I don't comment much, but this video was to the point and packed with info. Well done. Only way it could have been better is actually showing how to do everything.

At first I thought it was the beginning of a Letterkenny episode. Great video. Thanks for the good info

Excellent video! I also think actually showing how to do everything would make it even better. This guy is great, though!

Good tips! I'd add that having some slack in the line will prevent (or at least lessen) the cable from snapping from trees swaying in the wind. Had my clothes line too tight at first and it snapped from the tree swaying.

Good tips, I didnt consider the bend radius threshold of the vinyl coated wire....

Most people are doing a temp summer thing or a party and they stay up after the party. You have to Lighten up dude Read the code on temp lighting and then relax. This coming from a 35 yr master electrician. Sling them best you can and replace them every couple years. 100’ of good quality LED lights $60
Cant wait for your holiday lighting tips.

Thank you! I just hung a set on my pergola with c clamps. They look great. If a tree falls on the lights, my pergola won’t survive.

most kits seem to have 1/16 wire coated to 1/8. doesnt seem strong enough for heavy duty lights. to be clear u used 1/8 uncoated, and when coated its 3/16 in diameter?

If I could add a bit of info when it comes to the cable clamps you always want to put the saddle on the tension side of the cable not the end that loops over and ends the way they taught me in rigging school was never saddle a dead horse

Is there a light hanging kit you recommend?

I’ve never used any of the marketed “cafe light hanging kits” my recommendation is pretty much one of the wire rope kits sold at the home improvement stores and a turnbuckle, they are usually 25’ if you need more length you can hook a couple together or just get a custom length cut. As for carabiners, you just want an aluminum to keep rust and cost down, stainless also works but costs more.

Great video! 1) how high did you mount your lights? And 2) do you have a recommended kit for mounting? I've noticed Amazon has so many. Looking to hang over a deck. Thank you!!

I believe mine are around the 12ft mark, but to me that’s really personal preference unless you are in a commercial traffic area like a shopping center walkway or something, otherwise just out of reach and if you know something gets carried through the area, make sure it’s not going to hit. Lower feels more intimate and is good for small quantity’s and smaller spaces, big spaces with a lot of lights gain from higher placement. As for my cable/kits, pretty much all of mine came from big box Home Depot/Lowe’s but that was just convenient and I felt I could trust the quality of the cable a little more than some of the Amazon sellers and the like.

@@DemonicAnimatronic awesome thank you for the info! I have the Costco ones that dangle a bit and was leaning towards 10ft. And good idea with picking the items individually from Home Depot vs an Amazon box. I'll probably do that as well. Thanks for the advice!!

I have some left over T316 stainless steel 1/8” cable (1x19 type) that is uncoated which I just used for my deck railing because it was supposed to be the most durable and suitable for the project. For these string lights, is there any real reason you can’t use uncoated cable like this? Every string light video mentions vinyl coated and I’d like to know if there’s a safety reason not to use uncoated such as the cables attracting lightning strikes. Other than that, I don’t see what the problem would be as it’s the most corrosion resistant cable and has 2500 lb breaking strength. Anyone have some insight here?

Given how far lightning has already come I’m not sure a vinyl coating would stop it if it wanted to hit the cable ;) I think the big reason would be that steel cable can act almost like a saw if it rubs against something. The vinyl helps add a layer to protect agains this chafing. Whether you would actually encounter an issue, I can’t say, would depend on how much things move, how close the cable is to things etc.

I can’t really see how this is nagging, is that the word you meant to use. I do not believe it is persistently harassing? Now if your significant other is nagging you to fix your lights after viewing this, I unfortunately cannot change that.
