Do you think the D500 is still a good camera?
Thomas F they said it was their recommendation for people that can't spend $3800 on a body.
Basically they are the same, but the d850 does better when you can really get close up.
Thanks
Tony & Chelsea Northrup I just took a picture the other day of one of those spiders from early in this video. Due to my budget, I use only a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, therefore, not nearly as impressive as this d850. I watched your review of the nikon d5600 and I'm aching to get the all in one bundle off of walmart.com.
Nicolas Morris get a refurb , save money and get some good glass.
And here I'm sitting with my D5300 and my mouth watering :-D
Jan-Frederik Schulte don't worry about the specs too much, some of my racing shots with a d5200 were featured on magazines. D850 is killer; but Its not like suddenly your d5300 becomes an iphone lol
Buy a D850 with credit, and commit to making the payments each month on time. Sacrifice something else that you were spending money on. The wonderful experiences you'll have along with the satisfaction will be worth cost.
Probably because you don't have the lenses and the will to do that, this summer i rented a 200-500 5.6 for one week and i got amazing shoots with my 5500, pretty sure you can do the same with the 5300. ;)
I have the Tamron 150-600 5-6.3, so I do have the glass ;-) And I'm getting great results, this is just wishful thinking. I'm mostly annoyed with lacking frame rate and especially RAW buffer, and the AF system could of course always be better.
I started with 5300, took some of my best work with it. I'm at the d750 level now, with much better glass... it just takes time build.
First time I've heard the point that in DX mode the focus points cover the whole range. I think that's an important point as you can switch to DX and have complete range for action shots. Viewfinder image in DX was helpful too. Good point about seeing what is coming in to frame. Helpful; thank you. :-)
The D500 is 10FS? so wouldn't that be better for birds? plus with the extra crop reach?
We really need a review of the D7500, i think it's long overdue :)
Best Wildlife camera I can't afford! Amazing do all camera though, Nikon pulled out the stops on this one.
Exciting to hear these specific details. Thank you!
Unbelievable detail and sharpness.
Let's not forget the fact that you are using a zoom lens on your D850 while a prime on your 5Ds
Have you seen his test of prime vs zoom. Plus a d850 is much better than a 5dsr
This camera looks awesome!
APSC are great for open land wildlife, however, for forest birds and animals, full frame sensor has advantage with better low light, 50% of bird shots are in shades..
Very true what you said, however, the more light advantage is better when you fill the frame. If you shoot DX, you should get the same ISO/low light performance as a D500.
Love this overview, especially like you showing that DX mode in camera view
05:31 - Gorgeous detail!
The last shot where Tony recovers the detail in the bird's eye - it's astounding!
a really nice channel you have. I am just a 17 year old boy, but I really like your videos. I am saving money for a new camera now because my d200 has lots of dead pixels now and already 150.000 shots on it. My dream is to have a better camera one day, but to this day I have to save money. With only 42€/Month that will be a struggle, but I will make this somehow.
I have already D750 but this D850 take my breath away !!!
I have the D750 and been using it for 1.5 years now, but in wildlife photography, the d850 is alot better because of the MP and AF advantage.
How much ll come indian rupees d850
Notification squad is here! ❤️😂
Chelsea Northrup 😄
hey that's Flossys statement haha
Ohh my goodness .. I am so in Love with you 😍
Chelsea & Tony great review as usual, your effort is appreciated.
Why nobody(except for Sony Artisans) is talking about Sony a9?, it is a camera that is just like 2 months older than Nikon D850. Do you think the a9 is in the same league of 1DM-II, or D5?
The Sensor of the new Nikon D850 is not made by Sony, it is 100% confirmed!!!!.....Now take that SonyFanboys
Excellent review! I will stick with my D5 for wildlife photography, and the D810A for higher resolution and astro-photography for now. As you mentioned, investing in lenses seems a good alternative
Can't wait for the portrait and landscape reviews!
Fascinating. Excellent insights, especially the full frame view when using DX mode. Tony is the best.
yoo what is this, these high quality contents coming so fast =D
It's what they do. When you devote most of your time to something you're able to come up with high quality product.
35 dislikes? Seriously, what's not to like about this video! Great job guys.
John Gray Canon and Sony owners..
