Weird that the guy states that Collingwood & Carlton is one of the biggest rivalries, and then fails to give any background. For what it’s worth, that rivalry was sparked in the 1910 VFL Grand Final. You read that right.
That video missed a few more good rivalries: Essendon and Collingwood play against each other each year on ANZAC Day which attracts the biggest crowd outside the Grand final. And no matter their table position it's usually a good match. Geelong vs Hawthorn. A rivalry born in the epic 1989 Grand final, became a must watch event during the 2010s when the Kennett Curse saw Geelong win 11 times in a row despite many close matches. Sydney vs West Coast - a great rivalry during the 2000s with both teams in peak form fighting close matches including grand finals. It's not so big anymore though.
At 4:09 there is a photo of a group of freo players and one west coast player, the man with his arms up and is the tallest in the photo is my father who played in the afl for 11 years
OK Ryan. You are now officially a Hawk. Named after a suburb in Melbourne. Now you have a team to follow. You have the jumper, and here’s your theme tune (to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy): ua-cam.com/video/7AOnEa6XpuY/v-deo.htmlsi=0wFo8GDQ9y1-4VcD - you’ll hear it every time we win. Funnily enough the rivalry between teams doesn’t translate into ugliness between followers (generally). I have sat in the middle of the Collingwood stronghold with a 2-year-old shouting “carn the mighty Hawks” and lived to tell the tale 😊
Unfortunately he concentrated on the newer rivalries. Carlton v Collingwood rivalry is over 100 years old. Lots of black & white coverage in the past showed all players laying haymakers all over the place.
Having grown up in Adelaide , worked in Perth and now living in Sydney, I can barrack for the Crows, Eagles or Swans - one of my teams should win on the weekend.
The thing is WCEs V Freo, Gaff ( wce) is close family friend of Brayshaw( freo) and they play rounds of golf every fortnight together. They are very close friends still to this day. Brayshaw's brother actually joined WCEs for a few years aswell. Gaff and Andy's brother have both retired now, Andy( the broken jaw) healed well, has no problems and is co- captain of Freo now and one of the most saught after players now.
Ryan. The 'biffo' (punch up on the field) was something we expected to see most matches for the NRL - Rugby League especially the State of Origin matches.
Excellent team choice. I look forward to watching your AFL journey. Also, AFL is Footy if you live in Victoria, SA, WA or the NT, soccer is soccer but can be referred to as football, rugby league is rugba leeg or can be called footy if you live in NSW or QLD. Rugby union is rugby.
Probably the strangest Australian sporting hero is Cliff Young who won the 850km Sydney to Melbourne Ultra Marathon in 1983 at the age of 61. He was a potatoe farmer who had never run a marathon before. ...and he broke the world record by 2 days!!!! He's one to check out.
The AFL (Australian Football League) was called the VFL (Victorian Football League) up until 1990. At that time, it was a Victorian game. In the early 80s, the teams were; Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Footscray, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Richmond, South Melbourne and St. Kilda. NSW and Qld had Rugby League. Due to its popularity, other states jumped on board, and some teams moved interstate. Eg. South Melbourne, aka The Swans, moved to NSW and became the Sydney Swans.
The Port vs Crows rivalry goes far deeper than what is said in this video. The rivalry goes back to before either team entered the AFL. Port being the only club to come from a state league that was not the VFL applied for membership into the AFL around 1989/1900. This angered the SANFL board as well as the 9 other clubs in the league at the time as they did not want to lose a club to another competition. The SANFL took legal action to bar Port from being able to join the AFL at that time. This forced the creation of the Adelaide Crows, a composite team of all 10 SANFL sides. This obviously angered Port as they were pretty much in agreement with the AFL to join that league only to be held back. So Adelaide was first in the end but the AFL still wanted a second team from SA and the SANFL got teams in the SANFL to put in tenders to them and the best one would win the license to enter the AFL. The other SANFL clubs had small manila folders and wanted to combine with another SANFL club to create a new team where Port had a suitcase filled with documents to show they should be a standalone club in the AFL. Obviously we know who got the second license. There was still major tension between Port, the SANFL and Adelaide which is why that rivalry is as fierce as it is.
Ryan: “Why does Hawthorn have Tasmania? The Hawks-Tassie partnership dates back to 2001, with its current contract to play four games per season in Launceston worth close to $20 million. That deal expires next season, but Hawthorn believes Tasmania will want an AFL presence in the state before the Devils enter the competition in 2028.”
Nice to see you in a Hawthorn jumper (not jersey). Hawthorn is an exciting team, with some talented young players at the moment. You could consider following them. The Hawks women have also improved recently and are in the finals right now.
You have to realise that in the early day of VFL , most teams were represented by teams made up of local lads from different suburbs in the inner Melbourne area. ( apprt from Geelong. ) These suburbs were often next to each other. In these days the rivalry was almost tribal in its ferocity.
As a Eagles supporter it's a badge of shame especially Victorians make us wear for the Gaff incident. I think 8 weeks suspension was too harsh, they wouldn't have given Scott Pendlebury of Collingwood or Patrick Cripps of Carlton 8 weeks, knowing they'd miss the Grand Final potentially and that was the point weaken West Coast to affect their Premiership chances. 5 or 6 weeks tops, Barry Hall of Sydney only got 7 weeks for a king hit on Brent Staker of West Coast who if was the victim outside a pub could have been killed with his head hitting the ground.
Can't hate Ryan wearing the Hawks, because of Chris Fagan. The man, the legend, the coach to lift the Lions up as the 2024 champs 😂 But also if you're looking for more AFL content to review, the AFL playoffs ended fairly recently and there was one of the biggest comebacks ever in the history of AFL playoffs. This was week 2 and week 4 is basically the AFL Superbowl. Of course the winner went on to be Champions 🤣 ua-cam.com/video/K0SrGnyncRw/v-deo.htmlsi=cEzyopX0dkCBngQz
Bring back the Biff! 1980s AFL/VFL was basically a big brawl that some bugger's gone and thrown a football in the middle of it. It was as entertaining as the WWE is for some people.
Would love to see you play with a footy (afl football) Also, Port Adelaide has the best intro on their home matches - the only team that plays a pop song before their game INXS - tear us apart and all supporters hold their team scarves up - its a sight to see
Ryan, Ryan, Ryan!!!!!!!!!!!!! What the hell are you doing!!!!! I'm a Tasmanian but wearing a Tassie Hawks jersey is just not on. Mate, I'll get you a Pies membership.
Half of these rivalries are manufactured.Essendon/Hawthorn, Collingwood/Carlton, Collingwood/Melbourne, Adelaide/Port Adelaide, West Coast/Fremantle and Footscray/GWS are genuine. Many lesser rivalries also exist.
Glad to see you with my team's Hawks colors. They are the only team in the League to have won Championships in every decade since 1960.- a total of 13 so far.

