with heavy shoulders and tear stained cheeks, looking for a hand to hold." I have to learn to write slam poetry. Such passion.
what a fucked up society we live in, when a beautifully brave woman stands up for the rights of herself and her sisters, and is bitched about for her hair style. LISTEN to her words. They are what is important.
That's the problem. She's bitching about problems that need to be bitched about but she's also causing other problems. She's appropriating black culture and being admired regardless of this.
You rock, Lacey....the comments below are really interesting.....some comments totally MISS the point. We women do not realize the power we have by HAVING VAGINAS.....and GIVING BIRTH....or stopping birth. What if women were to ENGAGE this power to choose...to not give birth for a year. What if instead we focus on birthing a new EARTH. Peaceful, respectful, playful and authentically engaged in WE the PEOPLE. An ocean of women and men who value bringing children into a world where they can be certain they will have clean water, safe food to eat, and homes to live in that are reasonable to pay for....what if we women shut our legs and said NO MORE BABIES until we change course...taxing those corporations that rape the Earth of her resources and pollute our waters....taxing with a broad base tax for the damage it cost to harvest and kill waters of fish, what about ......so many things, all walks of life would be affected. It could be the 'voice heard round the globe'.....what could we envision and create if we really do hold the power to change the world ~ as WE ARE ALL ONE. Think about it. Dream on it. What do you desire for women who come after you? Now is the time to lay the path way for them...all our children's children...men, women, beast, fish and fowl...the Earth and her trees, with the honey and her bees.....We can't live without these. We can't be free if someone ( a male especially) is trying hold dominion over my body, of which he knows nothing about.......so glad to have courageous women like you, Lacey! thank-you!
Too many of you are missing the point that this poem is about rape. And the seriousness of how rape is in Texas , stop worrying about everything else in this poem and just listen and take everything.
its not about rape, its about the fact that a government of men are trying to take away the rights of people with vaginas. rape is mentioned, but its not the major point being made
So forget about the fact that this woman is appropriating and mocking an entire culture and it's history by wearing dreadlocks and lets pay attention to her white feminist song that will probably only benefit other white women?
Zeinab Abdisalad she is not insulting a culture by deciding to have dreadlocks you sound ridiculous this is about equality to women all women of every race and culture just because the speaker just so happens to be white does not mean it us racist you need to actually think about what you are writing it is wrong and honestly stupid
Some people in the comments pay more attention to her appearance than to what she is saying...this is just another example how in the world your appearance matters more than what you say.
It's a hairstyle. Get over it. She's not "mocking an entire culture." Get over yourselves. It's her hair to do what she pleases. That hairstyle doesn't belong to one single culture. Many other cultures can and do wear that hairstyle. Chill out and open your eyes to more than appearance. ALSO, this poem isn't "probably only [going to] benefit other white women." This does not only apply to "white women." This applies to ALL women who have felt violated and unable to choose what to do with their bodies. I am not pro- or anti-abortion. If you wish to do what you do, it's your body: do what you do. This is literally you saying, "only white women are raped or considered subordinates." When we all know well that that is NOT true, whatsoever. She's trying to reach out and speak about her frustration with the government disallowing rights to WOMEN -- not just white women, black women, hispanic women, WOMEN in general. So, stop trying to reel in her appearance, which is irrelevant, and saying she's only speaking for one portion of a large group of an larger group.
Must we all dig around this video to invent criticisms and entirely bypass the point of the good she is trying to do? If nothing else, at least recognize her beautiful talent. I find it a little frustrating that the majority of the comments on a feminist poem attack the appearance of the poet, as if she doesn't have the right to do whatever she damn well pleases with her hair - or are we all just too busy prattling on our keyboards to listen?
No need to change how she delivers it. She made it her way. She doesn't have to change her delivery techniques. It is perfect the way it is, its hers . And she made that known
What does her hair have to do anything with her poem? Listen with your ears, and look with your heart instead of your eyes. If you're fixated on someone's appearance more than the power of their words, then close your eyes.
She makes a great point and I admire that, but she's contradicting on what she's saying. She says that Perry has no right to speak about something that he has no idea about, yet she has dreadlocks. Dreadlocks is not just a hairstyle. It is a custom tied in deeply with black culture. In fact, Rastafarians make it necessary to have followers wear dreadlocks. She's taking from a culture she knows nothing about.
who tf cares if she's white and also had dreadlocks. for one, dreadlocks aren't a colored thing and dreadlocks are not dirty--if they were, they couldn't be dreadlocks, dreadlocks need to be clean to be able to lock up--and two, you're all looking past the fucking point of what she's saying.
Lacey Roop and Andrea Gibson get me every time :')
one of my favorite slam poems. she is amazing!

this is absolutely amazing.
Amazingly fantastic!!
Yes. Just yes.
She was amazing. I loved the line, "with heavy shoulders and tear stained cheeks, looking for a hand to hold." I have to learn to write slam poetry. Such passion.

This was just beautiful

Zeinab Abdisalad dreads aren't specifically black culture. Many native cultures have a strong tradition of hairstyles like that
Appropriating "black culture" or not: why is this an issue?!
I totally agree with you Kristen. Its dispicable how women are treated on a daily basis even by fellow women.
Lmaoo white feminism is really annoying, I'm not arguing about gender roles or patriarchy, I'm arguing about racism and how blind you guys are to it.
Great poem! Loved it!
Amazing women in Texas! Makes my heart proud.
great poem
Incredible
Bless. Yes.
This is incedible.
Go lacy :D
I love you

Wow...
Her words matter more than her dreads, guys.

SNEAKSIMS FELICIANO well, it technically is cultural appropriation
Sarah Apelian yeah I guess

Beautiful poem, needs work on the delivery
No need to change how she delivers it. She made it her way. She doesn't have to change her delivery techniques. It is perfect the way it is, its hers . And she made that known
Jinx At Heart Im talking about how she stumbled with words