It's a mistake to think that 20 percent more megapixels equals 20 percent more of focal length. When your focal length gets X times as long, your subject area will be X to the power of two times as big. Thanks for your useful videos.
i like this channel... i'm a nikon guy (two nikon cameras.. no budget to switch.. etc etc...) i have the typical canon hate just for show... but having honest cross product reviews is cool.. (even if i do own a D850!)
will the D850 shoot 9 fps with an after market grip?
looks like a winner to me.....
I do like the idea of getting rid of my D750 and D500 to work with one body. I found myself using the D500 for most things but couldnt bring myself to get rid of the full frame. Its just nice to have a full frame for low light/indoor stuff and portrait shooting.
On the tiny side of wildlife photography, the D850 makes even spiders smile. I love mine and it's bug season down here in Oz!
D850 looks like a dream camera, for sure. One point, though, isn't it still easier to get a focus point on a distant subject with a D500 with the subject being larger in the viewfinder?
Tony that lens mount seems pretty sturdy, I see you are holding it with one hand on the camera with the lens dangling. I heard the lens mount and body and shutter are reinforced, is that your findings. Both of you are making this camera harder to resist purchasing, great work as always.
If you still recommend the D500, how about the D7500? It shoots a little slower and doesn't have the D5 AF, but still, it seems like a good deal for the price. It's smaller, lighter and has the handy U1/U2 settings. Still uses the D500 sensor, so IQ should be the same.
Nice review. Not sure if it's my headset but that hiss sound is crazy.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the full reviews. I thing that would probably cause me to switch; how does the AF in video mode perform.
Basically a full frame D500 with more megapixels! I don't know if I'd trade out my D500 for this
It's almost as if this video was specially made for me, except I don't really shoot wildlife, not that I don't want to, but the nearest wildlife to me is an awful public transport ride away, and I so want to write a huge rant about that, but that's not gonna add to anything :-),.... maybe I should get a car instead of the D850.
Will have to wait for your landscape and travel reviews, but there's no rush.
Thanks for a great earlyish review, keep up the good work!
Coming from a D800, the only thing I lament over so far is the material of the grip. The D800 had a softer, more rubbery grip, while the D850 feels less... grippy. On the other hand, the grip overall is still better on the D850, thanks to being significantly deeper.
The battery grip isn't as deep as on the body itself though, but still just a tiiiiiny bit deeper than it was on the D800, though again, with a different material, where the D800 grip felt better. The dial to screw it to the body also feels rather cheep for the D850 - very plasticy and much smaller.
(The D800 grip and body were both made in Japan, the D850 body was made in Thailand - just like D7100, btw - while the battery grip for D850 is made in China.)
getting really excited by this one.
Excellent review , looking for the rest of the series
For wildlife I love the Sony a99ii, 11.6fps with hybrid AF at 42mpix, plus its video is phenomenal, not forgetting live view evf 😉 having said that, the d850 is a tempting offering, just not quite and a99ii, but neither is the a99ii not quite a d850. Superb camera from Nikon.
I find the under-discussed issue of "cropability" very interesting when it comes to evaluating bodies and lenses. I don't have an unlimited budget and shoot with a Canon 6D. I own the 135mm F2 and shoot almost exclusively for the Web. I find that the photos I take with the 135 and FF body are amazingly croppable - they look gorgeous even when cropped drastically; somewhat more so when shot in daylight than under tungsten or fluorescent lighting. The 135 gives me a sneaky feeling, like I'm getting away with something by shooting stage events at F2 and 1/800 and having the photos look wonderful. Yeah, who needs a long 2.8 stabilized zoom? I wonder if croppability would be an interesting subject for a future video.
P.S. Tony, have you tried using Camera Raw for shadow recovery? Much better than Lightroom. The Camera Raw filter is very useful when I'm working on Tiffs or jpegs and need to tweak shadows.
I still really wish it had dual XQD card slots but Jesus Cripes, Nikon produced a camera I'm actually excited about in the D850. Very nice video as always, thanks.
Ton & Chel, where are you shooting this? My wife and I are looking for good places in CT and at the shore. I like that you have a blind there, assuming the subjects are in 'range', not requiring too much cropping. She has a 500 with 500mm and I have a 750 with a 600mm.
Tony There is no way that having 25% more pixels will get you 20% more detail. Taking the square root you'll only get 12.2% more pixels linearly. Therefore assuming an optically perfect lens that is perfectly focused on a perfectly flat perfectly parallel object with the camera held perfectly steady you'd still only get12.2% more detail. Real world it will always be somewhat less.