You never see fights like these anymore because the AFL clamped down hard not only do players get fines and suspensions but the clubs get fines as well. They have also changed the rules making "hip & shoulder" bumps harder to do. Instead of letting these go and anger to build any illegal bumps are met with a stop in play and a 50 metre penalty given. This breaks up the play and stops incidents from building into fights.
As I am a Essendon bombers supporter my most hated team is Collingwood (which is great because they play against each other every ANZAC Day in front of 100k fans) I will let it slide that you are wearing a poo and wee jersey lol. The beauty with any fights in the AFL the umpire tries to keep the game going which forces the players to stop fighting faster. Also any brawls that happen the club's and the tribunal come down on the players involved with heavy fines and suspensions.
Yeah I have a soft spot for The Eagles because I coached my kids team Macleay Valley Eagles on the mid north coast of NSW and was their president for four years.

Mate, you never, EVER apologise for allegiance to a team. The Hawks happen to be one of the most successful teams of what we call the "Modern Era". They have won at least one premiership in each decade starting in the 1960's, a feat not matched by any other side!
Those "biffs" are why so many former players now have permanent brain damage, you idiot. Check out the current ABC drama "Plum" and maybe you'll change your mind.
I'm not a big AFL fan, I prefer rugby league (developed a liking for it when I went to university in Sydney) but yeah, Carlton all the way. Not that I had any say in the matter... There's a photo of me as a baby wrapped in a Carlton scarf 😂

Mate, you never, EVER apologise for allegiance to a team. The Hawks happen to be one of the most successful teams of what we call the "Modern Era". They have won at least one premiership in each decade starting in the 1960's, a feat not matched by any other side!
The Brown and Gold looks good on you Ryan
I remember schoolmates saying why their colors were brown & yellow...
@@geetee4459 Wees & poos, right?
So cool. You’re wearing the jersey I sent you. Nice.
Ummm ..AFL jumper is a Guernsey... NRL is a Jersey 👍
Didn’t know that. I grew up in Sydney and always called both ‘Jersey’
@@derekcraignolan that'd be why yep.
I played both Aussie rules & league so knew the different terms early on 👍 ✌️
@@derekcraignolan. Thanks, mate. Not.
Great jumper. Go the hawks 👍🏽
Well, at least you didn’t pick Collingwood Ryan 😂😂
The big men of AFL are pretty wild 😜
30 years ago games of Ruby League in Sydney would occasionally start with a brawl. We loved it. I say, "Bring back the biff!" Cheers from Sydney, AU.
Difference for 2018,the Eagles went on to win the greatest Grand FInal ever without Gaff and Fremantle still haven't won a Premiership. Just sayin
Let us cook...
No no no no. Ryan, Ryan, Ryan Wrong jersey. Go Brisbane lions.
Afl players wear a guernsey. Not a jersey...
Everyone looks better in brown and gold
You need to watch the best Rugby League State of Origin fights
