    I used the Lancool II Mesh for my girlfriend's budget build and I really enjoyed building into it for the airflow it allowed and the ease of it. You did mention the price jump of the newer version in your comments. Inflation aside, the inclusion of the USB C cable and additional fans right out of the box alone justify the price difference. I look forward to using this case for a future build. It looks as it can pretty much take every piece of hardware I can thown into it.
    Well done Lian Li and, as usual, exceptional review Leo! I quite enjoy them. Keep them up!

    If it doesn't come with 2 sets of 90 ft of 6 gage wiring, 60 amp breakers, industrial outlets, and a 1500w next gen PSU with a built in sinewave UPS, as well as a window duct and built in AC unit to isolate the heat from the room it's in, it's not ready for the 4090.

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck Рік тому +3

      hehehe, I have a 4090 TUF OC in a Lancool III, it's not THAT extreme ;) Also, a 3090 Ti actually draws more power ...usually. Definitely less watts "per frame", and _usually_ less watts a max load (though not always).
      I have mine slightly undervolted, and backed slightly off the Asus OC numbers (mostly to keep power draw reasonable). Also have an undervolt applied to the cpu (7900X), cuz they are significantly over-juiced, and you actually get _better_ benchmarks with undervolt, unless you lost the silicon lottery badly.
      It does put out some heat under load though, yeah. Better to have a 'warm' room than a 'hot' case though. Not sure how it will be in summer yet... I could always underclock for a couple months if necessary though.
      Based on the draw I see, my system should work fine with an 850 watt PSU in full load, but I did go with 1000watt for stability & longevity (and a couple percent better efficiency). Went corsair, the better one with the japanese caps. PSU's with chinese caps fill store shelves with "refurbs", and every refurb on the shelf is someone's potential PC horror story. Never buy a critical component which has many refurb's for sale ;) Skimping on the PSU and running it at/near max isn't a good idea in the long run.
      Lancool 3 does fit a 4090 with plenty of room to spare. It's a BIG mid-tower. Actually I have it sitting next to a 750D full tower (ye old win7 system), and they are exactly the same width, maybe an inch shorter and an inch less depth for the lancool. It's almost a small full-tower, almost.
      I wasn't going to spend as big as a 4090 really, but at the time I could not find an XTX (figured i'd raster 4k, and upscale ray tracing with FSR). 4090 was just sitting there, all lonely... at retail price... and I really do like Asus's TUF series cards... and realistically, 4090 is probably good for an additional generation of future proofing. And it was only about 700 cup ramen lunches in price difference... hehe. I rarely splurge, but when I do, I try to do it in style.

    • @Justifiers

      @kathrynck that GPU is the 1080ti of the generation for sure. Sucker should last through 2 gpu launches before it even starts to lose relevance
      I went with the MSI x3 Very satisfied with these things
      Despite my meming comment, they're surprisingly efficient. I've been using my 850w Platinum Be Quiet Straight power 11 as a hold over while I wait for the PSU I want at a reasonable price. Will be breaking down and just getting one over-priced if I can't snag one by mid June