Thanks Tony, great detailed video, nice comparison to Canon, Sony and the D500 Nikon
How are you finding swapping back to viewfinder blackout after shooting so much lately with the a9?
he almost named this camera best for wildlife, so...
Great Review, Thank you! are you doing separate reviews? like street photography, landscape , studio, portrait , etc
We're doing some as separate segments, because people are pretty eager to find out more info.
yay.. thanks tony! i guess this is my perfect camera for wildlife.
Tony & Chelsea Northrup did tony swiftly mention the video af was "fine"?! I was not hoping for better LiveView AF but please detail that next time.
You should try and bring A99ii to the comparison to see how D850 really stacks up.
Akash Rana exactly! Sony already brought out almost exactly this camera 😂
Ahahaha
A99ii shutter sounds more lovely like little birds wing fly,
D850 mirror + metal shutter sounds like Giant Eagle crashing to a wall.
I know this is about wildlife shooting. However, in one of your videos covering the D850 I would like to see the photo shift feature in action with postproduction.
Thanks you two! a very fine video... Some beautiful Images too!
Thank you for another great video. A little surprised that Tony was disappointed not to be able to look through the viewfinder while recording movies. Can you do that on any DSLR?
Questions for either of you!
"Quick Disclaimer a lot of questions and ideas but hope you can read and help me! Huge fan! "
So a quick question.... what are the best uses for the Nikon D850? I'm a drone pilot I use a DJI Inspire pro. and I know new ones out... but quickly on that topic my next upgrade will be to the DJI M200 or M600 or is it 800 with the 6 rotor 6 batteries system? Anyways back to the camera question... so the uses of this D850? And further more the best lenses for each category " what this camera is best suited or best at". And within again that what lenses would you use to not only suit the job but that would optimize the cameras MP's to so to speak get the best use out of the frames? And this camera doesn't have the stabilizer built in so if shooting on the move or so on without it having the stabilizer it would be shooting or be best to shoot at a lower MP ? Or? And same topic would you say stabilized lenses "optic" would fix this or maybe just help it a little? And for video would you pick this over a GH5? How would this compare to a GH5 and how would it compare to a Sony Alpha A9 in terms of shutter speed and in terms of buffer and so on?
I'm looking for a camera possibly to use on the go shoots " weddings , general photography-video as well, portraits, landscape/cars other stills, and last and I probably know the response to this question but can or is it possibly to put this on a drone like the DJI M600 ? Or would a GH5 be better? Along with stabilizer units out like - MOvI made by free-fly Link-store.freeflysystems.com/collections/movi-pro
And one last question..... what would you recommend is the best drone and best camera out or coming out ? Along with what are your thoughts on what's next where things are heading with the DSLR/mirror-less market? And with that I'll end the long list of questions.... for now.... In advance thank you for reading this! And thank you for producing the most informative and detail oriented and vast not only knowledge but experience advice and reviews you provide us! I love learning from you and always feel like it's a one stop shop I don't need to do more research through forums and other vids I feel like you always hit the nail on the coffin and again your the best!
And maybe a video in regards to price ranges for jobs and so on. From low to high and average for photography and videoagraphy/Drones "footage/stills/video/drone". And start up ranges per job class and what gear per job class you would need ranging from average JOE to medium level to PRO. And maybe go in to what makes someone a true Professional in photography and what gear they should or might have? As you are a Professional sure this one would be detailed but none the less a easy question for u! Gear from computers to cameras to stand and so on..... again sorry for long post prob guessing you might not have the time to , or care to?/ time to read my ramble/ questionnaire... and if possible if I could pick ur brain through email or phone? Emails- Ardenritzel@gmail.com hope to see vids or here from you! My wife is big in to portraits and loves ur videos as well!
And as you can relate to... before I buy anything I research for days before being able to decide and I thrive on achieving the best and have a never ending drive to "Do better/ always learning and progressing in my passion/career/life.
Again hope to see vids of maybe some of my questions or if I hear from you through email I provided above. Would make my year to be able to talk and learn from you!
thanks tony & chelsea,,, please make a video shooting review for D850 too,,, i trust and love your reviews
I hope to get my hands on this one someday.
DAM! that is about the best video I have ever seen!
Excellent camera and review but Im not liking the shutter noise
Another terrific review. Thank you!
