  • This video takes a look into the historical origins of the precursor style to Goju-Ryu, called Naha-Te, and its founder, Higaonna Kanryo. Higaonna Kanryo Sensei brought together several elements of the "toudi" style indigenous to the Ryukyu Kingdoms, and combined them with martial arts studied in Fujian, China, when creating his style.

Please make a video on Arakaki Seisho. There is so little material about him on the net,yet he was one of the most famous Karate masters in Okinawa. In 1867 he performed Karate in front of Chinese ambassador who visited Okinawa.I think that says a lot of his Karate mastery, considering that Bushi Matsumura and other Karate greats were active during that time, yet Arakaki was chosen as a presenter of Okinawan martial arts.He performed Seisan and Shisochin on that day.He also taught other kata like Niseshi,Unshu and Sochin. He was fluent in Chinese and he served as an interpreter and Okinawa government's official. It's hard to find information about his martial arts teachers.I couldn't find any info on what Gungfu style he was practicing.I hope that you will shed some light onto the matter.

Hey! I like how you are presenting this serious in a no-nonsense fashion. I don't wanna appear spammy, but you might like my interview with Russ Smith in which I picked his brain for some more context on the Kung Fu - Karate connection after I did the trip with Jesse Enkamp. Russ said that Whooping Crane master Ruan Dong stated that the Chinese government had been pressuring teachers to claim Ryu Ryu Ko was Xie Chong Xiang in order to capitalise on "karate tourism" in Fuzhou.

I know it’s a different system but you should also do a profile video on Mas Oyama since a lot of Kyokushin is based on Goju Ryu or a video on one of his most Goju instructors, Nei-Chu So

Sanchin kata comes from Saam Chien, a form practiced by multiple styles of kung fu. I'm planning a video in the future breaking down the history and changes to Sanchin kata!

Sanchin in Chinese is Sanzhan. It is practiced in many styles of Fujian province, but no it is not practiced by Shaolin monks and never has been.

Can you research and give a report on what Goju Ryu looked like before World War 11. I have heard that there were differences in the kata but no one says much about it. As far as I know there hasn't been much interest in enquiring into this. Perhaps there someone who could even demonstrate the differences. I hope you can come up with something on this interesting subject.
