  • I start from Pine Creek and head to Wilsall, a small town where I camp for the night at Wilsall Fort. The next day is another marginal length to get to the famous city of White Sulphur Springs. The scenery is outstanding but logistics moving forwards keeps me from riding the miles I would prefer to ride to get to Helena. On this episode's last day I ride 80 miles to Chinaman Gulch which sits along the shores of the Missouri River. I enjoy one last night of camping on this magnificent river before arriving to Helena, MT. Subscribe to see what other kinds of crazy adventure I get myself into as I travel with my touring bicycle for 4,000 miles and thru 14 states before reaching the West Coast during these 11 weeks of summer.

    Loving the journey. I hate to see this come to an end. For the record, if you ever find yourself riding through Connecticut, you have a warm shower, beautiful property to camp on and a great breakfast spot a few miles down the road, my treat. Stay safe out there.

      Super cool, Mike. Thank you. I am planning on crossing the US again this summer starting in Acadia National Park, Maine. It's very likely I will be swinging by your place and take you up on your offer. Im super busy with my seasonal work at the moment so the last few episodes might take sometime to finish. Stay tuned. Next season of my YT channel I will be editing as I go so hopefully I will have weekly episodes since again. Stay tuned and thank you

Ive been going thru your old stuff ive allready seen, its all epic. Ur a beast man, those miles and headwinds and steep climbs are legit, I can only imagine the burn in ur legs lol!!! Every time i hear the word legit i think of you now!!!🤣 do you like coffee☕️? 🤫 Are you ever gunna share that square knot tube fix w/us? 🤔was that coffee ur drinkin? Lol.. I like that episode a bunch. What a great experience it was those days. The campground after a tough day was like an oasis. Yeah I like coffee a bunch but tend to lean on drinking tea instead. It's more mellow. I am trying to share some recipes at camp and will try do more of it. I've never had to do the square knot trick but it's definitely in the memory bank incase I see the need. As for my channel blowing up, well Im hoping but so far Im proud of the community it's created so far. Seems like a bunch of awesome people here sharing their stories and helping me with encouragement to keep going. I'll have a coffee today. Going to take the day off in a motel with wifi so I can respond to all the comments. Take care, man

    I was waiting for this! I know how much time these videos take. It's a full-time job. And they just keep getting better. Julianna and I are planning a trip from west coast to east coast in June. Is Montana the only place where you found it difficult to find places to camp/sleep? How's the water situation? Easy to come by or something you really need to load up on? Looking forward to the next video, whenever you get the time. Peace!

    • @FlyscoutRyder
      @FlyscoutRyder  3 роки тому +1

      You get it, Roland. Yes it takes a lot of time to create the episodes. Thank you for saying they are getting better as Im feeling the progression and enjoying the process of finding my voice in this. Im currently in the midst of my guiding season and find very little time to edit so it might be a while before the next episodes come out. After July I will be starting season 2 from Maine going across the most northern roads of the US and looking to create the episodes as I tour.
      Montana is an example of the difficulty in finding places to camp or stay. In the US that is always a challenge as there is so much private property. It's always something to keep logistical attention to but always manageable. Look ahead every day and find all the possible options depending on weather and how you feel. Look into Warm Showers website. I don't use it but I hear it's a great way to add options of places to end up camping at.
      Water is very important. I have all my bottle cages full and also carry a refillable bag in my pannier in case I see I might need extra water that day. I always refill during the day any chance I get. Excess weight is always on my mind so if I don't need the water bag filled then I will omit it.
      Thank you for watching my episodes. D.

    Hey Diego. Great to have you back, another awesome part of your trip. Loved the drone shots of Montana in particular, great work. Aren't the small towns just the best ? I regularly revisit random small towns, villages and hamlets that I've pedalled through in my mind , always makes me smile - and with Streetview, you can in an instant be back there. Nothing beats the real deal of discovering it for the first time though !
    Keep pedalling my friend.

    Hi, do you miss being on the road?? I found that after several months of Boston city living, and living well, I find myself out there in my head and thinking maybe I should do it again... strange attraction, maybe it’s the feeling of freedom that’s missed. The hills, dogs, close calls with cars, finding no place to sleep are forgotten. 63 now and it calls again... safe trip in life young man

    Always a pleasure watching your videos. You are a true treasure. After texting with you a while back I wanted to give you my opinion of a rear cassette change I made to tackle these steep climbs here along the Wabash river. I went from a 30-46 by 11-34 to an 11-42. I love it. So if your planning on doing another ride I can attest that this system really works. I have the Shimano GRX Gravel setup. I put a Wolf Tooth Derailleur Extender on to clear the 42 tooth cog. I have almost 300 miles on this setup now. It does flatten out those steep climbs quite a bit. Looking forward to your upcoming videos. Best wishes!

    • @FlyscoutRyder

      brings an interesting thought. bringing an alternate cassette along to swap depending on what's coming up. gonna look into it. thank you

    • @paddlingfan1
      @paddlingfan1 3 роки тому

      @@FlyscoutRyder Yes! I know several Gravel Riders I have been following on UA-cam that change cassettes for different rides. The swap I made I did not have to change the chain length at all. I did put a Quick Link on and started HOT WAXING the chain. It was a lot of work to clean the chain down to bare metal the first time but now it's nice the chain stays clean. I rewax it about every couple hundred miles so I don't think it would work for touring very well the way I do it. Maybe with a bottled liquid wax? That would keep the cassette and chain clean.

    • @Biking360
      @Biking360 3 роки тому

      That interesting to me. I currently have a 20-32-40 with an 11-36. I've got an 11-41 that's been sitting on the desk for a month. Do you think it will make a big difference and how is the spread in the middle gears? Stay safe JP

    • @paddlingfan1
      @paddlingfan1 3 роки тому

      @@Biking360 There is a difference in the spread in the middle gears. Yes they are farther apart which does change you cadence possibilities This was annoying at first but now I don't notice it much at all. I figure by the mid summer I won't notice at all. It's all about what you get used to I think. What is more important to me is getting up those steep grades without filling your legs up with lactic acid. Plus I have to hike-a-bike less often on the really bad stuff. I'm looking forward to trying this setup on some single-track in the coming weeks. I think it will work great.

  • @dog-so1vj

    That's one heck of a piece of debris that punctured your tire. You do well taking it in stride. You are well prepared. I know how it feels when you haven't had a flat in a while. It's just frustrating when you have to break your cadence and stride. FYI, I have Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires on my bike too. So far I love them. They aren't cheap though. I know I'm way behind, but I'm going to binge watch all of your videos. Eventually I will get caught up...🚴‍♂️
