- When Lake Erie is good, it is very good. Sails Up!
This is the first part of the day's journey. In the next video, Sakina responds to a call for assistance.
(Chose to upload in 1080p this time, for the additional clarity, instead of the usual 720p. What massive files, and wait times!!!)
For Cleaning sails, or keeping mold off the hull interior, I use 50/50 water/white vinegar for the gear, and 30/70 for interior mold and what not. Bleach may seem better, but does not kill mold, it merely "bleaches" it, then it comes back. Using the white vinegar and water, kills it out right. Should not return to areas you have done it. Hope this helps. May your sails always be full, and your ports long and inviting.
Thanks for the cleaning tip! Full sails and fair winds to you.
A great day sailing!
Hello and greetings from the land of your boats origin ;) I was wondering of one of the issues you mentioned in the video of pros and cons you made. The deep cockpit and if a big wave "fill it", could that happen and do you still think this is an issue cause it had me worried since i'm interested in this model. Thnx in advance 😀
Greetings, the deep cockpit concern came from my reading of a number of offshore sailing books in my collection, and was reinforced by several youtube videos regarding preparations for the OSTAR races. After some experience in a variety of conditions, I have never had an issue or concern so far, given the significant freeboard and the secure ride. I was also reassured by a number of videos of Maxi's sailing on the North sea is some very stirring conditions. I would still develop a plan to reduce the cockpit volume if I anticipated the possibility of drastic storm conditions. And Yes, I do still think you are interested in a very nice vessel.
Thanks, that makes me feel more confident in the safety about that. Always good to hear from someone that had first hand experience with the boat :) Thanks a lot and good luck with your future adventures! /Peter
I like to think sailing is zen... maybe zen poetry, but mainly just being
I wonder about balance in boats, does it matter where you store things
Isn't your wind reading 'apparent wind speed' since you are moving into the wind?
Yes, it is important to keep the boat balanced, relative to the stores (I've read to keep the ends light). I am a bit concerned with the apparently small volume of storage space of my Maxi 95 (compared to a number of other boats of similar size that seem to have a luxurious abundance), but, I really won't know until I start loading it up with months of the intended supplies. You are correct about the 'apparent wind speed' which made the 'true' relatively light, which became very obvious when I fell off the wind to return to port.
Tough lesson to learn. Many years ago I sailed down (Maumee) river thinking.. this is kind of fast in light wind.. only to realize taking up river in 5 mile an hour river was tough... and caused me to be reliant on a powerboat to pull me back
Storage... I was thinking your largest space is in the bow/aft it's why I wondered about balance
Yes, you are correct, the largest usable storage is bow/aft in the Maxi 95, but, I will keep the heavy stuff near the center and use the aft cabin as a cabin offshore (for the easier ride) instead of as a shed. Fortunately, I have 480 pounds of engine right in the center of the boat, so when winds are light, I let it push me back!!! 8^)
Sail on sailor!
Do you always sail alone?
To this point, >90% of the time, as my sailing time is mostly random and non-scheduled. As I type this note, I am sitting in the cabin, having come up after mowing the lawn for some update activity, and will overnight here, and go sailing in the morning, after a teleconference.
