- Hamline professors are now calling on the university's president to resign in the wake of controversy brought on when an adjunct professor lost out on a job opportunity after she showed historical paintings of Muhammad in an art history class.

First of all, why does she need to warn anybody? This is an old Islamic painting. It’s not a cartoon or offensive. It’s situations like this is why we can no longer have discussion and dialogue at universities. Honestly if people can’t handle freedom of thought and expression just need to leave and go where they have similar values.
If freedom of speech is violating the values of a whole religion, is it really self-expression? If I were to come up to you, not respect your values and violating your rights, and call it freedom of thought, will you feel the same?
@@joyulayto doesn’t matter what I feel. It’s whether laws were broken. In regards to the art professors, what did she do wrong? If anything she went out of her way of giving advance warning. She did nothing wrong. You might as well take this similar paintings from public galleries. It’s stories like this make Islam look bad. At the end of the day, whatever country one lives in, laws of the country should be respected before ones’s personal feelings.
Full support to the professor. Kick out the president. Boycott Hamline university.

I hope this professor sues the pants off that university. This is ridiculous.
I have mixed views about this situation because for one, if a professor was fired for violating Christianity, I think more people would support it. Hamline is technically a Christian school, but they do have a diverse student body and several Muslim students, so I can see why it would be upsetting to some students that they have to choose between missing out on part of their educational experience and upholding their religious values. This is technically legal since Hamline is a private school, so therefore teaching religion-related curriculum does not violate the establishment clause. I don’t necessarily think this one specific painting was crucial to the class, and other less controversial paintings that use the same artistic techniques could easily have been used in its place if the teacher valued inclusion. I recognize that the teacher did warn students, which is good, but it still seems a little wrong to me that students had to miss part of the lesson. I think maybe firing the teacher was an extreme reaction, unless they did ask her to try and be more inclusive with her lessons and she refused. I don’t know the whole story, but I do think people who are angry about so called free speech violations should consider that this is an educational institute, and simply showing a different painting that is less harmful to students really isn’t an infringement on free speech, since the school was paying the teacher to teach certain topics and she chose to go against that in a way that was harmful to the tuition-paying students. No one is stopping her from going out and speaking her mind. I think people commenting about how the student who complained should be expelled are definitely taking things too far, and I think the people claiming their free speech is at risk because of this incident are uneducated on the matter and just want something to be mad about. Overall I do think firing the teacher was the wrong move, but I don’t think it would have been wrong for the school to ask her to make her lessons inclusive to all students, especially since those students are paying her to teach them.
