@@russell2890 I’m just saying I don’t see a real practical value in learning another language. Unless if I work internationally, I’m going to be stuck in a cubicle in an office where most people speak English. Also, you really think anybody is going to really care that you speak more than one language? That excitement will be gone in about a week.

he did not say what the title of this video claims he said. TMZ, ya'll honestly should change the title. There are barely 2Mil Latvian speakers in the world. We care deeply about our country and our language -- and Kristaps clearly indicated he does, too.
BUT -- for the "outside" world -- srsly -- how many people want to learn Latvian? he's right -- you can go to Latvia and speak Latvian -- and it is absolutely wonderful.
I speak 3.5 languages, and I can honestly say that Latvian, as a language, is kind of like a Ferrari, and English, is well, i'll just say: rickety.
The Latvian language is amazing. You can do a lot with prefixes and suffixes -- and you can move words around and change meaning with intonation. Because of that, you can express yourself succinctly, quickly, and clearly. Add phonetic spelling and clear grammar -- and you have quite the effective language.
Explain the spelling of the word "thoroughly." You don't really have a lot of issues like that in Latvian -- so while the language can be considered "complex," it is complex in a clear, effective, and useful way...
Anyway, Kristaps didn't hate on his language or country, he simply stated that most people scoff at the idea of even considering learning Latvian because: wtf is "Latvia" even? Where the F is that? 2 million people -- are you kidding me? What is that -- a suburb with its own language?
That's the kind of mess Latvians hear almost every day. Where is that? What is that? Is that even a country? You guys have your own language? etc. etc. etc.
The reason the TMZ title is abrasive, is because Latvians have, for a long time, been under direct threat of losing their language, country, and history. Latvians are a white-skinned native people of Europe -- who actually have a lot in common w African Americans.

I believe Kristaps did not mean it in a bad context at all, just wanted to show his funny side and joke in "American way". Clearly he should not have done that. Small nations like Latvia can take it really personally when someone jokes about their nation, language etc.
He will have plenty of possibilities to make his nation proud. Playing for the national team some day, is one of the ways to do it. Good luck!

+shamanis29 He's singlehandedly putting Latvia on the map right now so he's like the favored son of the country right now so he can say whatever he wants! But Latvian would be relatively useless compared to languages that are spoken in multiple countries (like English, French, Spansh, etc)

For you it might seem okay, for majority of Latvian people no.

    • @nextbirt
      @nextbirt 9 років тому +3

+YEL DARB You can't really compare that. He comes from the small nation, that most people on Earth haven't heard about and each on of those nations people support him at fullest. He doesn't only represent himself, he represents his whole country to the world. doubt that you represent Jersey to the whole world.
Our country - Latvia has had more tragic history than most countries, but that haven't hold us back to be known to the rest of the world. Kristaps Porziņģis is just another example.
For you Kristaps Porziņģis is a New York "Knicks" basketball player that is helping the team, scoring points, playing good etc. For us Kristaps Porziņģis is a symbol for the nation that coming from small country like Latvia - doesn't limit us to the world. He inspire us and let other people know about Latvia. We are proud to be Latvian's and we support him in everyday possible.
Due to our nations history and other circumstances, most of us have had to leave the country to live abroad (including myself) therefore scattering us across the globe. Its a tragedy in some ways, but in others - every world known reference about Latvia in a positive way, makes us proud and where ever we are, but statements like - Latvian language is a waste of time from a professional NBA player, doesn't make us proud, it feel like a spit in our faces tbh.
As scattered as we are, our nations spirit is always united. We are proud from were we come from and what we represent. We are willing to fight for it and support anyone who shows the spirit to do the same. Kristaps Porziņģis have proven that he has this spirit and the whole 2 million nation of Latvia has his back to the fullest. If he falls, two million people are helping him get back on the feet. If he make's a mistake 2 million people forgive him and encourage him to don't look back and move forward. Even as I'm writing this comment, I'm waiting 3 hours till 1.30 AM in the night from Netherlands to watch his game and support him.
If you didn't read it all the point is, he represents us and love him for it, but that puts him on a tight spot on how he represents us and if he isn't proud of where he come's from, then we aren't proud of him and we do not support him. At the end he explained it that he meant it as a joke, and its totally reasonable and we forgave him, but he represents a whole nation of 2 million - its a small nation, but if you think about it that 2 million people got his back - its a scary thing. We are not as a fans of a sports team, or music or some other hobby or activity - we are united as a nation and trust me that's tight bond.

It's only because it got screwed over by communism and it's been free since 1990, it takes time to get a country back to normal after living under such oppression, but historically there are some amazing buildings etc to visit, things are changing, I say visit there before you judge, but perhaps don't visit in winter, very very cold, in summer there's a lot going on and it's a better time to visit. Also if you appreciate culture then the song festival and other festivals that you wouldn't see in the U.S.

He's right, though. Most languages on earth are useless outside where you are born. Feel lucky if your native language is English, Mandarin or Spanish. Like here in Shanghai, for the locals their first language isn't Mandarin but the Shanghainese dialect. If you speak it to a local, there's an instant familiarity and comfort, but even they will admit it's a useless language outside of Shanghai.
On the other hand, "Fuck Latvia" is kind of a controversial thing to say outside hanging out with your Latvian friends.

The only people that speak Latvian live in Latvia and there is a 10% chance that you'll meet someone outside of Latvia that speaks Latvian. I was gonna root for this guy to go high in the draft and make Latvia proud...now I lost a lot of respect for him. I saw his apology video--it might be enough for some, but not for me and many others. He's young, he's entitled to a stupid mistake. But he should address his country in a more meaningful way than a generic 30 second apology. I have the feeling that he's just trying to be cool, but to diss your home country like this is supremely un-cool.

Pauly yo LOL get a sense a humor man, from what i gathered he was in no way trying to be offensive to his home country. In fact, less that .5% of the world population actually speak Latvian, so it's not far off the truth that people actually try to learn languages that would be more beneficial to them.....like Spanish and English, that are the second and third most spoken languages world wide at 6% and 5% respectively. So i really don't see how he was being offensive.

    • @psarks1601

chiIdplease If you don't see how he was being offensive, maybe you should ask the thousands of Latvians who were actually offended by his comments. And Kristaps apologized for his comments, so he also realized that he offended many people. He's probably a nice kid, but unfortunately in this video he acts like a douche. Perhaps the New York City douchery rubbed off on him during his visit. Not surprising, I guess. Dude is young and not fully developed. Needs to get smacked by his mom so he never says something so stupid again.
