    I caught it up in Qualicum Beach and then in Nanaimo. I missed the turquoise waters in Qualicum, but the wildlife were still there in the thousands. Thousands of surf scoters, which is more than I'd ever seen! In Nanaimo, I arrived the evening that the herring were starting to spawn at Neck Point and got some beautiful sunset shots of all the colours. Pretty great!

      @MattShannonPhoto  6 місяців тому

      So great to hear! I saw photographs of the action happening at Qualicum Beach. We were close to leaving Hornby to check it out. Happy to hear that there was a lot of wildlife during your time there. Next time I'm getting a long extension pole for my go pro so I can get better herring shots in the water :)

    I’ve been hunting the river otter in OH for the past 3 years, with no luck. There is a National Park about an hour from my house that has 2. That’s a bucket list animal for me. Personally I like the color shot. It’s great to hear that there are conservation efforts happening to protect this herring species. I take pictures of wildlife because I’m personally awed by Nature. Sometimes I wonder what our grandchildren will miss seeing if we don’t protect it. Love that your wife narrated part of this one! I love the vibe of your channel!

    This was incredible! So much wildlife in one location! The close-ups were incredible and sharp. As always, I favored the B&W image of the otter for its contrast and texture. The color image is exceptional as well. I truly enjoyed the whole video.

      It was a great trip. I heard there was a large gathering of multiple pods (a small super pod) of orcas after we left so you never know what you are going to get! Glad you really enjoyed this video. It took a long time to put together so I hope these videos pay off 😊. I really enjoy the field videos especially if I can include some tutorial work or a quick gear review in the field. The B&W image was a lot of fun to work on. You are 100% right when it comes to contrast and texture. Otters are so cool. Thank you for your feedback, always appreciated!

      B&W is obvious isn't it 😄. The texture and lighting just works but you never who what your audience thinks which is why its fun to ask and hear the feedback. Thank you Renaat! It was a pleasure meeting you and your wife on Hornby! You never know what to expect during the herring spawn or if the spawn will take off while your there. More to share next week! Cheers

    Hi Matt, great little video about an awesome natural event. We went the boat route and went around Hornsby and Denman. We unfortunately missed out on the sixty plus Orca that were around the day before. We saw remnants of a spawn the day before, plenty of sea lions and some eagles. The day was hot and sunny and lovely on the water. Thanks for all the info on the run. Oh B/W on the otter shot for sure.

    I have to say I like the color version of the first portrait of the River Otter better than the b/w version. There’s something about that background that I really like. However, I like the b/w versions of the other otter photos better than the color. But I agree that there is something special about any image of a River Otter!

    Otters...in fact, all mustelids, are the best family of mammals. Some great images there and on this occasion I think the B/W works as well as the colour images of the otter. The stage of the otters fur that transitions between fully wet when it emerges from the water and before it dries gives the best look for photos. This 'spiky' look helps create a more contrasty effect on the animal which is the reason that B/W works well., particularly in the right light.
    Just my personal thoughts
    Best wishes to you and your family from Wales.

    Really enjoyed the video. For context on the commercial fishery, it would have been nice/educational to compare the impact of the current wasteful commercial fishery with the indigenous ‘roe on kelp’ herring fishery. So much to learn from native peoples. Too bad we choose not to.
