Next week we are going to take a look at a classic Fantasy Flight Game... Android!
Of course you are welcome to make requests in the UA-cam.com comments!
Just got this game for my Nephew and nieces for the holidays (along with another game). I brought out Hero's Quest a year or two ago and they have loved it. Excited to give this a go with them, thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching enjoy it !
Great review, I wasn't sure whenever to get Descent, but now I know that I'll have lot's of fun playing it with friends.
Also, if you want really good drinking game, take shot each time he says "that's enough to defeat that goblin"
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching!
I am watching this game from a year, but this video made me buy this game, ty fr d video
Thanks for watching!
Fantasy fight never skimps out on their art/ components. Incredible game they put out. It's a good alternative of GH if you can't afford it or don't want to get it.
Fantasy Flight Games pretty much has a lock on the dungeon crawler market with Mansions of Madness, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Descent.
While I am not a huge fan of these games focusing on a timer aspect overall they do tell decent stories.
I noticed you didn't take an Overlord card when the hero was defeated - you then said you don't think there's enough cost to being defeated. I wondered if you hadn't realised the OL Card rule? If so, and you still don't think it's enough, I wonder if taking 2 OL cards might be a bigger cost but still avoiding elimintion?
Anyway, thanks for the review very helpful to get me started. Cheers!
Good catch and I really need to annotate the video there. You do indeed take an Overlord card when defeating a Hero but I feel that isn't enough of a penalty against the players and it doesn't seem to stop players from making "Hail Mary" plays..
Thanks for watching.
That's actually a great idea and one we implemented with Super Dungeon Explore in 5 player games to mitigate the player elimination. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching!
Whynot66 from bgg here. I really enjoy being able to see such a detailed breakdown and example of play. Just a small nitpick I have is to lower the volume of the music a little as it ends up being much louder than any of your dialogue. Keep up the good work I cant wait to watch more of your videos in the future.

I don't recall the exact wording from the rulebook since it is worded oddly but basically enemies block squares and allies do not. Additionally enemies do not stop you from going between them if they are diagonal but DO stop you from going between them if orthogonal. I imagine that last bit was a concession from square to hex movement.
Very great introduction and presentation of the game. I only have one advice and that is that you make separate shots of the different cards and when you mention them, show them momentarily in a focused lens. Right now it's quite hard to see what is written on the cards. I tried several times in vain to see and figure out what was written on the cards through unfocused lens. If you could show the text just momentarily it would improve the video and give an idea of what kind of text is written.
Good review!! Feel like you should revisit the review however... because the app has changed a core mechanic and made the game coop or solo-able...the app brings a whole new approach and is quite amazing!
The app is a good addition to the game and pretty much makes this one of the best co-op dudes on a map dungeon crawlers out there. As a co-op the injury mechanics work really well to keep all the players in the game until the end.
Great Review! I recently bought this game and like it a lot.
Thanks for watching and have fun with it!
Dumb question here and I haven't played for awhile but are you able to move THROUGH enemies? Because when I was playing as the Overlord we took the rules as I couldn't move through the other heroes and they basically surrounded me ( I had that big fat guy..slave driver or something..it was the interrogation quest) and kept me from being able to push forward. I tried to kill them but my dice rolls were less than satisfactory.
@Sandviper thanks for tje quick reply and thanks to both of you for watching!
Great video! One question:
At the minute 44:20 you use a warlord card (Dark magic I think) to gain an extra bolt while attacking with the white ettin one of the heroes. And you use the special ability to increase of three damage points for a second time during the attack (the first bolt was on the dice). Is it allowed to use the bolt special abilities twice or more if on the character card there is only one? I thought not... since on some cards the same bolt ability is reported twice
I just starting playing and this really helped! Keep up the good work!
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching!
I'm waiting for this game to be delivered. I have 3 questions (so far!):
1. I thought from another video that equipping items is a specific phase in the player turn? So when the thief finds the helmet, he should not be able to equip it until his next turn, right?
2. I didn't notice the goblins move or attack at all during the OLs first turn? EDIT: I noticed it's because they were stunned, but if I understand correctly they should still have been able to take 1 action each. I think someone else pointed this out already though.
3. On the OLs first turn, the Ettins both ttacked then stayed put next to the heroes. Can't they continue their move if they had spaces remaining? In which case doesn't it make sense to move them at least 1 step away from the melee heroes so they have to spend a move action and can only attack once?
Those are my Qs so far, I want to understand the rules as well as possible before the game arrives so I can teach my kids the right rules. Cheers!
Off the top of my head you have it correct on #1 and #2 (can't recall #3 without double checking the rules since we have been playing 1st Edition again and I might be confused here). Not a real knock against 2nd edition it is fun but since I own everything for 1st edition Descent and none of the 2nd edition expansions, we started a 1st edition campaign.