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck Рік тому +2

      @@Justifiers I went straight from a 1080 Ti Strix OC to a 4090 TUF OC. hehe. And straignt from Win7 to an install of Win10 with it's telemetry & forced updating amputated.
      1080 Ti Strix is _Still_ plenty for 1440p raster. It's comparable to a 3060 Ti. It couldn't do ray tracing, but really you wouldn't want to look at ray tracing until you're in 3080 territory at minimum. So it's legit competitive with 3060 Ti's.
      From all the pre-release leaks I'm seeing, it'll be competitive with 4060 Ti's as well. No DLSS-3 on the 1080 ti, but for straight raster-1440, they look fairly even.
      On the PSU, I had a 1000 HX on the old system (flawless in heavy abuse for 8 years, extremely efficient). Went with RM1000x on the new build (slightly cheaper, but still japanese caps).
      I'd avoid Corsair's RM series though, the models without the lowercase "x" I mean. RM=bad, RMx=ok. The RM's have chinese caps, and the most numerous PSU's on the shelf at Microceter were refurbished RM (non-x) PSU's.
      There are other good PSU's out there. Just sharing what I know of the corsair ones.
      Also, give lots of 'padding' to your wattage. GPU's & CPU's have tiny spikes (by tiny i mean brief, not small) in power draw which can be dramatically higher than their rated draw. If you don't have lots of headroom, those spikes result in crashes. And in a way which is hard on the hardware. I'd try to get a PSU at least 30% above the "claimed" power draw of your components.
      Even without power draw spikes, running a PSU at it's maximum burns it up much faster, and causes it to draw power from the wall less efficiently. A platinum rated PSU operating near it's max rating has an efficiency lower than a bronze rated PSU operating at about 60% of it's max.
      It's a lot like speakers in a sound system. Run them at their max throughput, and they'll progressively lose volume and clarity. In a couple years they'll be junk. Fairly universal for electronics. I never even turn the fan in my car up to max, 3 (out of 4) is my hard limit hehe.
      If you have a 7000 series or 13000 series cpu, I'd look at undervolting those as well. Both AMD & Intel went VERY aggressive on juicing their chips this generation. They run hotter than heII. Won't last long at factory settings. Some 7800X3D's are already burning up because there's no safety margin in factory spec power. High power (higher than a chip can actually use) means less silicon fails spec for sale. Allows the makers to push questionable silicon onto the shelf. Most of the CPU's & GPU's this gen run great on undervolt. Usually even 'better' on undervolt, due to less thermal throttling.
      Always remember, the published factory power spec _could_ be the best, most accurate opinion of the engineers who build the hardware. But their bosses want to sell you new hardware in a couple years...
      I'm keeping my 4790/1080ti/win7 machine intact, as a legacy computer for older software. It's still a beast in 1440p.
      Although... I have found that MOST older software which ostensibly "doesn't work on Win10", actually _does_ work fine on Win10 if you manually block the software from talking to it's publisher before you install it. In a perfect world, that'd be grounds for a class action lawsuit. Imagine if letting a dealership maintain your car past a certain date would 'break' your car, and their solution was for you to buy a new car...
      For example, if you have a $700 copy of Adobe CS5, and you install it on win7, validate it's full retail price legitimate key, then copy the 'happy' key-validation file, go to your win10 machine, block your W10 machine from speaking to any website with 'adobe' in the name. Install CS5, then slip the validated key-validation file into place... oh look at that, works fine on Win10. So long as it doesn't talk to adobe's website. And it actually had nothing to do with "can't afford to update the software indefinitely", ~surprised picachu face~
      /end rant, sorry.
      The 4090 is really bored with 1440p though. I think it briefly touched 75% usage ...once.
      I still need a new monitor.
      Not thrilled with the current large format 4k options though.
      - PG42UQ looks amazing, but it's very pricey, and oled's _still_ get burn-in.
      - Neo G7 is likely the best VA panel ever made, but it's smaller than i'd like, and WAY too curved.
      Those are my two top pics of what's available now though. Kinda waiting on a larger, less curved Neo G7, or an extra-super burn-in resistant PG42UQ. Or anything similar. LG's WOLED panels (used in the pg42) do look to have the least burn-in among oled's... it's just still far from ideal.

      1. Lian Li Lancool 3 RGB Black

      5. 20TB Seagate Ironwood HDD
      6. 2x Inland 4TB SSD with Heatsink
      7. I9-13900k
      (May get the KS variant if they even get down to their listed MSRP, not paying 1k for a 600 CPU)
      8. Artic Liquid II 360mm AIO Cooler
      9. Kyronaut Thermal Paste
      10. MSI Suprim X 4090
      (Fan version, not the Liquid X)
      Should end up as a pretty damned good build, I might need to get extra fans if it's too hot though.

    Love my Lan cool 2 mesh performance, no RGB, just a fan speed switch which makes more sense given the case is for performance.
    GPU temps can be really improved by putting fans on the lower tray, (low profile p12s work wonders) they don't need to spin very fast so can be quiet but bring temps down nicely on GPU.
    The case looks like a pretty good improvement in places over the 2 mesh, but not enough to upgrade for me though, but that just shows how good these cases were already.
    Will agree though they are a big case, I've actually modded a 5.25 bracket for a dampened 3.5 HDD (don't like the vibrations through hot swap bays) and still have loads of space even with the nhd15 and 3080ti.

    As always, thanks Leo for showing the case with E-ATX and ATX boards installed as well as showing radiator support. Do you have the height of the actual PSU shroud? I feel like it might be possible, with a custom mount, to install 120mm fans or radiators vertically against the outside of the shroud similar to something like a 900D, SMA8, V3000.

