▶︎ What is Kagoshima famous for?
Kagoshima is famous for once being home to the powerful and wealthy Shimizu samurai clan, as well as its strong links to the western world through the introduction of Christianity via Francis Xavier, and is said to be the starting place of Japan’s industrial revolution. Nowadays, Kagoshima is most famous as being the home of Japan’s most active volcano, Sakurajima, which can be seen blowing out hot plumes of smoke and ash from all around Kagoshima city. Due to the fertile land surrounding the volcano, Kagoshima is also well-known for its delicious food such as sweet potatoes and the traditional Japanese alcohol made from them, imo-jochu (sweet potato shochu)! Kagoshima Prefecture also expands into the sea beyond Kyushu towards Okinawa, where you’ll find the beautiful “Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke Island”, Yakushima (one of Japan’s first UNESCO World Heritage Sites), and the subtropical paradise, Amami-Oshima.
▶︎ Looking for recommendations for what to do in Kagoshima?
Kagoshima is one of Kyushu, Japan’s most popular cities and has become increasingly famous globally for its stunning natural scenery and drinking and street food scene. Visitors can take a ferry to the nearby Sakurajima volcano for an onsen day trip or see the volcanic activity from afar at the Shiroyama Park observation point. As well as soaking up a bit of scenery and Japanese history, it’s possible to spend an entire day just sampling all of the varieties of shochu produced in Kagoshima all in one location by trying out a “senbero” experience like we did!
▶︎ What is “Senbero”?
Senbero is short for the Japanese “千円でべろべろに酔える”, literally meaning “get drunk with 1000 yen”. The senbero drinks deal at Yatai Mura (a collection of Japanese bars serving regional food and drink next to Kagoshima Chuo Station) makes it the best place to eat and drink in Kagoshima City. At each of the izakaya pubs in Yatai Mura, you can select 3 drinks and one small food dish from a range of local food which have been selected to pair perfectly with alcohol. Senbero is the best way to try out Kagoshima’s speciality shochu made with satsuma sweet potatoes and some of Japan’s tastiest street food made with local ingredients like “kurabuta (Kagoshima black pork), satsuma oranges, and Sakurajima chicken bred and raised within reach of Japan’s most active volcano!

焼酎は強いのでストレートで飲まないで他の物（水、お湯、炭酸水など）で割って飲んだほうが良いです。
鹿児島県は最近、静岡県を抜いてお茶の生産量が日本一になりました。鰻の養殖量も日本一です。
薩摩地鶏は比内地鶏、名古屋コーチンと並んで日本三大地鶏の１つです。
ご夫婦とも、美味しそうに飲み、食べますね！！最高です。鹿児島に行きたくなりました、、。

昔、種子島に仕事とで言ったときに鹿児島からＹＳ－１１に乗ったんですが、火口のほぼ真上を飛んでましたね。
それと焼酎は何といっても「薩摩白波」、種子島で食堂っぽい所に入ったら、ビールと焼酎しか置いてなかったです。
ヨーロッパは寒いからお酒を飲んでずーっと昔から体を温めて生きてきたんだと思う。そういう人が生き残りやすかったし・・・、なので細胞にアルコール分解能力が備わっているんだと思う。

枕崎〜加世田は海沿いを走り、途中見える東シナ海の景色は綺麗ですよ。

鹿児島で食だと...酒寿司かな😃日本酒を使った押し寿司(...ちらし寿司？)というところでしょうか。アルコール入ってますから要注意ですね😅あとは、車エビの干物で出汁を取ったお雑煮は、食べる価値ありかと思います😊が...酒寿司はご馳走なのでコストが、それにお雑煮は季節外れかな😅おいしい食が色々とありますから楽しんでくださいね♪

We really liked Kagoshima as well so cheap and beautiful. From glass making to wood craving they have so much artisans stuff as well. Next time take the long ferry in your van to yakushima ^_^. Ps we enjoyed the black pork as well grilled on a hot volcanic black stone.

It's mind-blowing to realize the landscape was altered so dramatically within a single human lifetime. My maternal grandmother was born 27 years before that island joined the rest of Japan. People her age would have memories of it as an island!