Note for 37:30. You would actually not be able to perform Ashrian's heroic feat as her second action because you already used up her second action for her attack. Her first action was to move 5 spaces, so that's all actions.
Ashrian's heroic feat does cost one action to use (indicated by the arrow) and you have no actions left, so you could not have used her heroic feat in that turn.
Anyway I still want to thank you for the video. It's mostly correct and comprehensive which is not easy when showcasing such a complex game.
Good catch! I am slowly working towards becoming as error free as possible but sometimes playing so many sides can lead to mistakes.
Thanks for commenting and watching!
GrumshBGG You are doing a very good job. I just started playing and only had two play sessions yet.
First was quite a struggle (have no history of playing complex "grown up" boardgames).
For the second session I got prepared by watching the watched it played series about descent 2nd ed and also your video and both have been very helpful.
The second gaming sessions was way better and very fun. But still there is so much stuff to keep track off... in the second session we started a campaign and I lost First Blood as OL before taking my first turn because I forget the tiny sentence in the quest that says "This Ettin has 2 more live for each hero" and so against a 2 hero party I played with a regular white 5 health Ettin as Mauler... :D
Well, First Blood is not that interesting anyway, so I'm actually quite happy we didn't spend to much time on it even if it was by mistake.
All in all I agree with you that it is a challenge to achieve an error free session, but again I think you did a nice job.
Cheers.
I am glad to hear the videos helped! It's a fun game with tons of replay even without the expansions. Thanks for watching.
Nice collection of Dungeon Crawlers you have, personally nothing will ever come close to Advanced Heroquest, but maybe that's just nostalgia talking?.
It's a toss up for me between Descent 1st edition (1st edition only) and 4th edition DnD. 4E is a table top game especially if you just run the modules.
Excellent review. I share your objection to the easy revival rules, and your house rule looks very reasonable. I also dislike the LOS rules and the ability of large monsters to squeeze through tight spaces. Having tokens for the lieutenants is a big buzz kill.
+ExBruinsFan I'll be doing a full review of Dungeon Saga pretty soon. The good news is it doesn't have the same criticisms of Descent but it does have its own problems. Look for it some time this month, possibly into December since I have Fury of Dracula to edit and 504 to record still.
Thanks for watching!
I noticed from one of your comments that your group has gone back to Descent 1.0. I am curious as to why. My own group is still playing the original, though our overlord has 2.0, as well.
Couple reasons, mainly we got tired of the smaller maps that just seemed like a race for a goal versus a real Dungeon delve feeling. Plus we have everything for first edition which back then was a lot more than 2.0 had available. Plus the Chumbawumba of board gaming rules makes it feel very none deadly, you know the Heroes get knocked down, but they get up again..... :)
GrumshBGG
Clever reference. I see value in both sets of rules. I really like 2.0 being more like an RPG, but I agree that 1.0 feels more epic. I personally, could play an 8 hour session with no problem.
Agreed!
Although if Dungeon Saga gets cleaned up enough I can see wasting many, many hours with it!
Also a great house rule to use in Super Dungeon Explore to get over the player elimination in 5 player games!
Great review, im fan of board games and I play often with a group of friends on weekends and i was wondering if i should buy this game or not.
I've played D&D ed 3 & 4, Game of Thrones, Last day on Earth and a couple of more games from Call of Cthulu universe (mansions of madness and arkham horror).
I want to ask you how complex is the stat management and the general rules?
On average, what is the lenght of each game? does it take a few hours or will it take days to play a venture/campaign?
Cheers!
If you played D&D you will most likely enjoy Descent it has campaign play where the results of "adventures" can have an effect on the long term campaign. It is also nice that the players can choose "where to go next" which does a good job making it feel more like an RPG. The downside is that to challenge the players the Overlord (the DM) has to actively be trying to defeat the players if they want to pose a challenge which is different from what players may be used to in standard RPGs.
Difficulty wise there isn't anything here you will find challenging to learn looking at the games you have already played and most of it will seem pretty intuitive yet more restrictive than a standard RPG. Stats are also pretty simple and straightforward, heroes will level up and learn new skills to increase in power.
Each adventure is broken down into 2 parts which after set up should be done in about an hour (except for the final encounter). Usually we get in a full adventure in 2.5 hours of play, your average campaign is 8 adventures (depending on which campaign you play since there are quite a few expansion campaigns available now).
Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
GrumshBGG
So, should I understand that there is a difference between Adventure and Campaign?
In campaing all your level and items carry over, just like in D&D, right?