Tony, I have never heard much about the Nikon wildlife lenses that you use. You have great reveiws of the Canon glass, but what about the Nikon? Could you give us a review of your Nikon wildlife lenses? Thanks!
Nikon 200-500 man, its a winner, only $1400 and very high quality. Yes, the $10,000 Nikon 500mm prime is better, but that's if you have $10,000 to spend to gain 1 stop of light.
marvelous. just one thing; the shutter is quite loud? or.
Awesome! Could you maybe shoot some astrophotography with it? Would love to see some 45 megapixel starry goodness!
Definitely planning on that!
Thanks, I am so going to get this camera!
Often you are right, but this time, wrong. Sony A9 is unmatched. Wife had D850, sold it for A9. I had Canon 5DS and 7DII. Sold then for an A9 and A7RIII. Never regretted the move.
I like you both more and more. Great channel
Cheers guys nice video as always .. in the thumbnail it looks like Chelsea is holdin a hunting rifle with a bad ass scope..
Crisp Review! Thanks :)
Thanks for the wonderful review. Like Seinfeld once said,...."If only I had worked harder"
nice comparison, but seeing as you are saying about the "viewfinder" experience in video, how about a compare with the fujifilm G X 50 s (a medium format camera- ~50 MP camera with the advantage of video and a mirror less cameras full time live view composition feature ). in light of the comparisons you made re the wildlife scenario this seems a good contender to match with.
Looks awesome.
Nice review as usual. So Tony, you called this the best wildlife Camera ever. My question is as follows; For bird photographers (like me) who want birds in flight, its tough to do it on tripods, so handheld gives us best results. With the D850 what handheld Nikon lens can you use to give you a go reach for small birds? I currently use the Olympus OMD EM 1 Mk II with the 300mm and a 1.5 teleconverter which essentially gives me 840mm handheld all day with 20mgp RAW images. For a similar reach of at least 600mm, what lens will give me equivalent picture quality with the D850 for small birds?
You mentioned, what I was gonna ask/say, is how if you are always cropping, the FF image here will be the same basically as a crop sensor.
But, wouldn't a crop sensor always get a closer/more detailed image? Or at least matched? You'd always have to crop to match the APSC FOV. If you are limited by the lens min. focusing distance, I'd think the Crop sensor will get same/more detail than high MP FF? Well, depending on the FF MP/AA Filter/etc.
Seems like main benefit of FF for wildlife, is wider FOV, and if not cropping, then the image should be cleaner/better, I guess?
+mLichy911 generally, yes (see sdp.io/density) but in this case the density is exactly the same, so cropping the FF gives you equivalent results.
I always find it hard to maintain a level shot when filming hand held video in live view. An EVF would be better for videography.
Awesome review again Tony!
Did you saw the new Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2? Could you please make a review?
Thank you guys...I really like your videos. I´d like you do a comparison between the Sony A9 and this Nikon D850. I know that it´s not that easy but if you can do it would be great. I´d like to switch from Nikon to Sony and i´d buy the A9 because i think it has more video features than the Nikon D850 (I do both video and photography) but i want to be sure because that change represent me changing all my lenses. Congratulations for your work. Greetings from and Argentinian guy in Barcelona!!
I would absolutely love to have the D850, it would be a huge update from the D5200. But unfortunately my budget is rather limited and that likely breaks the deal entirely. Any recommended options I could go for instead?
Lenses owned atm:
- Sigma 50mm 1:1.4 DG HSM
- Sigma 17-70mm 1:2.8-4 DC
- Tamron AF 70-300mm LD Di
Nice shots taken !
I still believe the D500 is an amazing camera. I already have about 6 grand's worth (Pounds Sterling) of fast glass. Upgrade to a D850, or spend the money on more glass, equipment etc.? To me, it is a no-brainer. I am not criticising the video though. I adore new technology and love reading spec sheets and watching video reviews on all the latest tech and the T&C N channel is as good as you can get.. And no, it's not because Chelsea's hot! Ok, ok.. Maybe a little bit.. Seriously though. Great video as always..
I think you forgot to include the cost of the battery charger in the 9fps costs, also just 40 lossless compressed raws at 7fps? That is very disappointing, I thought Nikon said 50... :(
Tony and Chelsea.Great update on the D850. An off question. What do you think of google photos to free up storage while on the go? Reviews are great but, my concern is I believe google downgrades the photo when storing and you can never get that back? Not sure if that is fact.
