@@filetmignon9978 Sorry to break it to you but 99% of photography nowadays is not ''craft.'' Far, far away from any kind of art. Photography nowadays is business, not art. Mike this is great! 100x better than videos that just sit in front of the camera and tell you what you should be doing. Love the hands on and leading by example POV style. Good luck on a possible part 2!
If you were to approach with a set packages list on hand ready to go so the client can see immediately the costs and what they are going to get, you would probably have more luck getting jobs on the spot. Gives them a chance to say yes to a lower cost package to trail you out and if they are happy with the results good chance they will come back for a larger option. Props for putting yourself out there
Bro youre awesome. Doing this kind of content isnt easy and it shows real life conditions. Everyone else would thought "there is no point in going there, bc they sure have their social media teams and whatever", but actually just taking action and speaking to people, not matter how odd the chances are, is absolutely a goatmove.
I love these videos. Gives young people a good direction towards business, self-management and great mindset for framing a “no”. I’ve said no to offers before - it doesn’t mean I hate the person who asked. Sometimes it’s just wrong timing. But this inspires ideas, courage, self dependence and resilience. And we need more of that in the Australian youth. Starts with good role models doing any small part. 👏
I think some of them might be confusing what you're offering for a social media manager kind of thing or that you're doing your own content and are asking for permission. Would probably be easier if you said something like "I'm a professional photographer/videographer and I'm wondering if you're interested in any photos or videos for promotion on your channels". Might also be helpful to mention that it would be higher quality than what they might be doing with phones.
This is awesome! Putting it into perspective. It's not all about walking in, landing your killer job and just shooting for pay. It takes work, networking, etc.
Awesome videos man. You're extremely inspiring to not just me but thousands of young photographers. This is great if you also have someone good at marketing on your side. I hope it works out for me, i'd love to do what you do
tried doing this for wedding photography, meeting wedding planners and approaching Venus. the rejection is so brutal. but anything to get my foot in the door of wedding photography! love these videos. not that I take enjoyment of seeing someone get rejected, but it definitely helps with my own confidence on knowing if I am doing the right thing! keep up the great work!
Just be very careful when you tell porky pies that many industries are well networked and people will often check e.g we were doing social media work for X and if they check and they say no he didn't, you reputation is down the toilet before you even start. You are there as a business enabler and trust is a very important part of that relationship.
Hey Mike, great video man ! I’ve actually started doing the same thing in Paris, but I’m actually offering a free shoot instead, I give them the content and everything, so I actually have a conversation with them and bring them value. Now we’re both in a position where we can “love and trust” each other It’s kind of the same method used in markets, where you’re more likely to buy from the guy that gave u a bite of something good, rather than the guy offering u the product. This has gotten me a few jobs in those gyms.
This is exactly how I started! Going into businesses with my camera to make an in-person impression. It's easier than cold calling or emailing. You definitely need to be prepared for a ton of people saying no. It gets easier with practice.
I tried walking around gyms offering pics once. I haven´t got a single job taking pictures and stuff for social media, but I somehow managed to stumble upon the CEO of the biggest gym apparel company in the country and got a job with them lol. I can confirm that it works to go around and offer stuff. People might not really search for it, but if they get an opportunity and they consider the ROI a lot of companies are willing to pay. Money is everywhere we just have to pick it up. Keep up the good work lads, and good luck with taking pics to whoever is reading this. God Bless
This is a great idea for finding jobs. But a step up from this that I think would work even better would be to reach out to personal trainers. I’ve worked for a few personal trainers in my city in the past few months.
I've been doing volunteer work for a local business for about 3yrs now they provide there own equipment worth thousands and over the years I've enjoyed doing production/videography. I recently decided i really wanna pursue this and buy my own equipment and do photography work. Just wanted to say thanks for the raw way on how to get that started.
I did something similar to this, went to football clubs and asked coaches if they needed any team photos, match photos and player photos. if you have one team that is excited about the results, they will pass this on to other coaches and teams. just find your niche and do the best you can.
I personally was hoping it'd be more of some individual customers but thats my bad. I forgot you were doing this type of content for as long as I can remember haha. Yet in the end it does not change how you approach people. You still got to go to a place where your target audience is (your case a gym) and talk to people :) Keep on doing this!
I saw your video about car dealerships ages ago, and did something similar but i always led with who the best person to talk to as the floor people were always weirded out by the question. I sent out so many emails as almost no one these days does media in house for some reason 😢 i had nothing stick after i ran all around the surrounding suburbs
Even though it was for content it was legendary and rare for most people to get out there and sell themselves. It shows that hard work isn't easy , but I'm sure there's going to be a part2.
It'd be sick to see a music/concert version of this. I started shooting music at the start of the year and recently made some big connections after shooting my 3rd ever show. Hi Mike! I"ve started my photography business 2 years ago now and since then I couldn't really get a clear answer on how much I should charge for my services. unfortunately my camera doesn't have good video specs and Im not that great with video, so can never really find jobs as most places prefer video over photos. any advice?
You mentioned about doing the first shoot free. If a business puts this idea to you the photographer its a huge red flag. I learned the hard way when I first started a lot of businesses will take advantage of new togs and ask them to do the first shoot free with incentive of a call back and working with them in the future. The business will be really picky and get you to do a whole bunch of extra work and you as the tog wanna impress so you get a call back that never comes.
