- Sarah Willis spends the day with the Israeli musician Avi Avital and his mandolin. They travel through Berlin in a rickshaw, hold a 'plucked instruments picnic' and Avi convinces techno-music lovers that the mandolin is a really cool instrument.
Sarah Willis is a British-American French horn player. In 2001, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic, becoming the first female member of its brass section.
She was born in Maryland, USA and grew up in Tokyo, Boston, Moscow and London. At age 14 she started playing French horn and then attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department in London, UK. She studied full-time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK.
In 1991, she moved to Berlin, where she became Second Horn in the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim.

There are lots of excellent mandolin performers in the world. What is so special about this one except for his hippie-negligent outlook which Deutsche Grammophon hopes to sell to a certain category of audience?
Curatica C 'cos in all fairness he is quite competent a classical player. But yes there are plenty good mandolin players around the world
How painful it must have been for an Israeli to travel around Berlin. To walk on the very streets where in the not so distant past his people were being beaten and murdered by Berliners and other Germans.
I never knew that Avi actually lives in Berlin. Amazing.
