I’m in Oregon with relatively mild winters but I’d like to move my birds into a structure like this for winter (Nov-Feb). I’m also considering getting a high tunnel that I can add wire to… I just don’t know what works best!!

    Hello, Heifer USA officials who made this useful video for us. I'm following you from Türkiye. I think when raising meat chickens on pasture, the chickens are not left outside of schooners or chicken tractors. However, in laying hen farming, chickens can also go out into the sunlight outside of schooners or chicken tractors. Is this thought correct? If I'm thinking correctly, I would like to ask three questions based on this.
    1-) How many square meters of area is required per chicken when raising broiler chickens using a schooner or chicken tractor in the pasture?
    2-) In raising laying hens using a schooner or chicken tractor, how many square meters of total area is required per chicken, both inside and outside the schooner and chicken tractor?
    3-) How many turkeys are there on the schooner where the turkeys are placed?
    Hoping you will reply, I thank you in advance and send you my love and greetings from Türkiye.

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  3 роки тому +1

      Great questions! Our pastured chickens go to processing after 50 days (around 7 weeks). Mortality rates fluctuate with the seasons - in rainy season, we may see increased deaths related to flooding; in the summer, we may see more heat-related deaths. In general, though, our mortality rates stays around 3% of the total flock.

    Hi, I am Ameda A commercial farms developer and poultry raising technician from Kenya in East Africa.
    Can layers breeds perform well on pasture raising like broiler breeds does?
    Also how can I come to your farm for voluntary internship and to raise my experience in flock management.

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  3 роки тому

      Hi David! Yes! Generally pastured layers is the same as pastured broilers (moving every day or every couple days to a new spot on pasture) but with a different type of housing that includes nests - called an ‘egg mobile’. From what I’ve seen on pastured layers, a lot of the time they are day ranged with poultry netting or free ranged with access to the egg mobile. There are many different designs of structures used. You can learn more about our residential volunteer program here: www.heifer.org/usa/volunteer.html

    • @gulsumdave5711

      I’d guess it’s down to the scale of the operation. 30,000 birds a year in batches of 3,200, that would take a lot of Saladin style tractors compared to six schooners.

    Please what do mean by raising chickens on pasture

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  Рік тому

      When we say "raising chickens on pasture," we mean raising our chickens in semi-open outdoor buildings called chicken schooners. These structures allow our chickens to eat grass, bugs, plants, and anything else they can find on the floor, or the pasture where the schooner is located. Instead of being raised in crowded, dirty barns, our chickens are raised on grass.
      This method leaves the chicken manure in the pasture, which makes our soil healthier and improves the pasture. It also means our chickens are usually happier, healthier, and easier to raise!

    Hello...very good content...I am an engineer myself but thinking about starting a chicken farm...these videos you have created have been a great boost for confidence...Please keep up the good work...:)
    Quick few questions: Do you raise the egg-laying chickens separately? Do chickens in the tractor lay eggs? What do you do with roosters if you get chicks from some other poultry/farm(Learnt from some older videos of yours that you get chicks and then raise them, wasn;t sure if that's from your own farm or not)?

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  3 роки тому +3

      We're so glad you found our videos informative and enjoyable!
      We currently don't raise laying hens at Heifer Ranch - only broiler chickens, which are harvested for meat. We order chicks from an external hatchery, and we receive both male and female chicks. Hens typically don't start laying eggs until they're 6 months old, and our chickens are processed when they're 7-8 weeks old, so we've never had an issue with egg-laying in the schooner. Great questions!

    Nice video, thanks. Sorry if I missed it, but how much do you profit per chicken in this system? I'm looking at doing a somewhat scaled down version of this and I'm curious about the cost/profit ratio.

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  3 роки тому

      Great question! Our profit margins are a bit different because of the infrastructure required to sustain our large production scale, but the average profit for other farmers in our co-op (using similar methods and equipment) is about $3.00-$3.50 per bird.

    Great content. I have never farmed a day in my life but this content really gets me thinking about doing something. Can you tell me if I understood correctly and clarify something for me?
    - 9 batches of 3200.
    - New Batches started every 4-5 weeks.
    - Each Batch would occupy 6 Schooners
    In other answers to comments you said each schooner would need 3- 4 acres. So each batch needs 18-24 acres. So since you do 9 batches does that mean you cover 162-216 acres or can you go back over some acres through out the year with later batches?
    How large is your brooder building and does it fit 3200 chicks at once? Does it have a concrete floor under all the wood chips or is it dirt?

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  2 роки тому +1

      You did understand correctly! We generally avoid going back over areas we've already crossed during the same season, but occasionally we will, if necessary. Generally, we let our pastures rest between batches of chickens, so waste products can break down and the forage can grow back for the next batch that comes along.
      Our brooder is 30' by 100' with a concrete floor, and it can comfortably fit all 3200 chicks! Great questions!

      @@HeiferUSA Awesome! Thanks for answering all my Q's. Oh wow, yah 3200 chicks for 3000 sq seem way plenty based on the other info I was able to glean. What would you say is the min space for chicks? Is there a certain formula one can use like the formula for 1.5 sq per chicken in a prarie schooner?

    Who do you purchase your Ross 308s chick's from. How many pounds of feed does each chicken eat from day1 to processing

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  3 роки тому +1

      We source from Keith Smith Co in central Arkansas. Each chicken consumes approximately 2.8 lbs feed per lb of carcass weight. So 2.8 x 4.50 = 12.6 lbs per bird
