Great to see someone playing this game. Felt a random urge to search for a Lets Play and this brought back some great memories of playing as the Byzantines!
Hey there! I'm glad I could help out with the ol' trip down memory lane! As someone who is only now experiencing this game for the first time I'm so jealous of ya'll who got to grow up playing this game!
Hey, finally a channel that focuses on the originals! :D I've just started my own LP as the HRE on GA mode, and started looking around for other MTW players. As you mentioned, almost nobody is covering these, which is a shame. This was my first Total War game, and it's still fantastic IMO, so it's great to see someone else giving it a serious look! I'll be diving in to all of these with enthusiasm :)
Hey Count! It's nice to see another Medieval 1 player on here. I'm looking forward to watching your HRE campaign as that's a campaign that I'd like to play further on down the road. Due to the lack of coverage on these older games it can be a challenge to find answers/info regarding some of the lesser explained mechanics in this game. With that in mind I might come calling on you for some advice sooner rather than later! 😁 Thanks for stopping by! 🙏
@@khanofsteppe1667 Feel free to ask me anything! From what I'm seeing here and in your Irish campaign, I don't see any places where you & I have different understandings of the major mechanics. Unfortunately there are just some areas of the game that I don't think have been fully explained. Not sure if you have access to the original game manual, but that is a very well-done piece of work, quite thorough at around 80 pages. There's also a Bradygames guidebook that's a lot of fun, and also surprisingly detailed. It even has a chapter that goes through all the different combat modifiers. Both of those books are well worth it IMO if you can pick 'em up in a hard copy. They're also evidence of just how different the approach was 20 years ago when it came to presenting information. While it's nice that the newer games convey more info in-game, there was something to be said for the older approach of having an actual book you could bring with you and read at work on a break or whatever. I'll stop here before I start aging myself any further! 😆
Hey there! And hell yeah! I'm glad I could help provide some of that sweet sweet nostalgia. I myself am only getting around to playing the Total War series now but man I sure wish I had picked up this series back when I was a kid. Sill, I'm enjoying the heck out of it now! 👍

Hey there! I'm also glad you found the channel! I appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you're enjoying the campaigns 🙏 I'm having a blast playing these games and I'm going to keep it going!
You could have given the title of Naples to the highly loyal commander of the Naphta Throwers by moving that unit to a new army. Its commander then becomes a lord and thus gets preference of command (at equal command stat) even if you add the other 100 man unit to it afterwards.
The only close mid sized units to the Varagian Guard are Huscarls & Janissaries - Huscarls don't have disciplined, and lose point of armor and defense. Janissaries have 1 more attack, but lose 2 defense & 1 armor. Janissaries do get bonus vs cavalry though, so are better when facing knights. Hospitaller and Chilvalric foot knights are equally powerful, but a small unit. Bezerkers are a very small unit with much better attack, but only have minimal armor. They have twice the morale, so even though they're easy to surround, they'll fight to the last. In addition to having large unit size, Byzantine infantry has the disciplined trait, so even though they don't have moral bonuses, their morale penalties get reduced.
The Varangians are such beast. I haven't had a chance to use or fight against Janissaries though! I just finished my first Viking Invasion campaign and had my first encounter with Joms Vikings... and SHEESH! 😬 I know what I'm going to have nightmares of this month. ..so many dead Irishmen. The Byzantines really benefit from having such a unique unit roster, though I do hope that this campaign sees more action than my 'practice' campaign. I'm hoping that by actually taking the crusade objectives, that'll force a more "under siege" feeling coming from both the Mongols and the Catholics. Funny enough your satellite defence plan, sound quite a lot like the system the Byzantines actually did employ: Have small provincial guard armies mostly made of part time soldiers and militias guard the borders, hold forts and such while delaying and harassing the invading army. Till the main Imperial Army of the best and full time soldiers lead by the Emperor or selected General arrives to confront the main invading force. Theme/Thematic system is what it was called. Funny enough around the time period of this game, that system was being faded out for a new system due to the Turks dealing crushing damage to the Army in about 1071.
Yeah that's actually something I'm a little familiar with! In fact the satellite defense plan seems to be a fairly standard practice is many eras of history. This is one of the reasons why I'm really happy with the strategical opportunities in these older Total War games. It feels really organic and authentic and effective! All good things. I'm wondering if this sort of strategy is possible in the 3D strategy maps started in Rome Total War...
@@khanofsteppe1667 From Shogun 1 all the way to Shogun 2, yeah it can be employed as a strategy. The later games though due to global recruitment system, and the infamous general only armies and limited number of allowed armies ruins any ability to do a defence in depth strategy sadly. The later Total war games in my own opinion started to get rid of many options, features and became all about OP units and special abilities, tactics no longer needed, such much so that in Warhammer cavalry charges in the back no longer really work like they use to. They also changed the morale system where now the army rout as a whole when enough casualties are sustained, rather than on a unit by Unit's own situation basis.
@@RomanHistoryFan476AD Welp I guess I have about eight more years to enjoy using this strategy them 🤷♂ I'm not completely familiar with how global recruitment effects this type of strategy but I am familiar with the general only armies and the army limits. These are things that bother me. When I get to these games I'll obviously see if I can find a workaround but just as an outsider this feels like a very arbitrary answer. I know CA was trying to compensate for the A.I.'s inability to form a coherent strategy using general-less armies but arbitrary answers are the exact opposite of organic. And the systems in these first two games that feel organic are some of my favorite mechanics. Overall though I'm very excited to see how my strategies evolve with the franchise.
@@khanofsteppe1667 The problem with global recruitment is that while it costs more money to hire a unit and you must wait an extra turn. This does not really become that much of a hindrance since money is easy to get in the newer titles once you get rolling. It also means that now every army yours or enemy can rapidly be rebuilt and stacked with the finest troop types. Which now means delaying tactics are must useless since the enemy will attack your settlement and win, then in a matter of turns just be at 100% strength again, especially on higher difficulties. it makes it too easy to also just spam the elite troops no matter where you are, even if your in a very low developed area of the map. And well you can kind of see the border guard system no longer functions now as a result since the delay has been ripped away. With such limited army counts allowed, and only general leading allowed to lead armies now, no more captains. It means you can't really have an army that can be just stationed really just to be a guard. Since you will need your limited number of armies for your expansion. The new garrison system as well makes it so you can't just place a few cheap troops in a town to act as a simple public order control, your also forced now to pay for expensive garrison buildings as result. Garrisons which tend to suck in quality, for some reason all garrison troops are just poor quality no matter what unit they are.