Exactly. You can play Descent as a random (or not so random if you like) adventure where it's an Overlord versus the players (much like Super Dungeon Explore) or you can play a full campaign where the adventures are linked and the heroes gain more power as the campaign unravels.
Hello, thanks for the video review. I am curious about the square size on the game board -- are they 1"x1"? Also, are the miniatures hard plastic or the more flexible rubbery kind? I ask because I wonder if the miniatures might be interchangeable with the ones for the Dungeons and Dragons board games. Do you have any thoughts? Thank you.
I am going off memory here since the game isn't handy but I do believe the squares are 1 inch in size or very close to it.
The miniatures themselves are what I call the "Middle Range" quality. High Range is what I attribute to Games Workshop, the very hard plastic that you don't want to drop on concrete. The low end I attribute to the "Dungeon Command" games. A very rubbery plastic that is bendable and can be "droopy". Descent is a happy medium between these 2 extremes.
They would work very well with the D&D games if you needed them as proxies or as "create your own" creatures.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
He played two overlord cards. The second one allows you to spend a lightning bolt to gain 3 damage. He's essentially using them to combo with each other.
It's just a coincidence that the overlord card and the ettin both add 3 damage.
Denisnider brought me here. I really like it
Correct! Someone else brought this to my attention a while back over at boardgamegeek! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@Danilo Antonelli:
I don't have the ability to watch the video right now since I am on my phone but not all special abilities require an action to use. If the ability doesn't have a arrow symbol on it then it does not take up an action to use the ability. That arrow is the key.
This should be corrected starting with my pathfinder review, thanks for watching!
It depends on the quest. With 20 quests in the base game without the expansions some offer different spawning rules.
My 10 yr old plays this no problem when I'm playing with him.
My then 9 year old had very little trouble playing this with me. It didn't hold his attention past the 1st campaign though.
there are separate purchasable miniatures for at least some of the luitenants such as the farrows
hi, i didnt understand why the healer do 3 actions instead of normals 2.. movement, attack with staff than special ability... it's that normal?.. another thing, the thief equip the helm immediatly.. i was thinking, can he do that in the action part of his turn?... equip things it's not something about first part of the turn before actions?!
Can you do a review of the first edition ?
Sure, I like the 1st edition better personally only downside is you will see my lousy fast paint jobs I did on the 1st edition... very cringeworthy...
This game looks incredible. As soon as Fantasy Flight has it in stock again, I'm grabbing it.
If you are a Star Wars Fan check out Imperial Assault before picking up Descent. Same game mechanics just in the Star Wars Universe.
GrumshBGG
I already have it. :3
I need to pick it up. I wanted to get it for the holidays but with all the other games I have going right now I know it wont hit the table for a while.
Someone was nice enough to clarify that for me over at boardgamegeek when I posted the video over there and yes it makes stun much... much.. more balanced!
Can anyone give me a quick explanation on the differences between Descent 1.0 and 2.0? And also what about Doom compared to the Descent games? I know they basically have the same mechanics just a different theme, but are there any pros and cons aside from the theme aspects between those games?
@Cole Sebert - True and they do look nice. Personally though I just substituted in some Heroscape miniatures which worked fine for me. It still would have been nice to have the miniatures in the box though.
Thanks for watching! Expect a new review once a week, with android, galaxy trucker 5th anniversary edition, and clash of cultures in the pipeline!
Ok, thanks, now it's more clear.
I don't have the game yet, and it is sometimes hard to follow without having the cards in front of me...
Could you do a huge group playing descent second edition, that would be awesome!
While I do appreciate the request, Descent isn't a game I play too often anymore. As a matter of fact it is sitting in the Goodwill pile right now. I might be able to con some friends into it but no promises.
Thanks for watching!
@Fate toms - to use a role playing reference it is basic versus advanced D&D. 1.0 is more in depth but with that depth you get many more hours of time investment while 2.0 can be played in 90 minj tes or less but the rules are much more streamlined.
AVGN brought me here. I want this.
where did you come from? what AVGN episode?
Very Nice Review and explanation. Must get.....
Great video, can't wait for more
Thanks for watching and commenting!
@highschoolboy - If only! Sadly this isn't a replacement for the games workshop classic from the 90's.
i love this game and i enjoy playing it but calling the lightning bolt for some reason is bothering me it sounds so much better to call it a serge.
+Jacobus Le Roux I chose lightning bolt to make it easier to explain but yup surge(s) is correct and a term FFG uses in a couple of their games.
Thanks for watching!
Hello! You don't do many rewiews but they are indeed very exaustives! Godd job and thank you.
Thank you for this video. Great job
my partner bought me this for christmas.
Great time to buy before it goes fully out of print.
Can i Play it alone =D