    • @KitGuruTech
      @KitGuruTech  2 роки тому

      I doubt that would work - you have about 118mm to work with from the floor of the case to the top of the fan rack however it is not clear space. Perhaps do-able with small 92mm fans.

      @@KitGuruTech I see, thanks for the information. Is that measurement from the bottom of the case inside the PSU shroud frame to the top inside of the PSU shroud frame? All the other obstructions under the shroud such as the HDD mounting would be removed. Either way, it sounds like it just needs to have the shroud removed, slightly extended, and reinstalled to make it work. That's not a difficult mod at all. If it's 118mm, they really should have just increased the size by a couple mm and made it a feature.

      Zen 4 is a hot hot hot cpu. Definitely do experiment with undervolting. I think they juiced them extremely high to increase yield. So there's an excellent chance that any particular cpu will love an undervolt (actually perform better, at less power draw, due to reduced thermal throttling). Will last longer too.
      Mine dropped 8-10C at idle, with benchmark numbers actually improved, just by going PBO -20 and moving max temp from 95 to 85.
      Intel is similar, both are overjuiced for yield with these new, more pricey die nodes. Most of the chips need considerably less power to meet manufacturer's specs.

      @@kathrynck Aye, I'm looking to move on from a 3900X, which I power limited to 99% to force it to stay at 3.7 ghz and not permanently attempt to boost while idle. That alone saved me 12 degrees!

      @kathrynck Рік тому +1

      @@Duvoncho On my 7900X I actually get _higher_ clocks with undervolt. Cuz with the over-juicing (as per factory spec), it thermal-throttles the cpu. Even with my 420mm radiator & thermal-grizzly paste.
      I was getting 50-52C (delta of about +26C over ambient) just sitting in bios. With PBO -20, I gett 42C (delta of +16C) sitting in bios. And it benchmarks _higher_ scores, with _higher_ clocks, with the undervolt.
      It depends on the silicon though. "Some" of the chips need all that juice to keep up. (the ones which would have been flunked at a more normal power level, and for which the high-power spec was used, to increase wafer yield). But "most" of the am4 chips can work well at -10 to -30 in PBO. And even if you got one of the chips which actually needs so much power (unfortunate, but could happen), you'll still want to set the max temp to 85C I think. better to have a long lasting chip and good stability. Plus 95C really bakes the moisture out of thermal paste, you'd have to re-paste it frequently at 95.

      One of the points I did not make in the review is that the case fans can be daisy chained together. I had the rear fan on one header, the two Noctuas on CPU and CPU Opt and the three front fans on another SYS headers. Noctua supplies a Y cable so I could easily have built the PC using three fan headers.

The base price for the non-rgb Torrent dropped about $30 also recently so it made it a bit more tempting(since those stock fans included are pretty expensive alone). If choosing the Lancool 3 the extra storage/modularity options are great. In addition would be considering adding 3 more fans above the PSU shroud.

    Have this case. It's excellent. And while not "cheap", it's not "expensive" either. It's at a very good price-point for what you get.
    Don't attempt to use a 420mm rad in it though, unless you really know what you're doing. It can take a 420, but there are asterisks attached, and your build time will go way up.
    But it does look sick with 420mm worth of fans up front, and a 420 rad & fans venting out the top.
    Installing 2-3 120mm fans in bottom does help your gpu stay cooler as well, and improves gpu-fan life. They go on the shelf above the psu. It's worth adding to the build.

    I think you could have more clearance for 3 radiators if you mounted fans and rad on opposite sides of the front bracket. I've done this with an AIO on the Lancool II and it works just fine. Since the front of the Lancool III is meant to support 3 140s, I would be surprised if having 120s on the "outside" of the front bracket would cause any interference with the front panel.

    I was tempted by this case, but there's quite a few things that have now put me off. I don't like the bottom being lit up by rgb fans, showing a nasty mess of cables. Having one cut out on the right hand panel is poor. In a lot of set ups with rgb controllers, there's no way you'll get cables all around that area to a controller that is in place of one of the ssd mounts. 120mm fans on the front look silly, as there's too much empty space around the outside. £170 for the white RGB case? No way it's worthy of that price tag! Disappointing case for me, personally.