Hi Tony and Chelsea , I was wondering if you would do a detailed Comparison of d850 and 5D IV with same lens and settings . Would love to see the differences between them in terms of Image quality on constant lens and ISO , Dynamic range , Auto Focus , Size and Built, also Video aspect
Hey Tony, you don't have to bag Canon every time you when review a non-Canon product. I was here to see you opinions on the D850 in regards on photographing wildlife. The title didn't say Canon 5dSR vs Nikon D850. I'm somewhat disappointed in you as a mentor.
I have to cross-compare different cameras and brands during camera reviews... I'm here to help people who are making buying choices or considering upgrading. I've been using the 5DS-R religiously since it was released... we're definitely not "bagging" Canon by stating facts like the frame rate is lower.
I'm waiting for my d850 so watching your vid's on the D850 is like eating an Oreo cookie..........I want another one
HI TONY AND CHELSEA! I started shooting wildlife three years ago, for which I bought a Canon 70D and the 400mm f5.6L, thanks to your reviews back in the day ;) For my first camera-lens setup, I couldn't be more satisfied. However, I've been itching to upgrade from the 70D for almost a year now (the dawn/dusk low-light performance kills me). I've been holding out in hopes that the 7DIII might bring Canon bodies back into the competition (30 megapixel crop sensor for that reeeeach? 4k video? sensor stabilization?), and would allow me to work with the 400mm f5.6L for a while longer until I can drop the big bills on some top-tier super telephoto glass. I also have the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 art, which would be nice to keep. BUT, that D850 though! Do I keep faith in Canon? Or do I drop 'em like Nikon just did the mic!? Thanks Chelsea and Tony!
Cam Hurd 30mp crop sensor would be too high a pixel density for the 400 f5.6. You might get some improvement but not much.
I will be collecting my first full frame camera today !! Nikon D850 of course ✌️
Should I buy New Tamron 24-70mm G2 lens instead of 24-120mm Kit Lens ?
Any other lens for Landscape & Travel photography !!
nice video as always - great job Nikon -
As always, really appreciate the review. Would love to see specific recommendations for glass. 15ish-24ish, 24-70, 70-200 and 200-400 ish ranges. I just ordered the camera and am fully switching from Canon and need to replace all my L glass. I have already ordered the new Tamron 24-70 G2.
Hi - Enjoy your reviews. -Just purchased the D500 for the shutter release speed, the auto focus system and the buffer. I enjoy taking birds in flight. My D750 takes exceptional pictures but the buffer fills fast. Its early but I've noticed that the detail in the D500 doesn't match the D750 full frame. To get it all do I need to jump to the D5?
How about doing a review of the major cell services out there. The ones we might use with our IPads or for turning our phone into a hot spot. You always cut through the clutter with your reviews and there certainly is a lot of smoke and mirrors with the providers. I know its not photography per say but it's something that we all use, be it iCloud syncing, sending out photos for customer proofing or uploading images to social media.
So this D850 took the good things from D500 and built upon them? Nice, I am sure the professional photographers will be celebrating right now.
Ordered D850 within 3 hours of release... still waiting... always wanted to go to smaller camera (lots of street work) so I took the plunge.... cancelled the D850 ordered A7R III 2 minutes after open.... just wish Sony would catch up with lenses...
exotic! is it worth upgrading from D810?
The 850 almost seems like a dream come true. I was wondering if yo have or will be trying the body with
Nikons' 200-500 , 5.6. I'd be curious how fast and accurate the auto focus is with this combo.
All these shots were with the 200-500. Focusing seems great.
nice review
Can we live with older cameras..... whichever is ? 5..9..14... fps do make a difference, of course! but ... It is not camera , its you how to take the momento to take a photo!! My 800 is still giving me , joyfull moments !
Great video, could you give me more explanation about the DX mode as I don't understand it. I want to try this function on my Nikon D610. Thanks in advance.
Are you guys doing an in depth tutorial of the D850 anytime soon ?
Bismillah
Great video. Thanks. Where were you shooting at?
Is the autofocus and tracking better than the D500 overall? I shoot primarily birds and want upgrade my camera. I do also love walking around the city as well as landscape.
Great review so far. What are you doing about a charger for the grip battery - are there any cheaper alternatives to the D5 battery charger?
Yeah you can buy a cheap charger for it... like $20 or $30.
THAMK YOU VERY MUCH
